I went to go see the Last Samurai last night and didn't have high expectations, I was a bit worried about the whole Tom Cruise/Samurai thing. My worries were put to rest soon though. I was totally into the movie from start to finish. The fight scenes were great, the set's were great, and most of all; the story was great. This was the best $8 I have spent in a long while, I will definitely get the DVD when it is released.

Also, when Tom Cruise got off of the ship and arrived into Japan for the first time it totally reminded me of Last Blade. That whole 1800's Japan feel and the old look of the architecture. Juzo's stage anyone?

Anyways, great movie. Make sure you see it!

I saw it and was a little disappointed. unlike most everyone else im a big cruise fan and i had really high expectations for this film. for those that are wondering what kind of film it is think of "Dances with Wolves" with samurai instead of indians. i think dances has this film beat however, it was just more genuine and beautiful.

-spoilers?-

The Good?

Well the first battle scene in the forest was badass. i loved hearing the battle shouts and shit emminating from the mist and all the nervous noobs with guns getting mowed down by the badass samurai.

the scene where cruise is surrounded and he realizes he doesnt have his gun so he goes all samurai and shiot then cuts off that one dudes head. totally cool.

sparring sessions with wooden swords and the generally scenery, towns, landscapes, etc were beautiful.

The bad?

How long was this film? For one of such magnitude it seemed so short. there didnt seem to be any dull or unnesesary parts but yet there seemed to be very little developement of the various characters.

Cruise literally goes from an alcoholic US soldier to a samurai in training in about 15 minutes worth of screen time. he was never really ANYBODIES enemy in the film. he was accepted by the japanese army, the samurai, then the army again, then again with the samurai with literally NO apprehension on the japnese part. everyone welcomes him in with open arms (except one dude who was angry for like 2 minutes). what made dances so amazingly cool was the relationship between the white man and the indians. you witnessed it develope from absolutely NOTHING to something very special. what prevented this film from doing the same thing? Im not sure.

Most of the battle scenes seemed bland. mainly the finale. small scale braveheart. nothing special except for the mass suicide at the end.

I didnt really love or even like any of the characters. prolly cuz you didnt even get to know any of them. cruise was midly apprealing but was definatly distant. you could tell he was acting the part, not like so many of his other films that just seem to fit him so well. when that one dude sacrificed himself to the gunfire so his friends could escape i was simply like "yeah yeah i saw this coming. who was that again? the leader guys brother or son or something? blah doesnt matter hes dead."

ending was wierd and im tempted to do some research to see if thats what really happened cuz it seemed so hollywood.

basically if Dances with Wolves is a 10 then this ilm is an 8. Ill still buy the DVD though.

I was disappointed. His overacting towards the beginning really got on my nerves, plus the ending. What a joke.

So far, I thought it was the second best movie of the year . I liked Master and Commander better and still have to see Big Fish, Sea Biscut, and LOTR.

I was never bored, LS kept me into it the entire time. It did NOT seem like a 2 1/2 hour movie.

The only problems I had were
A. It was a little pretentious at times

B. A few line seemed to be ripped straight from fortune cookies (i know, that's chinese not jap. what ever)

C. How the hell could Tom Cruise learn Japanese and become an expert martial artist in just one year.

anyway ***1/2

uhh it's pretty easy to tell, for one i could look at IMDB.com and tell if they were really japanese or not. it's also pretty easy to pick a japanese out of a lineup of other asians, there really aren't that many japanese actors in the USA, most of the time they have korean or other asians playing all asian roles, and you could also tell by the accent they have when speaking english, and when speaking japanese....

you ever hear of the lakota sioux? or the battle of little boghorn? or any of the plains wars that happened in the us in the 1800's? custer played a mojor role in the american's losses of these wars, and he's also become a major historical figure because of his losses, and because of his stupidity.

Saw this flick a couple days ago TWICE. It's down right my favorite film of 2003 (though I'm sure it'll be considered 2004) since Tears of the Sun back in March... and just recently The Gospel of John, which could be argued about being a "film" since it is Scripture come to life in the form of a movie rather than being a movie.

Anyhow. I won't say the film wasn't without it's flaws, because there were more than a few. But for the few it did have, most was spot on accurate. *Actually it's the first film Cruise has done in years that I actually took him seriously in, though I was skeptical about at first. **As for him being a Samurai master in just one year... that's not I saw it. I saw it as a man who became as good as he could get, and when the shit hit the fan he just did his thing and was lucky enough to live. The movie doesn't play him up to have the swordsmanship of Katsumoto or even the dude that hated him so in the earlier parts of the film (his sparring partner).

***The reason everyone accepted Alderich is simple. #1 The Progressive Japanese Imperialists needed his guidence and it was about "greed" both times around (before and after his capture). Katsumoto learned to respect him, as did the others as a Gaijin no doubt, but one who's path was the same as them, and had proved he understood better than he had before the situation. ****I always took the sword fight with the five guys before saving Kastsumoto, as him having the gun in his shoulder holster... but realising that #1 ---It would attract to much attention for what he had planned. and #2---He was changed in his mindset and didn't want to have the upper hand, he was either going to let destiny and his somewhat good skills with a Katana prove him winnar... or he'd die. If anyone can prove that he didn't have the gun on him, or that he indeed left the gun in the room... I didn't catch that part.

The ending was not contrived at all. It kind of reminded me of the movie EL CID where all Rodrigo wanted for his King was to be a King, act as a King... rule as a King and not be a punk bitch. It took Katsumoto and the systematic slaughter on behalf of a punk Emperor and the Progressive Impeialists under him, to realize that he needed to assert his will over that mustachioed Japanese dude who I'd have gladly ran through with a Katana, and castrated with a Tanto knife. Thus the Emperor became a man upon seeing Aldrerich with Katsumoto's sword... his fallen retainer who died as he lived for the oath he'd taken. What is so dumb about that ending?

Great flick... but it's just my opinion, but like ASSHOLES everybody's got one!

SPOILERS!

How was the ending a joke? Did you want Kastsumoto to skip down a road of roses happliy ever after? He served his purpose, defending the Samurai. I don't see any better way that they could have handled the ending.

i think he meant the stupid part where cruise crawls into the shoguns room and hands him the katana then goes off to live happily every after with the dude he killed wife.

as for him having the gun but choosing not to use it? that thought never crossed my mind. if i remember correctly (i dont really remember) cruise was messing around with his gun, spinning the chamber etc then that one general walks in and gives him the money etc next thing you know cruise is leaving in a hurry to find that samurai leader guy. i just assumed he forgot the gun in his room.
