Comedy Central Refutes O'Reilly's Claim
Mon Sep 27, 7:14 PM ET
By DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer

NEW YORK - The folks at Comedy Central were annoyed when Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly kept referring to "The Daily Show" audience as "stoned slackers." So they did a little research. And guess whose audience is more educated?

Viewers of Jon Stewart's show are more likely to have completed four years of college than people who watch "The O'Reilly Factor," according to Nielsen Media Research.

O'Reilly's teasing came when Stewart appeared on his show earlier this month.

"You know what's really frightening?" O'Reilly said. "You actually have an influence on this presidential election. That is scary, but it's true. You've got stoned slackers watching your dopey show every night and they can vote."

Comedy Central executives realized, and O'Reilly acknowledged, that he was poking fun. But they said they didn't want a misconception to persist.

"If the head of General Motors was watching O'Reilly's show, that could be very important to us," said Doug Herzog, Comedy Central president.

"If you listen to O'Reilly, you get the sense that it was crazy longhairs behind the show," he said. "And it's not. It's great, smart television that attracts a well-compensated audience, most of whom are voting age."

Relax, said Fox News Channel spokesman Rob Zimmerman.

"Comedy Central must have lost their sense of humor," Zimmerman said. "Without Jon Stewart, Comedy Central would turn into the Great American Country Channel."

Comedy Central also touted a recent study by the University of Pennsylvania's National Annenberg Election Survey, which said young viewers of "The Daily Show" were more likely to answer questions about politics correctly than those who don't.

Comedy Central had no statistics on how many people watch "The Daily Show" stoned.

Although seemingly taken aback by repeated "stoned slackers" references while talking with O'Reilly, Stewart was ready with a joke.

"This election is going to rely on the undecided," he said. "And who is more undecided than stoned slackers? Ice cream or pretzels? Ice cream or pretzels? What's it going to be?

Whether it's the slacker or no-slacker zone, O'Reilly is entering it Oct. 7, when he's scheduled to appear on "The Daily Show."

So if Stewart's audience is comprised of stoned slackers, how would Herzog describe O'Reilly's audience?

"I'm not getting into that game," he said.

I'd like to take this moment to say that O'reilly is a complete douche bag. No real debating skills from what I can tell, just the ability to yell and piss people off.

lolz ... it's funny to watch all the little flyweights out there take aim at O'Reilly out of spite. Congrats, John, you and your 17 viewers can now take comfort that you've taken someone's comments out of context and made a huge stink of it. Since you're a genius now, maybe you can figure out how to get the same ratings as one of O'Reilly's ass hairs.

He has debating skills, he just gets guests much weaker than him on the show.

That doesn't really say much for his "skills" then.

I may be judging O'reilly to harshly, but it seems like everyone I have ever met that likes him also happens to be fairly stupid. I consider myself a relatively conservative person and I find it annoying that all conservatives get lumped in with people such as O'reilly.

Hey dipshit, remember when O'Reilly and Al Franken were on some show on CSPAN?

O'Reilly got torn to shreds and resorted to name calling because he had nothing else.

Book TV I guess it's called.

It's just funny that someone who's supposed to be professional can let someone get under his skin so easily and start acting like a little bitch immediately.

Jon Stewart is a very intelligent and funny person.

The problem is that he has to appeal to the same audience as South Park. I mean, Stewart is obviously liberal, but I doubt he would poke fun at Bush so often if it wasn't for the fact that it's what the audience wants. (Although, to be fair, they do poke fun at Kerry as well)

Most of whom probably won't vote anyways, 4 years of college or not. :)

Mostly.

Its like Hannity and Colmes (sp?)... Could they have possibly picked a more wimpy looking "liberal". Christ..

???

You have to love this brewing blind-conservative (as opposed to rational) hate for Steward...

Besides, show me the ratings comparison. Is it significant? Heck, Fox's own deception on ratings has been documented (incidently this is a balanced org that recently blasted Rather for his reporting).

Even if twice as many people watch O'Reilly, the Daily Show viewers are well, smarter. They don't see any intellegence in the shit that O'Reilly shovels out. Guess being smarter makes you realize how absurd most "news" is.

O'Reilly got torn to shreds and resorted to name calling because he had nothing else.

Or the most famous incident on his own show, where he told the son of a 9/11 victim to: "SHUT UP! SHUT UP! SHUT UP! (etc)" because the man tried to say what everyone with any background on the subject was thinking (transcript below).

Here's a laundry list of O'Reilly's "Shut Up!" moments (only up to 06/2003)

here's the exact dialogue:
To an Anti-War Protester Whose Father Died on 9/11
O'Reilly: "Shut up. Shut up."
Jeremy Glick: "Oh, please don't tell me to shut up."
O'Reilly: "As respect—as respect—in respect for your father, who was a Port Authority worker, a fine American, who got killed unnecessarily by barbarians—"
Glick: "By radical extremists who were trained by this government—"
O'Reilly: "Out of respect for him—"
Glick: "—not the people of America."
O'Reilly: "—I'm not going to—"
Glick: "—the people of the ruling class, the small minority."
O'Reilly: "Cut his mic. I'm not going to dress you down anymore, out of respect for your father. We will be back in a moment with more of The Factor."
Glick: "That means we're done?"
O'Reilly: "We're done."
—Feb. 4, 2003

EDIT: here's the complete transcript of the Glick interview.

AllI have to say is that "America, A Citizen's Guide to Democracy In Action" by the Daily Show fucking owns. Its a mock textbook (complete with the the area on the inside of the front cover to write your name and class number) that really teaches how the government's run (how senators, representatives are chosen; checks and balances, different branches, etc) and manages to be funny without it being a total anti-Bush fest. I think that regardless of your views, you can get a kick out of it.

Stupid juice is leaking from between your ears...

You might want to get some tissues, febreeze, and possibly a bottle of scotch guard so you can clean that mess up (stupidity smells and stains the carpet).

Balanced? Yeah, keep telling yourself that. C'mon Bobak - that whole article is a sploogefest for CNN, a rather bitter rival of Fox. Did you think I wasn't going to click on it or something?

So Daily caters to elitists, who get a kick out of more inside jokes - big deal. The Daily Show is about as far as you can get from an actual news show, however.

As for Glick, I'd have booted his ass too. He was being an arrogant prick and was trying to run the show - if you don't have the maturity to wait until another person is finished speaking, then you can't expect them to have respect for you. Nevermind his total inability to blame the people that actually did the killing.

You are such a walking abortion.

Oh and by the way, nice way to ramble on like a complete psycho. Do you think John Stewart is actually reading what you post.

Yep, I stopped reading when he started talking about tin-foil hats and pro-abortion suppositories that the "liberal minded gestapo" slips in innocent conservatives when they aren't looking.

Meh, If that's what you think of F.A.I.R., there isn't much more I care to do.

No - but I think your boyfriend might be. Does this bring back any fond memories of those sweaty summer nights, big guy?

I don't really have an opinion of FAIR as a whole, but you can't say that that article wasn't totally one sided.

Hey Bobak, thanks for reminding me to TiVo The Daily Show again! :)

I just hope that this time my TiVo doesn't record multiples of the same episode. If the people at DirecTV or TiVo who run the programming guide just put a short description of each episode, I wouldn't have to worry about that problem!
