What's the deal with the Neo-Geo never having a good beat-em-up..?

Why doesn't the Neo-Geo have any good beat-em-ups (not one-on-one fighters, side-scrollers)??

It always puzzled me. Just imagine a Streets of Rage 2-caliber game on the Neo-Geo. That would be sick!!

heh.

you're right, that never occured to me.

probably sengoku was good, but it's too retro for me.

i also hear Sengoku 3 is good, besides the control issues and somewhat evident lack of animation.

besides... i hate beat em ups

I'd say it's because one-on-one fighters were the genre that basically KILLED the Final Fight-style beatdowns (and everything else in the arcades in the early 90's). And since the Neo was home to so many great one-on-one fighters, it only makes sense that no solid side-scroll fighters really showed up. Although I'd have to give up some props for Robo Army.

Well, pre-Final Fight beat-em-ups sucked hard. But Streets of Rage 2 and FF really set a higher standard...

And the 3D offerings have been pretty nice too. Spikeout, Zombie Revenge and Gekido come to mind...

I think a 2D beat-em-up by SNK with fully interactive environments (weapons, tables, etc.), an awesome soundtrack, and fluid controls would rule.

Maybe, but I doubt we'll see another on the Neo after Sengoku 2001 (which was a pretty crappy game, incidentally). Back in KOF's heyday ('94 or '95 or so), I'd always thought that SNK should've made a side-scrolling beat-em-up with the Ikari Warriors and the Psycho Soldiers. Something like a custom non-MVS cabinet with 6 characters (Clark, Ralf, Heidern, Athena, Kensou, and Chin) punching on robots, or soldiers with headbands, or those weird smiling teddy-bear things from the Athena NES game.

One thing that always bothered me about NeoGeo side-scrolling beat-ups is that the MVS only allows for 2 players. The best side-scrollers let 3 or 4 (or more) players play, like the D&D games (obviously) & King of Dragons, Avengers (3 players), The Simpsons (4 players), and my personal all-time favorite, Konami's X-Men (based on the very, very short-lived 80's cartoon show). There's nothing quite like playing that game on the wide-screen 6-joystick cab (you know the one) with five of your buddies at the same time.

Was Captain Commando (the side-scrolling beat-em-up) on the Neo-Geo??..the last time I played it, it must have been over five/six years ago.
I liked that game....I've been searching for it on emulator for ages....
Erm...I liked Cadillacs and Dinosaurs and my all-time favourite -Streets of Rage!! ...damnit that game is cool! ! !..I still love playing it on my Megadrive!

I remember playing Mutation Nation on the Neo-Geo but that wasn't the best.

..........thinking about it, other than if Captain Commando was on the Neo I cant think of any titles that really stand out.

Mmmh I wondered about that, too!

Since I love games like Knights of the Round, King of Dragons, Towers of Doom, Shadows over Mystaria, Punisher and Nick Fury, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Dynasty Wars 2, Final Fight (all episodes), Turtles in Time, etc.

I think Sengoku 3 is a nice consolation prize, cos it maybe has got not many different foes and the endbosses are not that cool, but the combos and juggles are pretty cool and the playable characters have are fair animated (not superb, but fair).

ALL OF YOU´VE FORGOTTEN THE "LEGENDARY GOLDEN AXE-SERiES" from SEGA!!!
What a game was the first one...
Hmmm, on Neo is the best one Sengoku II, and behind that "?", "?", maybe Sengoku 2001???
I really loved "Streets of Rage" and "Final Fight - Guy"...So i was a little bit unlucky about that situation on Neo...

Personally, I loved Sengoku 2 and 3 (especially 3). Whikle the controls weren't super tight, they were decent enough for me to really enjoy playing it every time I get a chance. It's the best Neo BEU anyway... I like Burning Fight too. Don't ask why.

Whenever one of these discussions breaks out, I always have to throw in my personal fave BEU of all time: Alien vs. Predator for the CPS2. Now that's a beat, rip, slash, smash, kill em till they die kinda game, and it kicks all kind of ass. Nothing like tearing through a throng of slimy aliens with your trusty spear. I've never seen anyone debate that.

any beat em ups 2-D different to Capcom or one more than:
Final Fight (sequels, I wait roms of Final Fight 2 and 3 in Kawaks).
Alien v.s Predator
Warriors of Fate
Cadillacs and Dinosaours
Captain Commando
D&D games (Shadow over Mistrara is one of the best beat-em-ups.)

A v P is probably the best beat em up there is.

Behind that is Cadilacs and Dinos.

Too bad Capcom didn't port these babies...

Doesn´t anyone like The Punisher? I remember it
to be both detailed and fun. It got such a nice
Final fight feeling to it.

I bought it for a German guy to compensate him for
money lost in a wiretransfer, but of course i would have to test it first. :D

Come on now, let's not forget the immortal River City Ransom for the NES. Co-op kick ass school boys learning/using karate to save their girlfriends from street punks. Earning money to buy stats and moves was a sweet/innovative idea. Why there never was a sequel I'll never know?

So true this game is one of the most bad ass games on the NES. There was a sequal to this, maybe 2. I know there was one on the Super Famicom, but it never saw the light of day here in the US.

And what about Robo Army? Wasn't that tittle good?

I still have lots of fun playing it.

I find that the neo has a lot of great beat-em-all. I only have burning fight but I have tried Many other games and I found them better than the beat-em-all on other support. Sengoku 3,Mutation nation are for me the best examples.
