MAJOR DS PRODUCTION PROBLEMS!

Ok guys, I preordered my DS like the rest of you. Well, I had 6 of my friends over at my house for a DS launch party and everyone noticed that my DS was different from theirs...

As some of you may know, Nintendo couldn't meet the requirement of over 2 Million DS preorders so they opened a new manufacturing house in China to meet consumer demand. All of my friend's DS' were in the 1 million serial number range, where my serial number was in the 7 millions.
Their are a few quality problems with my DS that they did not have. I will list them all off, and will make it clear to you if you got a real good DS, or the cheaper-to-manufacture, lower quality DS systems. Please don't delete this thread guys, you if anybody should understand that this is a very big problem that Nintendo should resolve for their loyal preordering customers.

Original manufacture DS identification:
All the embossed words in the plastic on the back of your DS is very prominent due to the original mold that the plastic was injected into. Your serial number font will not be as bold as the cheaper revision. Your serial number sticker is very clear to read under direct light. The L & R triggers do not make a spring like sound when you release them. The silver paint job on the top of the unit is done with better quality paint, the paint feels less rough when you rub the back of your finger against it for direct comparison versus the cheaper revision. If you have an original, the D-Pad is much more stiff while the later version is slightly loose to the touch. On your original your DS will come with a stylus that has the Nintendo oval logo followed by an injection #, where as the cheaper version has no injection #. The actual black plastic on the back of the unit is a bit darker than the second version. The original version's clock at the menu screen has a slightly different sound for the second hand's ticking and the volume is a bit louder. The original version has slightly concaved start/select buttons as well. And last, the screen appears to "slightly" display Black and gray colors darker than the latter.

I must say that it is a huge shame that Nintendo has already ruined over half their products by the launch date. Since they could not meet the proper manufacturing demands on 2 million DS units, you presumibly do not have a quality unit unless it is under that number. Please check your new DS units and make sure you let Nintendo know that WE KNOW. If you have the second revision, I'm very sorry to be the one who had to inform you that your new handheld console is much worse than 2,000,000 units produced that other people own. Shame on you Nintendo, NO ONE WANTS TO OWN AN INFERIOR PRODUCT WHEN THEY PAID FULL PRICE FOR IT.

Good revision (non-bold serial):
Has a space between the serial number and the last digit that is in a box.
NU12345678 [9]

Bad revision (Bold serial):
Has space between "NU" and the serial number.
NU 12345678[9]

Understand that the 2nd revision isn't horrible (I've been playing on mine all night), but it is definitely manufactured at a cheaper cost than revision 1 and it bothers me that Nintendo can't have consistancy with their products.

As of now, all units are made in China.

Ok, it has been brought to my attention that *all* Nintendo DS' will display the oval Nintendo logo if a game is inserted, and will not if one isn't present. Please identify your unit by everything else mentioned above.

Also, the original version's clock at the menu screen has a slightly different sound for the second hand's ticking and the volume is a bit louder. The original version has slightly concaved start/select buttons as well.

Was that the DS you got some days earlier than launch day? I guess that's the price you had to pay for having it sooner...

Just kidding, this really sucks. I guess that's one of the reasons I usually never buy a new system on launch day. I hope Nintendo solves this.

Ca't you just try to have it exchanged for the better revision at your supplier?

Mine appears to be a first run system going by the guidlines you mentioned above. My stylus has the Oval Nintendo logo on it, embossing looks good, serial number begins with 1, etc... Why are these all made in China? What happened to everything Nintendo branded being made in Japan, except maybe the Ique which is a China only product?

Mine also is a first run system, but the damn thing has dead pixels. I have counted 6 now. Hopefully the store I got it from will have some left over from the pre-orders so I dont have to wait till they get more in before I return it.

I'm sorry to hear about your 6 dead-pixels. That is quite a bit. I really am pissed about these two revisions though, I find that it is very confusing to have two different versions released on the same day. My biggest problem is the low quality D-Pad on the 2nd revision.

I have the good one but my serial number starts with a 4. I have the logo on my stylus and the "CHINA 85".I have no dead pixels. My L&R buttons makes the clicky noise and my serial number is bold and sharp. Shame on Nintendo...

I MADE A HUGE IDENTIFICATION MISTAKE:

Serial number does not matter, just the font that the number is printed in. The cheaper revision can be identified by having a serial number having as bold of a font as in the image below. Also, the 2nd revision units will have a tiny indent in the lid where the red circle in place in the second image.

Thought this might helped

I've seen a few DS systems, and all those in the 4 million range is written in bold, and the those in 1 million range is sharp and 'nonbold'.

Ok I checked my serial number and compared it to the picture.
Mine goes NU4XXXXXX [5]. The NU is not spaced but the boxed number is.

does it not have the angles on the top?

They are there, you just can't tell because of the top view in a bright scan-bed.

As I have mentioned in a couple other topics, I purchased three DS systems for Christmas. I have not opened them but I can see the number through the hole in the back.

One of my three systems has the bold font. That system was purchased from GameStop. The other two systems do not have the bold font and were purchased from EB and Pamida.

I think I got 2 non-skunky ones. One from Frye's and the other from Software etc.
Both serials start with a "1". Picto-chat is kinda cool btw.

ResOGlass, is it possible to ask you to scan in the 'non-bold' serial number as well? It's a little hard to tell how bold the serial number needs to be. I think a side-by-side comparison would be great, it would help immensely.

I would gladly have scanned it in already, but I only own the inferior DS. I will ask one of my friends to bring their superior version over so I can get a scan.

Cluster of pixels stuck red here. They're holding one for me to exchange tomorrow.

My impressions so far:

Awesome looking LCD screen(s)
Terrible D-Pad
Could care less about the touch pad
Sounds great except GBA games which are a little staticy
Top heavy

Well I guess I wasnt the only one. What store did you get it from and what is your serial? Mine current one is 102668498, my old dead pixel one had a close numer too.

I need to call a different store and see if they will swap this one out too since I dont want to bother the guys who swapped my first one out again.

Nintendo has commented on the dead pixel issue. It was posted on gamespot last night. But now I cant seem to find the link. They said that these kind of problems happen to most lcd tech. And that if you happen to get one they would be happy to repair or replace it for you.
