So, tonight for leg day, I started with 100 reps of deadlifts. I'll say that again. I did a total of 100 reps of dead lifts, and THEN STARTED DOING LEGS. 10x10.

As with all workout routines, I make up my own hours before I actually step foot in the gym. Every good workout routine sounds like a great idea when I'm in the comfort of my own home. I pile on more and more, and as I write it up, I think to myself, "Wow, this is gonna be great! This is gonna make me grow!"

Then the moment of truth: I actually do it. And every time I do this, I think to myself how STUPID it is while I'm in the middle of it.

Tonight I started feeling bad for myself. I thought that this was a terrible idea, and I should quit. This whole weight lifting thing is stupid. But now that it's over, I am thankful for it. I look at myself, as vain as it may be, and think to myself: this is why I have the physique that I do (and I am NOT happy with it, yet). This is what motivates me to keep going. It takes hard work, and pain, and suffering to forge this physique with no drugs or supplements.

If you look on the television, and watch a movie with a person that has an impressive body, the average person cannot grasp just what kind of hell you have to put yourself through to make it happen.

This is for all of you that have no interest in using steroids. I am no dummy, I am well aware that roid users do have to work hard in the gym, too. But it's a plain and simple fact that it doesn't take as much work to get just as far (and farther) than a natty.

So, when you're suffering in the gym, don't ever feel sorry for yourself. It has to be terrible. It has to suck. Yes... lifting weights sucks. Anyone that says they like it must not be doing it right, because I think it's terrible. But the results outweigh the suffering. Don't feel sorry for yourself, and know that no matter what pain you're in, the outcome far outweighs the suffering.

I usually don't work to the point of pain.. If I'm too sore the next day I stop and dial back my weights

do I need to man up?

Im not overly into weight training but running I'm super into. Just recently beat a personal best, 53:22 for my 10k. Its not fast by any means considering im not strict with my diet and I do smoke occasionally. I'm working on a sub 50min 10k as I get ready for the Tough Mudder course this september.

I tend to keep 10km/h as my pace in between 1-2km bursts of 13-4km/h. Helps keep the heart rate at 180-200 for most of the entire hour im in the gym.

Still looking for one of these, though:

Three months of physio and other treatments on a year old shoulder injury (was originally told it was probably a muscle tear) and no real improvement. I'm starting to wonder whether it was actually a tendon tear. Has anyone ever had one, and if so what happened, what did you do? Happy ending stories very much appreciated...

Just to add to my own question, anyone ever had cortisone injections?

I get cortisone shots at least twice a year for my left knee since it has been torn to all hell and back and I have arthritis in it. Very helpful and you will start to feel relief in about 30 minutes to an hour after the injections.

Looks interesting. My dilemma at the moment is whether I should be using the shoulder at all or resting it completely. The physio hasn't been able to give me a straight answer but I'm going to take this lift with me and ask her opinion on whether I should be doing stuff like this at the moment. Problem is they don't even know what's wrong with my shoulder in the first place, there's never been any scans done on it etc.

Thanks Sazae, can I ask you, how long does the relief last and have they ever mentioned any potential long term issues from the shots?

My best friend sometimes gets them for his shoulder and he had heard about being careful of getting them more than a few times a year.

Found an article from the Mayo Clinic with more info:

Corticosteroids cause a number of side effects which can be limited to the area injected or affect the entire body. Side effects increase with larger doses and repeated clinical use. For this reason, physicians may limit the number of injections and the cumulative amount of corticosteroid that is given. Typically, corticosteroid injections are not given more often than every six weeks, and usually not more than three or four times a year. But these are only guidelines. A patient's situation dictates the timing and frequency of treatment.

Side effects may include weakening of the joint, increased blood pressure, elevation of blood sugar, and decreased ability to fight infection. Evidence of these side effects should be reported to the doctor monitoring the condition.

The relief usually lasts for about 2-3 months.

I know the health risks associated with getting the shot so often but my knee is in really bad shape and since it's not rheumatoid arthritis none of those treatments will work. Just having multiple surgeries for an assortment of things from torn tendons, removing a part of the bone, etc have left it messed up. I have gone to multiple physical therapists and gotten slight relief but my orthopedist has let me know pretty bluntly that within the next 10 years I will most likely need to get it replaced. Sucks because I'm only 35, that is an operation for those 65+

My first attempt at practicing posing for my physique contest coming up in three months. Not flexing at all, and no pump at all. I made this so the bodybuilding guys can help me, but figured I'd share it here. I know fuck all about physique posing. Thought it would be easier than it is... will have to work on it.... and get way tan.

That makes it pretty dang impressive.

I'm not exactly an expert, but since it seems like you're still figuring out what kind of facial expressions to use while posing I'd suggest looking to the greats for inspiration.

Some of Lou Ferrigno's facial expressions can really convey confidence, intensity, or something more laid back. See what you think:

Good luck!

Thanks man, but I'm doing physique, and not bodybuilding. Physique is sort of like a type of modeling version of bodybuilding. You gotta stand there with a shit eating grin on your face, and you don't actually pose the same way as bodybuilding. You just turn, turn, turn, turn. Then you put your hand on a hip, or whatever.... still learning. But it's sort of the pretty boy, not super ripped or super muscular version of the sport.

i'm a couple of weeks away from finishing up my current program

it's been pretty great and i've improved a ton in the course of it all

my endurance particular is almost quadrupled what it was when i first started; i can fire off rapid jump squats all damn day now

right now i'm trying to figure out what to move on to next

i've been doing nothing but building lean muscle for a while so i was thinking of getting into heavy lifts to try gaining some size

i don't particularly want to gain size as i like how i look and move now, but my knowledge on power lifting/olympic lifting is definitely lacking compared to everything else i do

think it's time to start to scouring craigslist for some bar/weight sets

(side note: craigslist is an amazing place to get deals on fitness stuff; especially a month or two after New Year's when all those resolution go unresolved lol)
