As I've posted in Unrelated, I was in Tokyo last week and these are pictures from last Monday when I visited SuperPotato (www.superpotato.com) in Akihabara.

I didn't see it at first. I was walking down a back alley, just looking for game specialists when I heard it: that beautiful music. I didn't know the tune, but I knew where it came from: an 8-bit Nintendo. You know the music. I looked at the store on street level but I didn't carry anything. Then I looked up: there it was. Super Potato. I'd never head of it before, but I'll never forget it.

(I took this afterwards)

All the store deals in is "dead" video game systems: Famicom-N64. Everything. It and Traders are video game heaven for gamers. They're tiny stores absolutely packed to the gills with stuff, floor-to-ceiling in tiny aisles.

Here was their hardware section for the Neo:

(they had two front-loaders CDs, on in box)

At first I perused their Neo Geo stuff on the shelf -but it was like a 7-11: good games, but nothing above a SamSho2 or AOF2. Then, as I was checking out, I saw the glass case. Holy crap. All it had was Neo stuff. You know the store knew its stuff when it put the "good stuff" under wraps.

Here's the goods... Keep in mind the Yen is right now trading at just above 100 yen = $1. So all you have to do is move the decimal place two to the left and you'll get US Dollars. Oh, and check out their prized belle in the top right.

That's right. Quiz Chibi Delux (JPN NGH) for $1680.

NTM for "only" $1280.

There's no way I'm dumping that much money on a game, but I know some of you will get a kick out of that (current Monday of last week). I mostly finished my Neo collection years ago.

I also picked up a special edition NGPC that was tied into Tactics Ogre, but one of the MN guys already scooped it up from me at-cost for $50.

Needless to say, if you're in JPN you must visit SuperPotato and Traders in Akihabara (I hear Super Potato also has a store in Osaka).

Oh yeah, both Traders and Super Potato has those bootleg homecarts of Ganryu.

Also, SS0 (SS5 US) was selling at $175, but SS5-Special was selling for $525... both at Traders.

So the NTM went up in price? I was there in the super potatoe in November and saw it for roughly $945. It was so tempting to just buy it. But overall it was a great store. I picked up copies of fatal fury 2 and special and art of fighting 1 and 2 for like $15 total.

Great pics,thanks Bobak.
Interesting woul be to know if some cart were sunfaded on the spine(esp Chibi) since sometimes shops in japan charge about the same amount of money even if the game is sunfaded.

Only Eurowanker collectors who never play their games care about sunfading.
You wouldn't know the actual joy of gaming if it leapt up and bit you in the ass.

(Meanwhile, back in the thread...)

Those are some awesome pics, Bobak. I hope to go there myself someday, and build up my collection on the spot. I'd love to rebuild my Super Fami arsenal again, in fact I think I'd go apeshit and spend everything I had, leaving just enough for cab fare back to the airport.

Did you do any karaoke while you were there? It seems like that would be an absolute must.

How much were they selling Neo systems for?

Hehe, I was in Akihabara 2 years ago, can't remember if I went into the Potato store or not, but I got a nice little map from a Japanese dude who lived in Tokyo (at Gamefaqs forums even) which listed all the gameshops in Akihabara (about 15 to 20 I think), I used it A LOT.

I bought my NeoGeo at Trader 2 if I remember correct. Also bought a Saturn and Dreamcast with 20 games each and like 40 SFC games hehe. I was broke after that though...

Akihabara = gamer's heaven.

You won't believe the shit they have there until you see it, 4 real.

Shouldn't you be updating the price guide with those DOCUMENTED RETAIL PRICES for those games?

Hmmm...

I dunno. I play every game in my meager collection, but when I buy something that carries a hefty price tag I do expect it to be in near mint/good condition.

Thanks for the sharing Bobak.

I'm sure that the "I wish I'd live in japan" member count here must be increased again.

Shouldn't you be making an effort to read PROPERLY what is written on the guide?
Prices reflect a western market perspective.

Thanks for the flashback to my New Year's Japan trip, Bobak. Matsuda-san and I dropped in on the Akihabara Super Potato very briefly during the first few days of my trip -- not long enough to snap any pics or do any shopping, and unfortunately I never had the chance to get back over there. I did manage to make a few purchases at the Oosaka Super Potatoe while beelzebubble was showing me around the Den Den Town area there.

Normally, I don't start counting the days til my next New Year's Japan trip until September or so, but your thread's got me champing at the bit to go back. Cheers.

Don't forget cost of living in Japan is extremely high...........
I doubt you will have any money left over to buy those video games........ :crying:

Oh and yeah Bobak the store in Osaka is very good too, I've been there once.
It's like the same but a bit bigger then the Akiba one and more rare stuff for better prices actually.

Is it true that the real deals are not in Akiba, but in the suburbs´stores?

No there aren't so much really good shops in Tokyo next to Akihabara.
There is Mandarake in Shibuya that has some cool retro and a shop in Shinjuku will cool stuff but for the BEST DEALS EVER you should go to Osaka.
This is because prices in Akihabara for really rare stuff are getting higher every year, because they know some foreigner will pick em up sooner or later, this is not the case in Den Den Town Osaka.
