It’s October which means I am now down to play and watch stuff that I know will make me jump and imagine somethings hiding in the closet ready to kill me later Lolol

But Layers of Fear is such a legit amazing game. Came out of nowhere in early access when I picked it up on a sale not expecting much from it. Clearly I was wrong...as it’s not a yearly October gaming experience I keep coming back to.

Curious what other games people are down to play come Halloween season?

I struggle to play these games. Some of them do horror better than any IRL haunted house experience.
Afflicted - the Manor just fucked my shit up in VR.

VR horror games can just F right off. Took me a month to finish RE 7 in VR. Not very scary at all on a tv...but you strap a headset and headphones on and it becomes a pants shitter

I would be seriously concerned for my health if I had heart issues. I would love to see my biometric numbers while playing these games.

Legit my Apple Watch yelled at my while playing RE 7. Said to pause and take a breather. I looked at the heart rate stats and it was elevated lol

I really am keen to get a VR lock myself into some survival horror.

The Evil Within was amazing!

Play Darkesr Dungeon.

The implacable, inevitable Lovecraftian decline into madness lives well within its code.

Brutally unforgiving RPG, I love it!

Death waits... for the slightest lapse in concentration!

Evil Within and RE7 were pretty good. I don't get scared when playing games but my GF usually gets super freaked out when it comes to games like that. Can't wait for the new RE8 to come out to play.

Every year I dabble in a bit of Fatal Frame because I never finished the second and third games but every year I have less and less time to play.

Every time I see this thread from the main forum I think it says “The Evil Wasabi...”

The original Evil Within is fantastic as straight survival horror, and the sequel is also really fun, but it leans much more heavily into stealth action than traditional survival horror. It plays really well though and keeps the fun elements of survival horror (I suck at the genre) without the frustrating ones.

EW 1 also has some of my favorite DLC that I can remember. You play as that big dude with a safe for a head for one of them and the gameplay is quite different, and then in the other two you play as Kidman, who was voiced by Jennifer Carpenter IIRC (but only in the first one, not the sequel).

I vastly preferred The Evil Within 2. Loved it so much that I even went back and bought the first game again despite not really liking it at all. Liked it more after playing the sequel.

Anyway, picked up this gem on Switch today. Horror based Souls-like that draws inspiration from both Salt & Sanctuary & Castlevania. So, by proxy, draws its inspiration from Dark Souls and Castlevania. Draws strongly from dark gothic fantasy aesthetics. Great OST. Just started playing. Has potential. Good horror vibe.

Graphics make all the difference. I remember when I thought Clive Barker's Undying was scary. But now you can't be frightened by those polygons.

I think the last game I was truly spooked (but not lingering) by playing was Doom 3. When that came out, playing at night in the dark, with the EAX mode on the surround sound. At least the early game when you venture out to find that scientist with just a shotgun and this was before you could get that mod so you could attach the flashlight to the gun.

Some of the scenes in Max Payne (or Max Payne 2) with the dead baby crying and the nightmare sequences were pretty creepy.

I saw that on the eShop last night and wondered how it was, glad to hear it's solid so far. I'll have to give it a shot. I consistently don't do well at 2-D Soulslikes, for whatever reason (I'm also much worse at 2-D fighters than 3-D ones, though), and am always on the lookout for the one that will finally click.

At $22, the buy in isn't prohibitive. The aesthetic seems to borrow something from a combination of Salt & Sanctuary and Dragon's Crown. It's art design is a sort of 'mid point' of the two.

There is a narrative, character and world driven quests, NPCs to interact with and the like. It has a decipherable story so that is good.

Gameplay wise, it has a lot in common with Salt & Sanctuary. The game's input delay feels awfully similar. The skill progression is tree based, one for each of the four weapons and one for health and stamina and such. Each weapon has it's own unique ZR function too, with weapon speeds largely dictating how and when you'll use various weapons. L quick swaps between them. There are also consumables a la the Souls series, which you can also quick swap with the R button. A uses whichever consumable you have equipped. There's also gear that provides various benefits and alters the character model as well.

It’s surprising they pivoted so hard on the mechanics with the sequel.

It’s the opposite for me. The better the graphics, the less an impact the horror has on me. I love horror games on the PlayStation, the wobbly and unsettlingly dead, stilted looking graphics and motion work really well for horror. Even after having beaten silent hill 1 a few times, it still unnerves me to play it. That game has this serious, sinister tone where you will never be safe in this town kind of feel to it that i haven’t felt in another horror game.

Clock tower is also an excellent game (aka clock tower 2 japan). I may have to check out undying sometime.

The PS1 era graphics somehow seem perfect for horror games. Has that real lo-fi aesthetic

I'm gonna use this opportunity to say that Silent Hill 1 is a better game than 2 and everyone is welcome to try to refute me. lol.

SH1 really gets close to perfection in terms of a survival horror (a stupid Japanglish marketing term from Capcom Japan that somehow got widely accepted) and I don't think anything surpasses it. I'm serious. SH2 definitely does surpass it in terms of story but a game isn't a JUST a movie despite the direction the industry is taking for the past few years. Gameplay is tighter in 1, story is better integrated into gameplay, exploration is more rewarding, etc. etc. etc. I could go on all night long about things that SH1 does right vs. SH2.

I really don't mind PS1 graphics but I feel like that's a mental feature (defect?) mostly comes from people that grew up with it. Been hearing lots and lots of people in disbelief that anyone would ever want to play a PS1 game in this day and age, let alone emulate the graphical fidelity on modern indie games.

oof, yeah I didn't get far in RE7 VR...just had a moment of realization that I was volunarily playing a "get murdered repeatedly" simulator and just stopped.

yup. I've literally torn off my VR headset for this stuff. It's just too close.
I need to hook up a heart monitor and plot it out while I play this stuff.

Yeah I have to admit that RE7 in VR is just too hardcore for me. Especially when you're playing it for the first time and don't know where to hide so Jack just murderfucks you over and over.
