question on sticks for a supergun

Ive been playing around with the idea of building my own supergun for quite some time. I do not have a great knowledge of how to do it, but with some help and patience i think i can. I was just wondering if I could use my Dreamcast Agetec Arcade sticks in it? The Agetec sticks are my all time favorite and I would like to be able to use them. Would this be a problem if i was to switch between 4 and 6 button games? Is it possible at all? There is no credit button so i guess i would have to build that in to the supergun itself, right? Help please :)

If you need any help, just let me know. I've built a few superguns and have tools and whatnot.

I put a credit button on my 'gun and it works fine. I also wired the credit button to the select button on a neo stick.

As long as you just solder leads onto the button themselves and avoid the PCB inside an agetec stick you should be fine. You can get a db-15 pin connector and drill it into the side of the stick, any other connector would be ok as well as long as it's got say, at least 15 pins.

So i guess there is no possible way to leave the stick alone and wire all the stuff inside of the 'gun? Id rather leave the sticks alone if possible, but i guess i could just buy a few more if i have to.

You have to internally mod the stick by adding an extra cable to it. However, the stick will still work with your DC after you do the mod, as long as you don't mess with anything else and leave the original cord.

Although it's meant to be used primarily for Capcom fighting games it works on AES too, with the following button configuration:

Of course, you can make it work with any lay-out you want, I personally have 2 of these sticks and have them with 2 different lay-outs:

B C D
A - Sel

- Sel D
A B C

where Sel is the select button.

That way you lose the Capcom layout though. My layout
is the only way to go if you want to make the stick compatible with both KOF and SF, which is what Gatsu25 wants to do.

Oh well, I couldn't care less for the Capcom lay-out myself. Still my second one could be basically the same, just possibly flipping kicks and punches. It also depends on how you wire the kick harness. I personally prefer to have the HK button just to the right of the HP button.

...and getting rid of select... anyway, if we take into account personal preferencies, then there's little point discussing as any layout could be questioned, even the Neo one. For instance one might prefer something like this:

The major shortcoming with this (and also the very first layout you posted above) is the fact that B is exactly above A, which may be OK for fighting games, where you use the thumb for A but is very uncomfortable for games like Metal slug where you need forefinger on A and middlefinger on B, so you can tap A repeatedly for rapid firing (which can't be done effectively with the thumb) and simultaneously jump with B.

All in all, sticking to original layouts has its advantages...

I like the first and the a right over b, and c right above d setup as well. Too many choices :loco:

I didn't need to get rid of select, I just have that button wired to both the 5th button spot of the JAMMA harness and the kick harness, just like the D/Z you mentioned.

Yes, I agree having the B button above A can be a bit of a problem, that's why I used 2 different lay-outs in my 2 sticks, so I can choose whatever suites better my needs for the game I'm going to play. Still, that's basically the same problem I have with C & Z being one above the other in fighting games, as those two are basically the only ones I use (yes, I know I suck at fighting games).

And let's not forget about the classic NGCD lay-out:

C D
A B

which works quite well with some Neo Geo games, as long as you don't have to press B+C. Still, it would be hard to make that lay-out compatible with a 6 button one.
