hipster sci-fi.
Just saw Silver Linings Playbook
I have to say - I have never had such a hard time sitting through a movie that I regarded, even as I struggled to watch, as genius. I was crawling out of my skin trying to sit through all those scenes of people just screaming at each other over and over...
Great film though. Definitely deserved whatever awards it received.
It will be years before I watch the first two thirds of it again. Once was enough.
My Mom made an interesting point about it too. If this movie had come out in the 70s they would have cast Deniro in place of Cooper. So it made sense to her that they would be related in this day and age.
I do think Bradley Cooper got really lucky to be cast in it.

Seeing ST:IR made me appreciate Urban's performance in Dredd even more. No one would guess it's the same guy. I mean, I knew who he was before and was impressed when I saw Dredd--but since this is the first performance I've seen since it just underlines it.
EDIT: one thing's for certain, the reboots are much more interested in developing Kirk-Spock than those two with McCoy.
Yeah, I get the same sense as well. I definitely think the reboots should primarily focus on those three, however, and their unique bond in all of sci-fi, and let the supporting cast just be functional. It's really the most memorable thing about TOS, the reason I even care about that show. Those three and their very strange and interesting friendship.
Just saw Star Trek: Into Darkness.
I really loved it. I wouldn't call it 'smart science fiction', but it was highly entertaining and I loved the numerous revisited elements of other Trek movies. I had two quibbles about the film, but they are decidedly minor so I am going to give them a pass.
Not the first summer blockbuster, but by far more engaging and less problematic than Iron Man 3 in my opinion.
I'll agree with Bobak's rating: 4.5/5
Unless you develop Ulcerative Colitis. My comment upon leaving the theater and a friend asking me what I thought:
"It was like a chili cheese dog. You enjoy it while you're eating it, you'll probably regret it later, but you'll likely have another."

I really liked Cooper's performance, I guess I can relate to that kind of crazy.
I agree, though I'd probably put it around a 3.5 star movie. It was campy and dumb at moments, but I enjoyed it. My comment upon leaving the theater and a friend asking me what I thought:

Just got back from Star Trek: Into Darkness.
I enjoyed it just as much as the first one, no more no less.
Definitely recommended for those who liked the first movie.
Definitely enjoyed it more than the original movies.
Amusing idea floating around the net: Baz Luhrmann should direct the BioShock movie.
Vin Diesel looks the same age as he was in Saving Private Ryan, he just might be a reptilian. His IMDB shows possibly the least variation for any action star from the past decade. We have Riddick voice-overs, six furious movies, and the obligatory big tough guy taking care of kids babysitting comedy. And yet I'll still have to plunk down money on the next Riddick hoping it's the true quality sequel to Pitch Black.
I just wish there was some way to crowd source a film starring him and the Rock.
Add Jason Statham and you have my own personal holy trinity of awesome.
Expect it in the summer of 2015.
Spoiler for Fast and Furious 6 ending (post-movie credits scene):
Spoiler:Jason Statham is shown as having killed Han in Tokyo Drift. F&F 7 is a lock to have him battling VD and the Rock.
There should be a movie where they play a band of space marines and have to fight aliens. Tell me that would not be awesome. It would be like Expendables in Space.
