OK, so I think I got a boot copy of Metal Slug 5 from ebay.
What do you guys think?

I looked at all the MS5 scans on http://mvs-scans.com and mine does not look like any of them. Not the real one, MS5 plus or the known pirate version.

Without a doubt this one was repaired. You can see a few wires and windowed EPROMs solder on the board. I don't mind if it's repaired but for $117.50 USD I don't want a fake.
I also don't see SNK anywhere on the PCB.

Thoughts?... other than how much of a sucker I am :)

Yeah, lots of MS5 boots floating around. If the label isn't printed in blue with a serial number, it's almost always a boot.

Thanks for the reply guys. I'll message the seller and see if I can do anything about it.
The label is white and not blue with no serial. Heavily faded, rounded edges and on backwards.

If a moderator can move this to 'Boot or No Boot' that would be cool too.

Those are always a red flag.

Yep, anything that is not through-hole chips is a red flag. If the chips do not have the NGH number printed on them, red flag. If they are not SHARP/Toshiba (sometimes unbranded) it's a red flag. If they are all EPROMs, red flag. If the boards are not marked SNK, red flag. If any board has chips with more than an NGH number, (common in Puzzle Bobble boots) red flag. :)

Regards.

No luck. I showed the guy what a real MS5 looks like from http://mvs-scans.com.
And sent him the link to this thread with the opinions on it here. He didn't want to give me a refund.
I opened a dispute with ebay and they sided with the seller.

The seller did not say it was original (or fake) in his auction but I should have known better. He has enough bad feedback that I should have waited until it turned up again here on the forums.

Any luck on getting a return?

Funny, how one has to mention stuff is legit or not. So ebay now told you, that it is totally okay to sell boots, while throwing out anything chipped or modded. Those double standards.

I actually tried to dispute their decision and I asked ebay why do they feel it's OK to sell fakes/bootlegs.
I haven't gotten a response yet.

hmm.
maybe this seller has more boots to peddle?
it could change their minds(ebay) if everything(boot) this weeny puts up gets reported?
put link for auction/seller id? no way you should get stuck with a +100$ fake. try paypal too?

Wow, even after you proved it was fake?

I don't know why I didn't think to try paypal as well. I'll give it a go. Thanks for the idea!

My thought was maybe ebay does not believe I proved anything. More than likely they didn't really take any time on the matter and just processed the dispute.

Paypal doesn't allow for the selling of any bootleg merchandise (one of the reasons places like aliexpress no longer accept paypal) and it is (supposedly) a slam dunk refund if you have any communications from the seller saying, "I never claimed it was legit" or similar.

Also, in addition to a paypal claim; if you used your credit card as a funding source you can also file a chargeback. I'd let the the seller know those are the next 2 steps if he doesn't issue the refund immediately.

Just so you know it's expressly written in the eBay terms of service that counterfeit items can not be sold on eBay period. I have had to file a claim for same problem twice and PayPal sided every time for me. Maybe try saying counterfeit rather then bootleg as some people may not know what you mean as it's just some hourly help handling these claims and maybe they didn't connect the dots that it's counterfeit. But did you really buy it from bill burger? He's legendary in the arcade scene for selling broken shit. If you did buy it from him another fun fact is your now banned from ever buying from him again. Sometimes he bans people for even asking if a cart is genuine before bidding. Just google his name you will find a lot of "satisfied customer stories" ;-)

You should get a refund but it's quite clear from the eBay pics that it's a boot. Hope it works out for you.

this was an auction even? WTF is going on with the ebay crowd - 3 people willing to pay $100+ for a boot...

oh, this one here is also nice, same seller:
King of the Gladiator - somebody ought to report that one. (It's a hack of an SNK game. By its nature no debate as to its legitimacy.)

Just looking at the bid history, it looks like you swooped in in the last seconds and outbid $2 to win the auction. Another case one could make was that you saw this, watched it, then waited until the very end to outbid and win it.

In either case, it seems to me like you didnt look at either of the pictures, or bothered to read the part of the description that states:

unopened cart, i will not open this cart, i only care if it works or not if you care about what is inside its best not to buy this one as it is sold with no warranty or returns...

So, one would argue that you didnt care about what was inside, only about outbidding someone else so you could get teh rarez for a "steal".

My opinion? Put it on the shelf next to the rest of the hoarded crap that you're never going to play and let it serve as a lesson to you to:

1) Learn how to use your eyes
2) Learn how to use your brain
3) Learn how to use common sense

Or maybe try to pull off all 3. Whatever's clever.
