I agree with the sentiment behind the article. I like seeing the console manufacturers go for the jugular. This is not a peace accord. Competition makes everything better.

May the best one win.

Which I hope is Sony.

This was Sony's response:

That's awesome! Good on Sony for making a move and not playing it safe. This makes E3 a little bit more interesting now. We'll see if Sony follows through or falls flat on their face.

So it sounds like you can only buy and sell used games through these specific partners?

Goodbye private sells.

Fucking ridiculous.

If they charge for used games they will probably be able to sell the new ones for less. They will probably make it a time limited thing too so after a game has been out for 3 months the fee will drop, then again after 6 months etc until there is no lock fee after 12 months.

Its not all bad news.

I will probably buy a PS4 on launch.

Same. Tbh, I've never owned an xbox of any kind. the whole system just screams "FPS Doug" to me.

A Japanese 360 would have been nice for the Cave, etc... shmups. I'll have to settle for the PS3 Ketsui that's just around the corner.

MS will make more from this but more importantly the developers stand to make more which is a good thing. Games development is very hard these days because of the massive budgets required. The more they make the more variety of games we get. This isnt a bad thing provided the used market lock is time limited.

Everyone needs to chill their beans and wait for the full details to be released.

That's the theory. In practise, the whole thing may turn out as yet another way of DRM, with the fee as the icing on the cake for whoever profits from it. Just because there's a time limit on it doesn't mean there won't be certain exchange of information between your Xbox ONE and MS as soon as you insert a game, be it new, "half-new" (with fee) or old (without fee). This doesn't seem like fundraising for poor developers but distribution/copyright control to me.

Anyway, I will not support a system like that. I don't copy stuff or download warez but buy my shit, there's no reason for me to accept any further cashing-in or big brother control once money has changed hands at the video game store. I realize that the piracy problem is rampant but punishing honest customers for something all those hackers, warezZ d00dz and millions of freeloaders who benefit from their craving for recognition will do anyway is complete bollocks.

Its just a new system of commerce. In the old days we paid once and that was it, now they nikel and dime you all the way through. Games are getting more and more expensive to make, the devs have become too risk averse, thats why we seem to just be seeing sequel after sequel instead of new ip. Im sure the end result of all this will be a better video game industry overall in terms of quality and variety because everyone will be making more money and they can afford to take a gamble here and there. Dont forget, MS lost money for like the first decade of the xbox brand, its not all beer and skittles lads.

You make it sound like MS would have a right to overcharge on us just because they released a completely unreliable piece of hardware. They made the conscious decision to throw money out of the window instead of fixing the holes in their roof, now they have to deal with it. Their problem, not ours, and I'm not going to compensate them for it.

As for the cost of development, that's a mixed bag for me. 90% of the games that get released nowadays bore me to tears and the ones I like rarely are multi-million-dollar projects. If the extra money raised by charging a fee for playing used games would be used to fund innovative developers that don't need a whole Hollywood movie studio for the production of their games, I'd be all for it, but as Shroom already said, it's MS we're talking about and it's kinda naive to believe they would use the extra money for anything but stuffing their wallets.

Oh they will stuff their wallets, dont worry about that. I still feel it is the developers driving this though. MS give them a deal on the used games in return for exclusivity. If MS pull this off correctly it will murder Sony while they try to play catch up while developers release exclusives for MS in return for the used game scheme.

For the record, i too prefer smaller games, the kind of thing you can generally download on xbla instead of the big block busters. The people you find on these forums though is the minority compared to joe average game player who wants to play COD.

Some of those comments are pretty decent.

I really hope "xbox1984" catches on.

A decade ago I'd never thought the console hardware itself would ever be considered a "consumable".

If this comes to pass I am out of current console gaming and will stick to my long back log of previous generation games. Look like I will be picking up a backup xbox slim soon.
