I've been friends with the guys who run my local used retro game store for probably 15 years now. Their prices are OK, but with all the overhead of a physical location, they obviously have to pay low prices to get inventory. The only thing keeping them in business is that there are no shortage of idiots in this town who will sell their shit for less than half of what it's worth. They're good guys though, and since you can usually assume they paid 50% of the price tag on an item, if it's been sitting there a while they'll usualy take an offer as long as it's not below 50% of what the price tag is. They'll hook me up because they know I buy things to play and not flip. If for some reason I unload something there, they give me a lot more than they would some average guy. Still, I do most of my buying through forums at this point. Better prices, seller doesn't get fucked on ebay fees, etc. Usually all I get from the local game store at this point is bare consoles if I want to try a mod I haven't done before.

There have probably been 50+ times I wanted to tell a customer to meet me outside so I could give them more for their items than the store would, but I've been shopping there so long that I'd never be able to do that to them.

If these brick and mortar shops do sell below ebay prices, resellers are going to ransack the place for anything they can flip before the week is over anyways.

money > inventory

Product sitting on the shelf is wasted time, and time is money. It's better to make a little money quickly than a lot of money slowly... or never at all if the price is too high.

A couple of things.

The people who usually sell this stuff off for a pittance either: 1) don't give a shit about it and will just take whatever or... 2) are really in need of whatever they can get, today.

Another factor to consider (my friend owns his own game shop) is that these people often lumber ALL this stuff into a shop in a near to breaking bin bag or shopping bags. Even if they are told a price they secretly find unsatisfactory, they'd rather just take what they can get than carry all that stuff off that they don't really want/need to sell home.

However, on the flip side, this can be particularly amusing to watch if: 1) the person brings in load of crap that isn't resellable, like a broken PS2 with 100 shitty sports titles. Quite often I have seen ppl just ditch the stuff and exclaim "just throw it away then. I don't want it" or... 2) Kids who are underage who need parents with them to trade in. Time to risk their lives once again, riding back home with 40kg of Xbox gaming shite affixed to the ONE handlebar...

I watched a POS at a local shop here actually "negotiate" with a 11 year old kid for a couple strategy guides. He was selling them for 10 bucks a pop. The kid had 4 of them, the owner asked how much he wanted to get for them, kid replied "5 bucks for all of them?" Owner told him no way, so when the kid turned to walk out he said to him they were still haggling, hr then berated the kid, said he wasn't even being serious, and wound up giving the kid 75 cents for ALL 4, in store credit.

There are plenty of those over at strippo-gyppo.com, a sister site.

Unless it's CIB, maybe because that's pretty much what it's worth? They have to make money somehow.

The only successful store like that in my area is a really large comic book store than can afford to sit on the inventory and offer pretty decent prices because comics are the main mover and they own the building. Anything else is simply not feasible in the current market.

Quite often I have seen ppl just ditch the stuff and exclaim "just throw it away then. I don't want it"

Found about 30 2600 games outside the aforementioned store for that exact reason. That was pretty cool, even if Atari stuff is pretty worthless.

I've been playing the supergrafx version of ghouls and ghost and it's arcade perfect.

Actually that's pretty common. Most PC Engine versions are arcade perfect (when accounting for different ratios and less graphical power), even better in some cases you could argue that they are better than the arcade versions. Some guy has a whole website about that.

I like the PC engine arcade ports. Dunno, they're a lot of fun. If NEC of America had better marketing and brought more games over, I think it would've been a success here. Also, most of the good games are on HuCards. I've owned two TurboGrafx 16, thinking of buying another one (making it the 3rd time I've bought the fucking thing).

I do love the Forgotten Worlds port, that might be one of the crowning achievements of the PCE, music is outstanding, all levels exist. And damn it's just awesome.

This is good to hear. Does that mean 'most of the good games' can be played on the original white PCE without the need for add-ons, cards and god knows what?
