as well as the aesthetically boring setting of revolutionary period America that lacks the sweeping vistas and majestic spires of renaissance Italy, AC III is a definite step back and a low point in the franchise.
I'm a history geek so it tickled my fancy not to mention the Vita counterpart was right up my alley literally.

It looks fantastic. My problem is that this arrives two weeks after Pokemon X and two weeks before Watch Dogs. I'm buying, just not day one. Try not to spoil too much for me, would you Taiso?
Fire Emblem: Awakening, you just got bumped to second best game released this year.
That sir...is a bold statement. Admittedly, I'm finding it difficult to disagree with you. Although I doubt anything will topple Animal Crossing: New Leaf for my pick this year. I myself just unlocked my ship and crew last night. And by far the most impressive thing (for me) are the shanties that your crew sings whenever you sail the high seas.
I just unlocked the diving bell last night, although I didn't take the time to try it out. I think I can admit that this is my favorite game in the series. I love the freedom of the open world. I think the characters (main and story) are the best in the series, sans Ezio. And the expanded sailing aspect is a series highpoint.
It's not perfect, there're still a few small things that could be improved upon, but I feel this is a GotY candidate.
But it'll probably be blown away by either The Last of Us or BioShock Infinite.
Would I need too have played the other games too enjoy this installment ...I really like the pirate premise
But scared I'd be lost on the story
Recommended but not necessary. The bulk of the AC4 story revolves around Edward Kenway, with side missions and collectibles that drop additional info about the series story proper. Those bits of info will go over your head, having not played the previous entries, but it'll be a minor loss. AC4 is first and foremost...a pirate action game.
