Kicked Out For Talking Saturn

Over the weekend I wanted to get down on some Fighters Mega Mix on the Saturn with a friend of mine. After ripping my place apart with no luck, I went to my local game store. I'm definitely lucky to even have a place near my apartment that caters to retro gaming.

However, the shop owner is a little weird, he sits in the back of the shop all day scanning over forums and ebay looking for the best deals to flip. He's a businessman and not a gaming and will brag about ripping gamers/customers off. This being said, for the most part, I try to avoid this store. But it's close and I really needed a controller.

So I go in, I walk up to the nearest clerk and ask for a Saturn controller. He goes in the back to look for the controller. In the mean time I start talking to a customer that is selling some of his games. He over heard that I'm buying a Saturn controller; so we start talking Saturn. At one point he tells me that he's getting rid of his entire Sega collection. Before I can even respond to this, the owner speaks up....

"HEY"
"I gotta pay rent here, if you guys keep talking you can get the hell out of my store"

At that point I look at what the guy is trading. Resident evil on the Saturn, D2 and illbleed on the DC and a boxed Sega Genesis. While I'm scanning over the lot, the owner hands over $45 for everything. I buy the Saturn controller and I'm out the door.

At first I was really fucking pissed. One for being pushed out of the door and the other because I just watched a guy get ripped off. There is no reason this guy needs to be a jackass but I suppose this is the nature of the business. If we want a local game store: It needs inventory, it needs employees and has to pay rent.

This left me conflicted. My favorite way to buy games is through the neo fourms and I love mom and pop shops but if this is way it works, is it worth it? There are a few game stores that have old stock but the idea that every game I buy from this guy is either a flipped deal or comes from a customer that he screwed over, makes me question the industry as a whole.

Yeah, I don't support many local gaming stores because it's just not economical to shop there. Their prices tend to be 20% above eBay, which is already an inflated market. I get that they have overhead, though. That said, the guy in question didn't really get ripped off. He had about $90 worth of stuff and the game gave him half of what it's worth. That's how used games/music/movie shops work.

Granted the store owner sounds like a complete douche-bag...

Bottom line is, nobody is being forced at gun point to sell their belongings below what "you'd" consider being ripped off.

If you're selling "anything" and you're offered below what you think is fair... leave, or find a higher paying buyer.

If you're buying something or looking to buy and the price is considered ridiculous by your standards... leave, or buy from a more reasonable seller.

True, but I for one don't really trust eBay and the like. Especially for the more expensive or rare games. Some shops are the only place where I can find authentic games, but at the same time get horrendously ripped off. They're my only real place to buy stuff.
I think I just need to get buying off these forums.

Had a similar experience with my local store..

The guy refused to sell me a used N64 controller..... he said they were only for matching up with systems to sell. He tried to get me to buy a new yobo one instead. like.. WTF..he only had a few n64 consoles (and like 20 controllers). I'm not a fan of 3rd party n64 controllers so I just left.

I think there is a clear difference between a mom n pop game store run by gamers and one run by reseller scumbags. Your experience will most likely be better in terms of service but a bit more expensive at the gamer run store because they tend to have a broader knowledge of prices for more stuff. The reseller scumbag is always a carny ass jerk but alot of the time, they have no clue. I've gotten great deals from these types on obscure stuff because they don't know/care to know if it's not a square rpg for snes/psx or a Mario game.

With these types, and I've made this mistake too many times, don't let your nerd get out of control and show excitement for stuff. That will put their con sense into curiosity which leads to eBay pricing. Go in, get a big stack and offer a low ball price for everything. They rarely turn this down if they are in business for making money.

He probably kicked you out because he thought you were going to buy the stuff out from under him that the guy came in to sell.

ripping people off is all part of the business. hell, look how well gamestop is doing.

for instance, i have an old white wii system i don't use. asked gamestop how much they'd give me for it.... $15

and they sell them for $69.99

who in their right mind would actually accept $15 ?!

Again, that's just part of the business. They don't need to buy your old Wii (hence the low price-point). However, some people need to sell things to get by or just to get rid of things they don't want/need.

I think most game shop owners are cranky because they are like 1 failed transaction from going belly up at all times.

While the shop owner sounds like a cocksucker, there are also some weird outlooks going on here about what a business is. If there are next to none of these shops remaining that's a pretty good indicator that they are making fuck all money.

The places that are really taking the piss are the ones that more and more shops keep opening up to offer. How much do you think it costs your local pizza crap hole to buy some dough and some cheese and sell that on to you for $15 a time? Round cheese on toast at 1000% margin? Hence the new one opening every twenty minutes.

...but..but their public access commercials are so awesome!

I had a co-worker who went to a birthday there last week..said it reminded him of the set of a SAW movie.

not all of us. :D

I actually discourage individual sellers from selling to me for just this reason. I actually get a lot of compliments for this practice (a little integrity goes a long way these days). Some people dont want to deal with the hassle of ebay or CL. hell, even forum sales can be a pain sometimes. Thats when those guys sell to me. My buy price has to be lower than value because I need to make money on the deal. Plus I need to sit on it for as long as I need to until it sells. At the end of the day, if my customer is happy with his transaction then I am happy. This is how it should be. Not enough businesses (game or otherwise) care about this simple little fact and that is both what put me into business and what keeps me going.

Naah, I've already learned my lesson in regards to that stuff. Ask the customer/seller to talk outside, offer him more for that box of goodies. Probably still get banned, but totally worth it for a good enough deal. Funny thing, at the local flea market, the owner there asked if I wanted to buy a box of stuff a guy had come in with since he wanted cash and they were out. Caught him as he was walking out of the flea market and got 2 N64s, an SNES, turtles in time, banjo-kazooie, goemon on the 64, and a few other titles for a pretty good deal, and the booth owner was glad the guy got the money he wanted.

I think that's the reason there are so few sucessful brick and mortar gaming stores. Ebay, forums, online gaming stores can all do it much better and much cheaper. Less overhead, better prices, better selection and the satisfaction of knowing the Saturn controller you're buying wasn't from the blind kid with the dead parakeet from down the street.

This day and age, who needs the middleman?
