Millions of dollars are lost because of cheapskates, including those that want demos but never buy the full game.

Look at DOA Ultimate or whatever it's called, people can play part of it for free and most of them don't spend a dime on the full version.

"It can't be emulated", "I'll buy it used or gameshare".

"this game is a must buy" "Already played the demo, so been there done that."

"it has a great story" "watched it online".

With the rising costs of development, and no slowdown of piracy, used game sales, and other shortcuts to play without paying,
it's natural for companies to make alternatives to make more money to make up for the money they lost from people that manage to get their products for free.

People sooner blame companies than the consumers that expect to play things for little to nothing.

And overall, if it wasn't for some DLC projects, a lot of videogames would have missed out on extra content,
because THE INCENTIVE to add more would not be there, because developers make LESS money because of piracy and used games.

So that would result in only adding the minimum amount of content and saving anything extra for a sequel/new edition (and DLC is better because people don't have to wait as long or pay as much for a new addition for the extra content.)

Can someone, like Taiso, explain to me this game is/who is this lightning character? Is this a character that has been in a previous FF game? After FF9 the next FF game I played was...FFXIV.

My interest was piqued since there is apparently some cross-game promotional event right now in FFXIV that features Lightning.

First there was a direct sequel called XIII-2 and this game Lightning Returns is a sequel to that. Supposed to be some big reaching story thing from Square Enix with the world in FF XIII but I don't understand it and could not get into XIII as it felt way to strange to me.

XIII was a self contained game that had an ending which was perfectly fine.

But I know that S-E had announced this big thing they intended for the XIII storyline called 'Fabula Nova Crystalis' saga or somesuch.

Essentially, it was a ten year plan for games to be released focusing on that world.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito were both also part of it.

I believe Final Fantasy Agito became Final Fantasy Type 0 and was released on PSP, while Final Fantasy Versus XIII has now been changed into Final Fantasy XV.

They also decided to release a sequel to XIII called XIII-2. This sequel was not needed at all, but is actually a vastly, VASTLY better game than XIII. One of the very few PS3 games I've even bothered getting Platinum for. I really liked it, and it made me appreciate XIII more.

For XIII-2, they manufactured a series of events after the end of XIII in order to extend the story. XIII-2 ended with a brutal cliffhanger, following suit with the established norm for the 'second act' of any three part drama.

So now Lightning Returns is the end of the saga.

And the reason Lightning is appearing in FF XIV is as a cross promotion with Lighting Returns debuting on Japanese store shelves.

The event in XIV will only go until early December, but they'll bring it back in February next year when the game gets released again.

The voice language DLC for Lightning Returns is free for the first two weeks, btw. Obviously, they want people to buy the game when it streets. I look at it sort of in a similar vein to the Catwoman DLC from Arkham City. Except even now, if you found a new and unopened copy of Batman Arkham City, there'd be a redeem code for the Catwoman stuff.

Which is really what S-E should do with this voice pack. Just pack in a code as a free DL for new buyers.

How many people would have loved this game had it catered to their nostalgia for the series?

I want S-E to do this for real. Just make a 16 bit version of the game and throw up on Android and iTunes store and see how people react to it.

If the game would look like the thing above I'd probably be interested in it. Right now however, anything 13 related is cliched whiny shit (even for FF standards its soooo bad) with annoying characters, weeaboo fapbait like Vanille (who seriously needs the dick) and not worth playing plus Lightning (aka Cloud in drag) is a shitty unlikeable protagonist anyway. Oh well, at least Squeenix decided to make her tits bigger, feminist empowerment ya'll.

Same. For some reason the FFXIII Facebook page says that the Lightning returns demo is out already but I can't find it on the EU PSN, arse.

So if all the flaws you find about the game were presented in a 2D, 16 bit format, you'd be more inclined to possibly think better of it?

How does that make any sense?

The story would be the same. You'd still think it was all cliched, you'd still hate Lightning and Vanille and you'd still be annoyed at the story.

Would returning to 2D turn based gameplay really erase any of your misgivings about the series?

That's what I've been arguing for a long time now.

In fact, I'd say that the 3D Final Fantasy games the vocal fanboys hate are a victim of their own technical prowess.

We've had this discussion before and it still hodls true:

the older sprite based games do not rate any higher on the nebulous 'quality scale' for narrative, characters and plot than the newer entries. If their aesthetic and narrative elements could be broken down into a liquid and poured into a bucket, they'd probably all be about the same number of gallons.

If you want a darker and more serious FF story that puts the characters through a more realistic set of consequences for living in a politically complex world with dynamic character relationships, go play Tactics or, and believe me when I say this to you, play FF XIV A Realm Reborn. That game's story has some seriously dark plot twists and narrative elements. I was shocked to see some of them, actually. Implied child molestation, rape and murder in a world defined by power hungry factions and the various forces they employ come up more than once.

Yoshi P even said that the Final Fantasy series suffers too much from myopic, innocent storytelling and he wanted to do something that was a bit more serious, mature and easier to believe.

It's not the mighty Diablo 3, mind you, but it treats the subject matter with more gravity than you might expect out of a company that so many claim are marketing to weeaboos.

I obviously wouldn't be as bothered by the overall faggotry of it, the cringeworthy cutscenes (which would be slightly less cringeworthy in 2D), the melodramatic shit the game forces down your throat all the time.
Basically fuck FF13 and everything related to it.
