So I recently acquired a new laptop and it came preinstalled with windows 8. The Reviews I read had all been luke warm but I hate change and would imagine most people do as well; so I am trying to give it a fair shot. I installed classic shell to give it that familiar start button. I want to like it but It just doesn't have that "snappiness" that windows 7 had. This laptop even has a touchscreen so I have tried using the tiles, etc and really am not impressed. Also I don't use any software that is windows 8 specific (don't know of any that is) So I am considering reinstalling 7. What are your experiences?

I fuckin hate it...

It's basically as fast as Win 7 but the features are annoying... also you'll find there's ONE particular mandatory update that will freeze and crash your pc.... you'll need to install the updates around that one first... and THEN install it...

It's a pile of teh crap....

Windows 8 is fucking shite, I hate it. My mate upgraded my laptop to it when installing me a new HDD (my original packed up), and it's the worst thing I've ever let him do.

Whether it's any good on a touch screen or with a tablet, I don't know; but on traditional hardware it is just really not user friendly imo. I only hope that the "rumoured" update which is alleged to reinstall the "popular" W7 features is true and that it arrives sooner rather than later.

My advice to anyone with W7 thinking of upgrading - D O N ' T

I see no reason to upgrade from 7 to 8 at this moment.
I'd rather wait for Windows 9.

My engineer installed it on his computer at work. He installed it, hated it and spent about 3 days making it look like windows 7. He claims it's faster but I'm not convinced.

Everything is simplified to the point of insanity.

It might be nice with a touch screen though.

I've been reading about the windows "blue" update thats supposed to be coming out during the summer sometime and it is supposed to essentially turn 8 into 7... aesthetically anyway. I have spent some time disabling features and tweaked the registry. Asus installs quite a few proprietary programs so I either turned those off or uninstalled them. Classic Shell is a really great program for those that are forced to use 8. It forces windows to boot to the desktop instead of the metro ui and gives you a nice start button and found a skin to resemble the windows 7 start button. I appreciate the info guys. I think I will wait and see what the windows "blue" update does and if it doesn't get better, I'm switching back to 7.

P.S. Hey Rot!

Windows consumer OSs have basically turned into Star Trek movies where only every other one is good: 2000, ME, XP, Vista, 7, 8. That having been said, I have higher hopes for Star Trek: Into Darkness than for Windows 8.

It took me forever to finally go from XP to 7. I loved XP and think 7 is a slightly better version of it. I'm not upgrading to anything anytime soon.

Windows 8.1 (Blue) will be coming out soon and that will address a lot of the issues people have brought up. A government contract I am working with is upgrading all of their touch panel displays in different offices to 8.1 and from some testing it has gone over very well in comparison to 8.0

Geladen, gelacht, F8. :)

I've tried Win8 and found it quite awkward, that's why I'm not planning to update my laptops (Vista and Win7, respectively) anytime soon.

It pisses me off that I really want a new computer and they pretty much force you to getting 8. I guess I'll hold out for this 8.1 update and see what happens then. I just really want a new PC that isn't running 32 bit Vista.

Windows 8 is really a great OS, if, and only if, you have a touch screen. I used it for nearly eight months before buying a new machine with a touch screen and I fought with a lot of its quirks. It is so much faster than Windows 7, especially when booting, that I found it a worthy upgrade, but the OS itself never made sense until I started interacting with it via touch. I love it now. I have a Sony Vaio Duo 11 and the combo of the transforming ultrabook tablet and a nice touch OS really works well together. I kid you not, I cold boot and am at the desktop in less than five seconds. The gestures and the swipes to navigate are very nicely done. I was at a conference last week and a few people saw me working on the computer and commented on how slick the interface looked and said they had heard nothing but bad things about Windows 8, but really liked the way it was running. I basically told them the same as above. It's only worth it if you have a machine built for it... Other than that, stick with Win 7.

The problem is Micro$oft have been trying to catch Apple's OSX since it launched and fail miserably every fucking time.

If there was more software compatible with OSX then I'd happily ditch all my company's PC's and go out and buy Mac's.

Kind of. It only really became more obvious when Vista arrived. But, from what I've heard, W7 is actually decent. Maybe not an OS X beater, but certainly a solid OS.

As a non-windows user, I'd be interested in trying out W8 using a touchscreen interface. Strangely, it just seems more appealing than the usual windows business...

I just got a new pc like 2 months back. It's the first time I've gotten to really use Windows 7. I like it a lot more than Vista. I've been thinking about getting a notebook but the whole W8 is a bit off putting as I'm just figuring out 7.

When I go out looking at computer stuff I don't do too well. The people try and talk to me but all I hear is.

"Many machines on Ix. New machines"

Oh. Yes."

"Better than those on Richese."

The whole 8 is better with a touch screen thing to me is very tempting though as I've not had a touch screen notebook before.
Though not sure what I would really use a touch screen for.
