Even though season 7 had mostly groan-worthy moments... and they just wouldn't let that Deb loves Dexter story mistake die, I still give them props for killing LaGuerta (which we all knew had to happen once she started poking her nose in Dexter's business). I wasn't really that excited for season 8, though. Then the trailer came out...

I have to admit, I'm in now. Dexter looks to be getting a solid antagonist the likes of we haven't seen since Doakes. I always wondered why Doakes was the only one who thought Dexter was fucked up. LaGuerta only poked in his business because she was following Doakes' trail. Basically all of Miami-Dade Metro is completely incompetent. ;) I guess that's why they needed to bring in a specialist.

Anyway, I'm probably more excited for Dexter than I have been in years. Here's hoping they pull off a solid final season.

looks like an improvement, but we could only go up from last season.

easy prediction: that new shrink- thats the big killer that dexter hunts for the season.

Yep, she's likely teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts this semester. ;)

Wow, Season 8 looks very promising.

I stopped watching after Season 5, so I have some catching up to do.

I'm hopeful for this season too. As Chris pointed out, I've stuck it out this long, I'm not going to quit the series now. Although, the last ep. of last season left me saying, "wtf, this is gettin' plain silly" several times.

I'm also curious as to where Michael C Hall lands after Dexter. He's pretty good that lovable serial killer thing which most folks probably know him best for.

I like seeing Deb all coked out and living fast.

I figured this season would be all about Dexter being the main villain, but I guess I was wrong.

bumping because no one is talking about the final season.

the first bunch of episodes have been pretty fun so far (not the best, but better than the last couple of seasons).

with the ending of last weeks season i think they are telegraphing how the dexter end game will work out. its mid season and they finally gave the last round some direction.

So it's over.

And while a lot of people are like "that sucked"

Let me be one to go on the record saying that the ending was complete genius. It was genius on a level that most people don't get. Won't get. Are incapable of.

spoiler

The season finale of Dexter, and the finale of the entire series, was a collage of scenes that encapsulated the silliness of the series as a whole.

Dexter, for 8 years, has been about a serial killer who no one catches. And he's not just any serial killer. He's killed so many people. Over a hundred in the 8 years that the show has run. And maybe even more in the scenes unshown. Yes, some characters caught on. And they mostly died. But think about it - how much suspension of disbelief do you need to swallow the story line of Dexter after the first 2 or 3 seasons? This is a show that had to die a long time ago.

And this suspension of disbelief is encapsulated fully in the scene where Batista and Quin watch the video of Dex killing the brain surgeon, and Batista grills Dex with the intensity of a George Foreman Grill, unplugged. He let's Dex go. Quin doesn't care. And once again Dex goes free. Then he waltzes into the hospital, and takes his sis for a boat ride. AND NO ONE STOPS HIM. The finale is basically gloating there - gloating at the viewers that they have gotten away with murder, just as Dexter has. They can have a killer walk in and out of a hospital during a moment of Force Majeure and no one will ask any questions. Just like the viewers. No questions.

Then there's the amazing metaphor Terri Schiavo. The scene where Deb is on the bed and Dex is like "I'm not going to let you go on like this, is representative of the show's producers, most likely Hall especially, saying "no mas." Like Schiavo, Dexter was going on too long. Ending the show was a mercy killing at this point. It goes out with a whimper, while Breaking Bad, a younger yet better written show, is about to go out in a blaze of glory and be remembered as one of the best shows ever.

The finale was a party of sorts. It was a farewell where the producers come out and basically tell you, in so many words "YES, WE FUCKING KNOW." They then proceed to embellish. The final season has been silly. Extremely silly. But it has been silly to make a point; the loyal viewers are either morons or silly too. I am a bit of both. And so as the audience that all watched the finale bitches on social media sites about how much the finale sucked, keep in mind that Hall and the other producers are seeing the viewers all react, through the reflection of the counter jukebox in the diner. If it's that obvious to you all, it's obvious to them too.

And that's something to think about and ask why.

***SPOILERS***

Great post! Considering how they could have ended it, the finale could have been a lot worse. After season 2, Dexter stretched viewers' suspension of disbelief to the limit and beyond. Yet we kept on watching. And therefore the show was a success. I, for one, am sad to see it go, and I thought the ending was better than The Sopranos or Lost. Killing Deb was a bold move. Honestly, with Dexter presumed dead yet surviving the storm, they could make another season. I'd watch it, haha.

Killing Deb wasn't a bold move, it's the move you had to make for this season. Dexter has never been about high-stakes or consequences. When it broke hard from that tradition, and Rita was murdered (though, arguably she was a character most people hated by the end of that season) it yielded them their fan-favorite season. Dexter was never put through enough pain. His character never felt real remorse or had to suffer, and that made a lot of the seasons feel completely flat to me. Killing off Deb was essential, and I'm glad they didn't wuss out on it like it looked like they were going to. Oh well... I don't think I fall into Charlie's camp of thinking it was a big F-you to the fans, but I think he's on the right track ;) Overall, glad it's over... Maybe the spin off will be Dexter driving lumber around America. Like big road truckers, but with a serial killer.

I stopped watching after season 4 (Trinity killer), because it was so silly and sisyphean.... like groundhog day gone bad. I read up on the finale and can't believe this atrocity. Oh well, Lumberjack Dex it is.

Agreed. Some people are too invested in the series. They're constantly over analyzing everything --so much that it's almost like the writers have put a big "kick me" sign on those viewers' backs.

LOL, they need to come up with something for me to watch. It seems like all my favorite shows are ending, some sooner than others: Breaking Bad, True Blood, Sons of Anarchy... and they cancelled The Killing (again) just when things were getting interesting. The return of 24 is a ray of sunshine in an otherwise gloomy TV outlook. Looking for some show suggestions here people ;)
