I'm starting to play as Shen. I would like to learn how to use his attacks/super moves and how to counter the opponent's attacks (anti-air moves, combos ... etc.)

all tips or strats are welcome. I'm still a n00b in 2003.

and I want to know how to pull his guard break move (in which he hits the opponent's hand and punch). so far, I do it that way:

[hcb ... f .... fd] + C

but I'm not sure if this is how it's done.

thanks in advance :)

There's two basic things to remember when using shen
-- He relies on complete offense to win. His defensive options are not that great so a complete rushdown is your best strategy.
-- He eats meter like no other. A large part of his game revolves around landing his SC combos and his qcfX2 super.

Basic combos

jC/jD, sC, qcb+A qcf+A

sC, f+B, qcf+A SC qcfX2+P

cB, cA, qcfX2+K

Abuse far sB, it's a great poke. Similar to Goro's sB

His best anti airs are cC is decent. If you have good timing qcfX2+K can pull everything out of the air.

His command grab is hcb, f+C
It can be used to reflect fireballs. It's a great tool because if you are playing Shen all out offense your oppenent will be blocking a lot. Mix up your rushdow with the grab to break their guard.

firebomber, you are the man. that's exactly what I wanted to know.

yeah, I found that his far B does a lot of damage. and his combos get the opponent dizzy very quickly.

one thing I didn't like about him is his close and crouching Cs. they has a short range. not only that, but you also have to be very close to pull his combos. otherwise, some attacks may not connect.

one more question; how can I use his forward D?

I'm going to the arcade today and see what I can do with him.

A few more things.

For his qcb+A qcf+A chain you have a lot of time to cancel the qcf+A. This gives you some nice options.
-If the first part is blocked you can pause and fake like you are ending the chain, but then pull out the second part and get a counter hit. This works more often than you would think since you can vary the timing of the second hit, it becomes confusing.
-If the opponent gets wise to the pause mix up you can stop after the first part then rush in and command grab to combo.

Shen does have very short range on almost all his moves. This forces you to abuse the far sB which is his only decent poke or stay completely in their face the whole time.

qcfX2 +P super comes out extremely fast. If you are playing someone who doesn't know shen, play shen as your first character and imediately super at the start of the match. This catches a lot of people off guard and you usually get a counter off it.
Which reminds me, his qcfX2 +P super is a counter wire, so if you land the counter it's possible to link 2 supers.

The f+D doesn't have much use really. I read somewhere that it has homing capabilities. That is if you do f+D and go toward the opponent and they go over you he will kick in the reverse way to catch them. This might have some use in the corner if you are trying to escape a jumping opponent that has cornered you.
Personally I forget the move even exists.

seriously man, we need more people like you.

this kind of info is exactly what I need to improve my gameplay. I'll make sure to use your tips, so the next time I go to arcade, I'll kick some asses. thank you man :)

btw, I've just got back from the arcade. well, too bad I was playing against one of the best players there. I did well though, specially considering that it was the first time I use my new team in arcade (Joe, Kyo, Shen) and that this player knows how to use Shen.

we both played for about 2 hours. my winning ratio was something near 1:3, which I consider not bad at all. not to mention that in most cases, he barely could beat me. uh yes, and he was using Doulin all the time ..... so I think I did very well with my new team :D

I've never enjoyed KOF that much since early 2002 times.

Yeah it's the same Diavle. He's been MIA for a while now. I wish he'd come back. The man was a wealth of information and a badass KOF player.

Glad you're enjoying 2k3. I have by far the most fun playing it out of all kof's.

Duolon can be a bitch, but once you get used to him he can be handled.

You're still better than 99.9% of the comp up here in MI :) Looking forward to playing you in 2k3 again; I've got some new Gato/Duo tag combos that are fun as hell and I'm exploring some cool shit with Yama as Leader.
This game never gets old.
