some other interesting screenshots...

Note that Magician Lord apparently used to have a timer at the bottom-right hand corner of the screen. Strangely, the game still does have a timer with an invincible enemy that comes out to kill you when it expires, and you can set the timer in the MVS soft dips... but the timer is not visible at all. Why they changed it is anyone's guess.

The high score is lower too, in the final version the default high score is 50,000 but here a lower score has somehow become the high.

Also, the level layout on stage 1 was different.

And then there's The Super Spy... this is kind of a minor difference, but note the difference in the lifebars. This alternate version of the game has the lifebar as 10 little squares, instead of the 8 bigger rectangles. Also a default high score of 50,000 instead of the 30,000 on the final version.

This is why I'm interested in those prototype cartridges that were found in that other thread, I want to see if the versions that were found ended up being earlier versions that have the same differences shown in these screenshots.

Judging from BBH's avatar gif, apparently E. Honda's hundred hand slap as well. XD

Great Magician Lord pics, I remember seeing those somewhere back around 1991 as well. That's funny about the timer- soft dip timer option works fine on my mvs cart. Not sure why they choose to hide the timer in the game by default but its definitely a pain.

Huh you're right, guess I'm mis-remembering things. Still don't know why they hid the timer by default.
