it's always been about the money

This.

The games we all love are no different to the ones released now in terms of there goal which was always to make money.

The biggest difference from back then to now is it was smaller teams working on them so you used to get almost a feel for the personalities making the games. Now it's a 300 man team working on the next block buster so you lose that.

In 20 years the kids of today will be on wii-console.com talking about how the Zigurat consoles out now are all shit and the youth of today don't know their alive etc etc. There will even be bootleg Wii games sold for the price of a house deposit. probably.

My kids will start with Atari and work their way up to the pinnacle of all existence, the SEGA Saturn.

God I hope not. Well, at the least, they'll understand the concept of "SUPER FUCKING OVERRATED SHIT SYSTEM"

That sucks man. Touch screens are about the worst thing you could possibly use to play a video game. Motion controllers are a close second.

It's funny how the N64 is ok with me because of Golden Eye, Mario, and Zelda

The only reason the Saturn didn't age well is because of MAME. Once you were able to get most of those arcade ports emulated on a PC, the Saturn suddenly became about the First party games ... and they were ports too (referring to daytona and VF). Also, Nights is more overrated than Conkers. Have no idea why people like a game of doing loopty loops endlessly.

fuck the saturn

I'm still confused by all the hate the N64 has ever gotten. I probably spent more hours on the N64 with my friends than any other consoles combined. I guess it just hit at the right time in my teenage years. Plus we weren't a bunch of fucking video game snobs either. That probably helped.

A friend of mine was having a birthday party for his 5 year old son. Some months back I'd brought over my Atari 2600, and they got hooked on Kaboom. I brought the 2600 again to this party, and it was such a wacky sight seeing kids of 2013 screaming with excitement about beating each other's scores and surviving as the game speed increases. Pretty awesome.

None of them had ever seen that paddle controller before, but they still had a blast.

This guy gets it.

Unless you want to spend $200+ dollars to play a half-way decent game the Saturn is a heaping pile of who fucking cares.

Kaboom is one of the top 5 2600 games ever made.

There is no doubt about this. Still, the N64 library is a joke compared to the Saturn's. I'm sorry. Ports or not. I know those first party Nintendo games can tug at those hearts strings pretty tight for a lot of people, but if I'm going to get hard-gay over Nintendo (which I know how to do), it's not going to be with the N64 carnations of their key franchises..

CD Caddy? I was amazed by it, neighbors had one.

I was just talking to a co-worker about how if you punch a hole on the backside of a floppy you could trick the drive to write on both sides. Then we joked about how companies discouraged the practice while they where selling there own double sided floppies. He then told me how at one point he had 5 floppy drives on his machine instead of a hard drive because it was cheaper.

Have you guys ever seen an RCA CED Selectavision? Absolutely blew my mind:

Ced_cart2.jpg

Movies on vinyl, with weird caddy things that are ejected from the player when you put the movie in.

Some guy on Craigslist had an ad where he was selling a bunch of movies and the ad described them as Laserdiscs. There was no picture but I answered the ad and met the guy. He hands me a CED of Rocky III, and I'm like, what? This is not going to play in my LD player.

LOL...I've thought about picking up a CED player just for the heck of it.

I remember back in the day being excited when I added a second floppy drive to my PC. Yes! I can copy a floppy in half the time.

Well, welcome to the video gaming of today. People don't realize how much gaming has gotten away from the core gamer. Look at consoles now, they cater to the hardcore older gamer who play mostly FPS and over the top action titles. Don't get me wrong I'm not knocking this stuff in any way but we have all grown up and those 2D platformers and vertical shooties are a thing of the past.

Look around at the companies you grew up with, no longer do they make core games such as Strider, Gunstar Heroes, and Super Castlevania IV. Teams of hundreds of individuals without even working in the same room, or hell the same city are pumping out projects that rival blockbuster movies in budgets and advertising.

One of the reasons I'm supporting Sony in the next gen race coming up is plain and simple, I care about the indie games that are coming out, the games made with love and care of really small teams working together with like minded ideas. There will never be games like Metal Slug or DoDonPachi ever again simply cause it's not about making a game that make people reminisce anymore, it's about the almighty dollar.

I'm no longer surprised a kid nowadays have never touched a controller, or heard of a Sega Genesis. I just retreat back into my cave and revel in what used to be my childhood and do the best I can with what I have. Maybe one day a little known dev will put together a little 2D powerhouse system and have games made for that, sounds more like a pipe dream at best though......

I read this Panda and immediately went to an arcade last night. To my surprise there was quite a crowd there. I saw people playing third strike, CPS2 boards in Candies and a group of teens duking it out on DDR. It was a happy surprise.

But what you say is true. We can collect these old carts and pcbs but ultimately, the past is the past. The gaming industry has changed for better or for worst.
