Statement from Larry Hryb aka "Major Nelson"/Microsoft-

Xbox One and used games
Over the past few days, we have been reading comments and message boards following the Xbox One announcement. There are a few questions regarding used games. I wanted to clarify and provide this official statement:

The ability to trade in and resell games is important to gamers and to Xbox. Xbox One is designed to support the trade in and resale of games. Reports about our policies for trade in and resale are inaccurate and incomplete. We will disclose more information in the near future.

They need to have the real deal details soon. This shit storm is not going away even after they do. They already have turned off a ton of gamers.

Translation: "We've made a terrible mistake."

No kidding.

I think they purposely left it vague so as to gauge peoples reactions and adjust accordingly.

Clearly, the idea of effectively killing off the used market hasn't sat well with users.

It's time to just build a fucking righteous home theater rig with no DRM and HDMI out, and play beautifully emulated Neo games until our fingers bleed. Tune on, turn in, drop out.

The question I still have is what happens years down the line when the servers get shut off and you can't authenticate a game you paid good money for? Everybody's talking about right now, not years from now. I know in 10-20 years time the PS4 and Xbox One will be able to run on a pocket watch but the whole thing will be as useless as a paperweight if there's no network to check the games. I can see why they want to have something in to protect publishers. Whenever I buy a game from a company I like I want to support them by buying it new so they get most of the money and not just going to GameStop.

The other thing I don't like is the 24/7 Kinect that's always on. Always listening and from the video I saw on Rev3Games it can also see in the dark with a night vision like camera mode. That's some 1984 shit right there. Why do I need to talk to the camera, what's wrong with the headset they bundled with every system? I can't use voice commands on that? If having that bulky looking POS means it's going to raise the price of the console up even 20 bucks I don't care. The only thing I liked about the even was the new controller where they look like they finally fixed the fucking D-Pad and looks a bit thinner. All I can hope is that will work on a PC like the 360 controller does.

And I sound like a broken record but I want to be able to bring over my Live Arcade games if everything is tied into my Xbox Live account. I love how people say, well consoles are small enough! Just get a spliter and have more then two hooked up to your TV at the same time! Well, I don't really have the room to have all my systems out at the same time. If they really want to brand this as the ONE thing I need for my multimedia experience then they should find a way to get more then our worthless gamer scores and avatars onto the system.

The posts replies to that Major Nelson article are well thought out. The one in particular that I thought was dead on mentioned that the fact they are dancing around the details instead of just coming out with it means they know we know it will be bad and the gaming community at large will be very much against it.
On a separate note, people's concerns about the always-on, won't-work-without Kinect lead to what I feel is the biggest knock against the Xbox. The idea that an always on Kinect could be used to send data back to Microsoft or third parties for use by marketing companies is a scary thought. I remember when it was discovered a few years ago that certain Android and MS phones were made with this feature secretly built into certain models to use the webcam for data collection.

It will be PC and handhelds for me this coming generation.

They don't give a fuck about your purchases.
It's all about disposable, easily devalued digital phantomware. Enjoy today! Means NOTHING tomorrow.

I started shopping for a cool HTPC today. Really done with that whole bag. The underlying contempt and absolute hubris they have towards their customers has just gone off the scale with this new console.

RIP and good fucking riddance to the corporatist American entertainment business model.
Go back to hollywood, wall street, washington DC or wherever the fuck you white haired, saggy balled, and greedy non gamer faggots come from.

They've clearly outstayed their welcome and I'm looking forward to watching this faggot shit go down in flames.

If sony shits out anything that even remotely resembles the xbox one, I am so fucking done with this shit.

I'm preparing my cyber lair as we speak.

Dragon's Crown will be a hell of a game to go out on if Sony follows MS' lead.

Chicago Tribune had an article about the X-box one today....was not exactly pleasant and featured plenty of 1984 references. The guy was wrong about some facts, but that kind of bad press is definitely a hindrance.

LOL @ ever trusting Microsoft with anything. Ever.

360 earned your loyalty, at a huge cost to MS (each console was sold at a huge deficit, just to look good/compete, not forgetting the faulty PSU and RROD + 3 year warranty fiasco) and now they want their compensation for selling you a broken POS console which they constantly replaced and repaired for free at a loss to themselves. Bit backwards?

This obviously isn't based on any sort of truth, but seriously, when PPL bought 360's, they broke, and PPL constantly sent them back and thought it was 'ok' for MS to constantly just throw endless money at their own problems... not the kind of company I want anything to do with personally.

Sony aren't angels either by any stretch of the imagination, however, even their arrogance wanes compared to MS's 'business' practices.

You can tell how I feel about MS when I actually feared they would backtrack on all their announcements vs all the negativity and criticism they have received. People still believing they're 'all that' when they are just a plain and simple horrible plagiaristic, monopolising POS.

All this aside, all and any PPL who bought any digital downloadable content and believed either company would allow you to 'take it with you' was being painfully naive. It was NEVER going to happen. Even if it was technically possible, I still doubt they would have allowed it. Just like reselling all those PS2 HD compilations on PS3, they're is just too much money to be made from reselling old shit, in bundles most probably. Bionic Commando Re-armed double pack for £11.99 leading up to the third installment @£9.99 - or the trilogy for £19.99. Out of sheer convenience, you'll buy it all over again. And they know this. Not forgetting Nintendo... Next up: GC classics HD remastered for WiiU followed by Wii HD remakes.

Sony allowed re-downloading some of the digital PSP games on Vita without charging extra for it (no idea why they didn't allow that for all games, but if I have to guess, it's legal constraints), so that gives me a little hope that they wouldn't charge for re-downloading your digital PSN games on PS4.

The fact that we can't get a straight answer from anyone suggests that whatever the real case about used games and online authentication is, it's going to be bad. I'm trying not to make a decision right now because shit tends to get blown way out of proportion on the internet as we all know, but none of this sounds good. And we don't have any real guarantee that Sony isn't planning the same shit. Although I think they already said they aren't going to fuck with used games.

I was primarily a Sony guy in the PS1/2 days, but Microsoft really won me over with the 360. So much so that I just assumed I'd be buying their new console over the PS4. But everything I've seen and heard has just completely turned me off of it. If Sony has learned from their mistakes at all and doesn't fuck up like last time, I may be a returning customer.

Microsoft doesn't cater as heavily to the niches I enjoy anymore, so for me, the order is:

Sony
Nintendo
Microsoft

I will probably buy a PS4 on launch. Unless I see a title for 360 that I absolutely must own, like an exclusive Resident Evil, Devil May Cry or Castlevania title, will wait.
