Just saw Silver Linings Playbook

I have to say - I have never had such a hard time sitting through a movie that I regarded, even as I struggled to watch, as genius. I was crawling out of my skin trying to sit through all those scenes of people just screaming at each other over and over...

Great film though. Definitely deserved whatever awards it received.

It will be years before I watch the first two thirds of it again. Once was enough.

My Mom made an interesting point about it too. If this movie had come out in the 70s they would have cast Deniro in place of Cooper. So it made sense to her that they would be related in this day and age.

I do think Bradley Cooper got really lucky to be cast in it.

it wasn't genius. It was the "as good as it gets" for this generation.

I really liked Cooper's performance, I guess I can relate to that kind of crazy.

Seeing ST:IR made me appreciate Urban's performance in Dredd even more. No one would guess it's the same guy. I mean, I knew who he was before and was impressed when I saw Dredd--but since this is the first performance I've seen since it just underlines it.

EDIT: one thing's for certain, the reboots are much more interested in developing Kirk-Spock than those two with McCoy.

Yeah, I get the same sense as well. I definitely think the reboots should primarily focus on those three, however, and their unique bond in all of sci-fi, and let the supporting cast just be functional. It's really the most memorable thing about TOS, the reason I even care about that show. Those three and their very strange and interesting friendship.

Just saw Star Trek: Into Darkness.

I really loved it. I wouldn't call it 'smart science fiction', but it was highly entertaining and I loved the numerous revisited elements of other Trek movies. I had two quibbles about the film, but they are decidedly minor so I am going to give them a pass.

Not the first summer blockbuster, but by far more engaging and less problematic than Iron Man 3 in my opinion.

I'll agree with Bobak's rating: 4.5/5

I agree, though I'd probably put it around a 3.5 star movie. It was campy and dumb at moments, but I enjoyed it. My comment upon leaving the theater and a friend asking me what I thought:

"It was like a chili cheese dog. You enjoy it while you're eating it, you'll probably regret it later, but you'll likely have another."

The fact that Naevia made a cameo at the end was awesome.

Django Unchained - was a pretty solid flick until the final act.
Spoiler:
As soon as Schultz kills Candie, everything falls apart. Completely unbelievable action, and from there it just kinda meanders until a way is thought of having Django save the day.
Also continues the tradition of shitty, self-inserted Tarantino cameos. From what I reckon, I think the scenes that got censored for the Chinese release may have been one scene during the beginning where Django imagines seeing Broomhilda in the lake (it cuts away abruptly) and then later on during the mandingo fight - the editing seemed sloppy.

Again, pretty good flick, and I'd read a dissertation on it, but man, that final act fucking sucked.

lol @ anyone who thinks Leo deserved an Oscar. Don Johnson's the one who deserved it.

Just got back from Star Trek: Into Darkness.

I enjoyed it just as much as the first one, no more no less.

Definitely recommended for those who liked the first movie.

Amusing idea floating around the net: Baz Luhrmann should direct the BioShock movie.

I liked the first one a lot, but I think ID was better. The balance between great acting and fanservice was spot on. Definitely enjoyed it more than the original movies.

Vegas should start placing bets on what will be the worse game adaptation: Bioshock or Assassin's Creed.

Oblivion was flawed but it's very enjoyable for the visuals. The story falls apart in the second half, similar to I Am Legend.

I watched the new Red Dawn, and holy shit, it was terrible. Nothing like the original I remembered. The movie played like some shitty marketing propaganda mixed with 'Murika, and every American in the movie was Bradley Cooper from Wedding Crashers.

I got dragged into Fast and Furious 6. Haven't seen any of them since the terrible second one. The movie was entertaining for what it's worth, but I felt somewhat guilty contributing money to franchise movie making. My money should have gone to a quality independent film at a local artsy theater, but my friends don't roll that way. Instead we were treating to some disturbing action physics, improbable fighting sequences, and about two clubs worth of nearly nude women dancing on cars.

Vin Diesel looks the same age as he was in Saving Private Ryan, he just might be a reptilian. His IMDB shows possibly the least variation for any action star from the past decade. We have Riddick voice-overs, six furious movies, and the obligatory big tough guy taking care of kids babysitting comedy. And yet I'll still have to plunk down money on the next Riddick hoping it's the true quality sequel to Pitch Black.

I just wish there was some way to crowd source a film starring him and the Rock.

Add Jason Statham and you have my own personal holy trinity of awesome.

Expect it in the summer of 2015.

Spoiler for Fast and Furious 6 ending (post-movie credits scene):

Spoiler:
Jason Statham is shown as having killed Han in Tokyo Drift. F&F 7 is a lock to have him battling VD and the Rock.

I heard about this a while back. You can bet that I will be seeing that in the theaters. I already love the FF movies. They're so much fun.

There should be a movie where they play a band of space marines and have to fight aliens. Tell me that would not be awesome. It would be like Expendables in Space.

For the past couple minutes, I've tried to think of any reason that this would not be an awesome movie. I couldn't come up with it. Someone needs to make this happen. Ideally, it would be a new Starship Troopers.

I got to see a screening of Kings of Summer.
It's billed as a contemporary coming of age movie in the vein of john hughs movies from years ago.
As much as I wouldn't really care about a movie like that,
it was actually very cool.
It had some great casting for the parents and newer no name younger actors.
The personalities and relationships are great and it's not as dramatic
as I would expect to find in similar kinds of movies.
Actually, there was a lot of great comedic breaks to it.
Definitely worth watching.
It was cool, the director was there for Q&A at the end.
If I had to rate it, it would be really high.
I just can't fault it, good pacing, story, acting.
5 out of 5.
