Cleaning the lens may simply fix the problem.
On older versions its a pain in the ass as you have to dismantle the player, the later version is much easier as the disc is top loading so opening the lid reveals the optical pick up assembly making it easy to clean.
If you have the older version it may be worth trying a cd/dvd lens cleaning disc first.

Aligning the lens had different results for me some games that use to work no longer does and vice versa. I suggest you have Sony do the job.

Just get the new one, I don't think there was ever much use for the hd? Not into turn based rpgs, so no loss for me. I have a friend who did the laser re-adjustment, but now he finds that he has to do the fix every other week, pain in the ass to dismantle your PS2 all the time :S. He gave up and bought the new one, no worries now. Still, yours could be a very easy fix, alot of tutorials online if you look. Good luck on your fix :smirk: .
