Hey guys, this website was recently brought to my attention: http://www.playmessiah.com/

They make high-quality, third-party controllers for discontinued consoles, and with the same wireless technology the WaveBird uses. The D-pad on them looks to be similar to a NeoGeo Pocket Color's Click-Stick, and we all know how good that is!

We all know that the Neo hasn't had new controllers made in God-knows-how-long, and that, though it's possible to mod existing controllers to work on the Neo, it'd be nice to be able to buy a product designed just for the NeoGeo that's brand new in packaging.

I sent this company an email through their Contact Us page and told them that we here at N-G would probably be interested in controllers for the NeoGeo. Think about it, a joystick with the same ruggedness and quality and precision of an Old-Style stick, bought brand new, and with wireless connectivity... I know I'd ditch my two old-style sticks for such a controller. Or, how about a joypad designed for the NeoGeo that won't wear out like a CD pad?

Anyway... what do you guys think? I noticed that they're located in California, so maybe some of you Cali guys can meet up with this company and pitch ideas.

I say, if some of us would pay more than $1000 for Metal Slug, we'd be more than willing to pay for new wireless Neo controllers.

Last year we had a discussion with those guys. They came to OKGE and had snes/nes wireless controllers. I was quite impressed with the controllers. I didn't care for the lunchboxes they came in or the stupid trucker hats they were wearing but the controllers were very solid.

They seemed a bit hesitant to say anything on the neo controllers. I can understand why, there being quite a lot of manufacturing costs to consider and a very small market for them.

Those controllers are very solid, I enjoyed them quite a bit.

Yeah, if the price were reasonable and the stick were of good enough quality, I'd be really interested in something like that.

I've got a Hori wireless pad for my PS2, and I love it.

A joystick... especially a Neo stick, with a wireless connection would be fantastic.

I just sent them this link, so when they read the email, hopefully they'd keep an eye on it.

You know, I think this would complete my vision of my ideal Neo setup: consolized MVS, small RGB monitor, nice headphones, and very new, wireless, high-quality NeoGeo joysticks.

Anyway, I think the best plan of action is this: they stage a gathering with the Cali folk, who bring their Neo systems, games, controllers, and of course their experience and opinions. They'd game on while having sort of a focus group discussion, and figure out what a controller for such a system should have.

If these could match the quality of an oldstyle stick, I'd to whatever it takes to buy a pair.

What he said. I played on both the NES and SNES wireless they had at OVGE and being across from them all day, got some decent talk time. Those wireless controllers are the best I've ever seen. They let me play 1942 from me and Magna's booth some 25 or 30 feet away, and said they'd go much further than that. Very, very solid controllers. But again they have to make a certain amount in a run, and I doubt enough of us could pitch in to make it profitable for them.

:spock: Why are they wasting so much money on lunchboxes, and Dog tags, metal isn’t cheap nowadays.

I would absolutely be interested in a new Neo controller. Great idea Adam, I would love to see this thing come to fruition.

Maybe, but then again, maybe not.

Back when the "Neo Geo Stick 2" was announced for the PS2 I started a poll to see if there was any interest in having the original Neo controller reproduced.

Out of all the members on this board, only 73 responded for a total of 130 controllers.

Honestly, I thought the numbers would have been a lot higher knowing the condition of many controllers that have been around for 14+ years.

If you get numbers even close to that I doubt a company would consider any type of run (unless you don't mind paying big $$$ for each controller).

Sounds cool. I don't see why people like wireless controllers all that much, but I do see there appeal. I'm happy they will be more or less standard soon. I do think Neo ones would :buttrock:

I think you just answered the question really. Those 14 year old sticks have seen some major abuse through the years and yet their still fully functional (the vast majority of them anyway)...sure the logo may have faded, and there's the cracks in the ball, but considering they're over 14 years old the buttons and stick are still as responsive as ever. I'd love to see a PS2 or Xbox pad last that long.

I think people are happy with their original sticks, although the wireless option definitely has it's appeal.

I dunno. If the stick felt right I might buy one. Last year at OKCGE I really didn't like the dpad/joystick on the pads, they just didn't fell right on an nes or snes.

Got a reply y'all:
We totally appreciate your support and interest in our company and will pay close attention to this forum as it grows. You can send specific design/conceptual ideas to bstrahle@playmessiah.com. Thanks again, and we'll be sure to leave the trucker hats at home next time year at OKGE.

imo its hard to make a good joystick these days and the quality will never be as good as the neo geo stick but if it is close i would buy because the neo stickks cord is kinda short any way....

I was talking to Mushiki a few months back about this very idea. I really would like it, and it would definately reduced the clutter on the floor in my game room. Mushiki said something about it being impractical or "no need."

But I think it's an ace idea.

If they build it like a Wavebird in terms of durabilty and quality it would be great. Like dbarrett0928 said the stick cables are freaking short. Nothing beats being able to lounge comfortably on my couch without worrying about pulling the system off the shelf.

If they use Sawna parts I will for sure buy one or maybe two.

Depending on price, I would be in for a couple. One segment you guys seem to have overlooked is the supergun owners (seems many are Neo wired.)

Count me in sounds like a good idea.

I don't know if I can agree with you on that. As responsive as ever? Really? Maybe your sticks are, but I doubt the "vast majority" work as well as they did brand new.

And along with the faded logos and cracked balls you left out "scratched to hell" with missing screws, foam pads, etc. Maybe that's what I should have pointed out: that many of them look like hell after 14 years.

I just figured people might want a nice, brand new Neo controller to replace their old ones. If anything, to prevent further wear and tear on their original ones (from a collectors standpoint).

Now, if you could reproduce the original Neo controller and make it wireless you might have something there!

I'd buy that for a dollar!

I was thinking that too.

And everyone is missing the obvious. Get Shawn to put in some coin to fund the production run.

Old School Gamer is likely about to become the first Canadian distributor for Playmessiah, and as most of you know, I am also a huge Neo Geo fan.

If this can be brought to fruition, I will push hard on my end, and support it as a reseller if it ever comes to fruition.

To satisfy Neo gamers, it would have to be a solid stick, and quality parts cost money. That said, many Neo gamers are used to spending real money, as long as they get solid gear. Therefore that may not be as troublesome an issue as it may seem at first blush.

Cool stuff!

Would anyone care for a slightly different solution, like a transmitter dongle for an existing controller, and a reciever plugged into the Neo? Just an idea that popped into my head.

Obvious is spending someone else's money? On second thought, it is.

I love wireless controllers, really I do after experiencing it with the WonderMega, but people will also pay $1400~1800 for Metal Slug because SNK made it. And 3rd party copies? aka "special" versions not made by SNK? Oh about $150.

Yeah, That'd be a great solution actually.

Like others have said though, the parts would have to be top-notch. at least on a par with the original sticks.
