I'm actually pretty impressed by the redrawn textures in these screen shots:

i think a few people were disappointed that PS2 games (in real time) never looked quite as good as VIII's ballroom scene

I'd like to replay this, I don't look at it as a much of a FF game. Still had fun what I played.

After I got done playing it, it was my favorite FF game except for IV. I recently revisited VII and my eyes were opened to what a truly great game that is. Right now, I put it above VIII, whereas the opposite was true before.

But if they localize this for the west, two things:

1.) Don't let Digital River distribute it. Just put it up on Steam.
2.) I will definitely play it again to see what I think of it all these years later.

When I played it, it was a huge grind fest. Hours and hours of just drawing spells to raise character attributes.

IV is god like to me. It was the first Final Fantasy game I had played after coming off of Phantasy Star on the Sega Master System. The game really set the tone for what an RPG, ANY RPG, could do with an outstanding visual and audio presentation for the time.

Worst FF game besides 13.
Wouldn't even pirate.

IV is such a perfect expression of what makes for a great FF game without all the excessive stuff that eats up so much of your life. On top of the great story, awesome visuals, killer soundtrack and, most importantly, a simple turn based combat system that never gets old (amazing feat, that), the side quests are never so tedious that get bored of doing them and the game feels grindy without actually being grindy. Simply put, it does not waste of your time and you can play through to completion within 20 hours.

I have no problem with a 60+ hour RPG as long as it engages me, but FF IV gives me the same type of satisfaction without needing to be 60+ hours long.

It can't all be Diablo, man. Have some realistic expectations.

It's a given that Diablo is the end all be all when it comes to mature and dark games. Perfect storytelling in a tone that not even Resident Evil or Silent Hill can touch.

If you like Resident Evil or Silent Hill more than Diablo, that just means you're a fan of those games is all.

Edit: I know we're beating a dead horse here, but when somebody annoying as all fuck says something as stupid as the shit Saner's been spouting, even someone as normally magnanimous as I try to be has to take his shots.

FF8 is the NGE of Final Fantasy games including the giant middle-finger of an ending.

Congratulations.

PS: not mature enough

Agreed. Just an awful game. If they're going to remake this, they need to change everything. Maybe add in Cloud and Kefka, and make it a fighter. It'd be way better than that trash we got in the late 90s.

I hate...

the unlikeable jerkoff cast of characters, especially squall and that ADHD chick in the yellow dress...whatever her name was...I probably named her Cuntbag back then. They're all horrible.
weapon upgrade system forcing you to grind
the stupid magic drawing system which forces you to grind
the convoluted GF linking stuff
the retarded story (even for a final fantasy game) and all the emo shit that comes with it

This game pretty much ruined the entire franchise and all future parts except 9. I gave this game two chances and I was disappointed twice.

the only good part about this game was laguna. I'd take a HD remake of 9 over this anyday.

FF VIII was the second FF game I ever played (Mystic Quest was the first) and I loved it. I just wish they would actually straight up remake 7, 8 and 9 instead of doing stuff like this. Doesn't even have to be super maximum console quality, just redo the prerendered background and bring it up to somewhere around PS2 HD remaster quality and it'd be awesome.

I enjoyed the game overall, but it has a LOT of flaws. The lack of character development for anyone that isn't Squall or Rinoa is one of my major pet peeves about FFVIII. I didn't mind the drawing system, though yes, it did get tedious, as did the card game. Hopefully they'll look into giving FFVI and IX more attention.

I don't know...
Not about the VIII being bad, but about the fighting game thing.
I've looked at videos for Dissidia. But, for the life of me, I can't figure out what's going on.
It feels odd to look at a game like Dissidia and just wish there was a full fledged Blitzball game.

I don't think FFXIII is that bad. Seems like a pretty standard FF game to me. The series has always been fairly linear, XIII just tried to streamline it. I'm just not into JRPGs anymore though.

I remember that at one point I started flying with a university on a 3d overworld map. I could not find out how to land that university or how to get out of that map screen. Gave up. I had no internets back then.

This is one of the things I loved about it.

It was about two characters.

It wasn't what FF fans expected, but I was cool with it.

I loved the idea that Squall was unlikeable at the start of the game, and for a lot of people unlikeable at the end. But I had no issues with the narrative, the characters or the game.

Not mature enough, though. I guess I was just a fan.

Despite its flaws, maybe that's why I enjoyed it so much. I had almost nothing invested in the series up until that point so everything was new and exciting. Squall was a shitty teenager and I guess he played his part well. I loved all of the other characters though. Especially Quistis and Laguna.

Not a long time ago, I considered it the worst in the series. I decided to give it a shot few month ago. I was amazed by the game's narrative. The writing was so good, and I unlike recent FF's, it seemed to be targeted towards adults, not teenagers (in terms of themes and focus).

I'm one of those who think FF7 doesn't need to be remade (improved controls, resolution, texture and framerate are welcome though), but I do think FF8 will benefit a lot from a remake. The game was slow and the backgrounds were static and bland in comparison to FF7 / FF9.
