I remember when this system first came out, I thought it was a great idea and I wanted one. Never bought one and never known anyone who has. Are they as good as they sound, or crappy?

I really like it, Megadrive has a ton of good games and they look great in the Nomad. The screen is backlit and clear as light.
The only problem is that the nomad is quite big, and takes out batteries (6 AA batteries that go in a backpack) like a champ, I doubt they last more than 3 hours. There is also a rechargeable battery pack.
The nomad can also be hooked to a TV and therefore used like a regular megadrive, but you have to use it as a controller and you can't switch off the screen. It also has a controller port for a second player.

I'd say that, for the price of it and the availability and cheapness of games, ut is well worth the effort.

Definately a really great system, but I wouldnt call it a true portable. The screen is a good size, the backlite is perfect, the control is point-on. The battery life kills it, and good luck finding a rechargable anymore that still works. If you dont have a Genesis to hook up to your tv, pick up a nomad for $50 and use the wall plug to play it on your couch.

Nomad is a must-own if you still enjoy your genesis games.

Only problems I have with mine: I require to wedge a few slices of paper between the back of the cart and the nomad casing to avoid the cart from rattling and crashing on me.

Plus it gets only 15 MPG on batteries.

Some games don't work for it. Forgotten Worlds is one I can name off the top of my head.

Worth every penny though.

I'd be damned if the Nomad went full out for an hour with those 6 AA batteries. :envy:

Two player hookup, and linked to a tv is quite fun actually.

And like Electroman said, quite a few games won't work with it (something with the 6-button idea?). I know for sure Golden Axe II doesn't work. :crying:

But overall it's a nice little handheld if you pick up the killer Genny titles and you must get the AC adapter. ;)

Avg batt time for me on a game is about 3-4 Hrs with alkalines.

About 2 player hookup with TV link... I like to brag how my friend and I played and beat Gunstar Heroes on this setup: I played and viewed my Nomad while my friend viewed his side of the screen on a Turbo Express w/TV tuner, using the 2P port and AV ports of the nomad. A totally nerdamoment but it was fun.

6 Button games work fine on it. Comix Zone is actually a great title to play on the Nomad; one of Sega's finest domestic-produced games IMO. About GAII not working... I'll have to try that. Maybe we can put a confirmed -not work- list for the nomad right here? Forgotten Worlds, Golden Axe II... any others folks?

I also have the same prob with mine...this is like group therapy, I'm glad I wasn't the only one. My budyy has one and can shake it like a polaroid and it never crashes though.

Great system though....especially if you are next to an outlet and don't need batteries.

Populous doesnt work (it also doesnt work on the CD-X, and perhaps the 3rd model genesis/MD as well.)

I love the nomad. You can use the gamegear branded external rechargeable battery, and it seems to work quite well. dont remember any battery life times though.

All games I have tried work perfectly, except for King of Monsters. The cart loads normally, going to title screen and into demos, but no buttons do anything. Other Neo ports work, like Sam Sho and FF, but not this one

I had one when they first came out. It is definately one of
the better ideas to come out of the 16 bit era in my opinion.
It's a genesis on the go and made fairly well so if you are a
genny fan then it is a must have.

It's pretty crappy,imo.

First off,the battery life sucks (2-3 hours for 6AA's),and it weighs a TON. Secondly, like the others have mentioned earlier, there are quite a few games that are incompatible with the Nomad, with a few being my favorites. Lastly, the screen gets pretty damn blurry, especially with games like Sonic and/or sports titles (due to its craptastic refresh rate).

I seem to remember that I got my MD copy of Forgotten Worlds to run on my Nomad. It can take a couple of tries to pick up though.

You have to make sure that you're holding down the Mode button as you switch the system on. This instructs the console to read the pad as a 4 button (A, B, C and Start) instead of an 8 button (A, B, C, X, Y, Z, Mode and Start). Same thing goes for playing said games on a Genesis/MD if you're using a six-button pad.

I know there are one or two games that won't work at all with the 6-button though. Forgotten Worlds DOES work if you use the Mode Switch on the 6 Button pad. I'll test it on my Nomad this evening to double-check though.

Overall, the Nomad was a great concept... but the irregular shape coupled with the battery-nuking essentially results in the Genesis equivalent of a PSOne with an LCD screen.

Decap Attack does not work on the Nomad. If anyone cares.
