I have a Neo Front Loader and was wondering if the Backup Memory is battery powered, and if so, is it relatively easy to replace it? What battery model/number should i look for?
Thanks

i dont remeber off the top of my head, its been a while since i have used a neo cd system, but i think it does...

is there a slot in the back that you can change the sytem batt, i assume it would be marked, i know the Saturn had one, that is why i am thinking the neo Cd does as well, but dont quote me on this.

It doesn't seem to have the slot, but i just noticed that the box for it shows a kind of blueprint picture of the inside of the machine on the front of the box, and it looks to have a Battery from the pic. Looks like best way to find out is to open it up.

Ive had it since launch also, the battery has never failed............you certainly cant change it without opening the console.....if at all.

OK hang on, IF the battery dies, do I lose all my saves then ?
I think its like the Capcom Suicide scenario on the CPS-2 boards. It may have a temporary cache that saves it for a while (Matter of hours!) so you can change the battery but dont hold me to that.

ok well I haven't played my neo CD for a few years, so its been off. What would you say the best thig to do is and if I have 2 change my battery, then how as I never done it.

This is gonna sound stupid but I thought that in a sense it was a very small HD where it would just keep all the game saves.

I mean I thought I could not play the neo CD and after 0 years switch it on and ALL 85 saves will still be there

Best thing is to try it. The battery is internal so it would mean opening it up and replacing it. I think the memory is only like 4k or somethin (may be wrong). I thought my Front Loader battery was empty thats why i started this thread, but luckily, i pulled it out of storage and its fine so fingers crossed for yours.

Wrong about the Saturn. The battery powers both the clock and the memory. However, the Saturn is "smart" about divvying out the power from the battery. It will power the clock until there's less than about 5% power left in the battery, at which point it will cancel feeding the internal clock and will strictly use the remaining power to keep the memory alive for as long as possible. Once the battery completely dies, the memory in the system will be wiped. Also, removing the battery will wipe the memory. You can swap batteries with the system turned on.. however, this is highly discouraged. The best thing is to occasionally back up important files to a memory card (which are large enough to store well over 100 different game saves). Also, I've found that keeping the system plugged in, even if it's not on will help prolong battery life (I seem to be getting 4+ years out of my batteries this way).

And doesn't the Neo-CD use internal Flash-RAM for saving that's occassionally fed by the battery just to make sure that nothing gets corrupted (much like the Neo-Geo AES/MVS Memory Card)? Because the save files seem invulnerable to time... regardless of how much time is spent not playing the unit. I'm guessing that when you play, the battery is actually able to recharge some.
