Without revealing too much (I plan on picking this up in a couple weeks for Spring Break) do they give any sort of logical explanation as to why Raiden returned to active duty? Like I have mentioned before they did a semi-decent job of tying him up at the end of 4, even giving him a new body.

This game turns into a Suda51 game from the final Samuel fight to the end.

Also, I really wanted to actually drive that motorcycle.

Shouldn't the PS3 output at whatever resolution you tell it to? My understanding is that the PS3 renders a game in whatever resolution (say, 720p) then scales it to whatever the best output resolution is depending on what options the PS3 video is set to.

I only have a SDTV, so I may be completely wrong but I think that's how it works.

*edit* Nope, it doesn't work that way. I did some digging and it seems more PS3 games than not do not support 1080i at all. That's kind of retarded.

Any game that says 1080p on the back of the box right away can support 1080i. Some games released even now at least go to 1080i, but most don't go past 720p. Sometimes a game will say it goes that high like MGS HD Collection, but only does 720p. WTF??? I am long over due on buying a LCD instead of just using an HD CRT. Every time I wait and almost buy a Sony 42" for a better deal or whatever... my roommate decides to short me on rent or some shit.

haha yeah I don't wanna spoil nothing but shit gets really crazy and I kinda loved it. it was a bit of a roller coaster for me as I was turned off by it at first but it won me over by the time I finished the game. This story is off the wall even by metal gear's standards.....

So I was playing this game last night and going through the codec conversations.

And Doktor talked about "The Selfish Gene" by Richard Dawkins. And then went on to explain how it relates to what the bad guys are doing with all those kid brains.

Mind. Fucking. Blown.

This game has EVERYTHING:

Killer control
Compelling leveling system
Fun environments
Excellent set pieces
Compuslory arcade element to play better
Great enemy attack recognition system
Nearly perfect challenge curve
Fantastic soundtrack
Great characters
Awesome story
Slick graphics and user interface

And now you add tangential learning to that as well?

This is an almost perfect game. The best I've played, when you look at all the components and how they form a complete gaming experience, since AC: Brotherhood.

This one is going to be hard to beat.

Even The Last of Us, which looks to be an incredible experience, is likely to fall short of MGR: R.

Watch_Dogs might have a chance of dethroning this for me.

And I will still likely love both of those games once I play them.

But this is the best game that's come out this year, and it will be some accomplishment if something comes out this year that is better.

I said it. Just accept it. It's true.

Devil May Gear.

Beated this game last weekend on PS3. Worst shit I've ever played.
The metal gear card games are better than this.

Terrible story, stupid jokes.

Impossible to enjoy if you are over 14.

Right now, I'm thinking MGR: R is #1 and Fire Emblem: Awakening is #1A.

But it's a huge year for games and I want to give some visionary titles like The Last of Us and Watch_Dogs a legitimate chance.

I haven't even written off Tomb Raider yet, and it's getting good buzz.

But as for right now, I'd have to say MGR: R is just inches above Fire Emblem in terms of overall quality. A smidge, if you will.

EDIT: And hey, Dead Island: Riptide is coming out!!!

You never know...I might really like it:)

Fire Emblem: Awakening is still my #1. But with so many quality games coming out in genres I love I don't know how long it'll stay up there. BioShock Infinite, GTA V, Watch Dogs, The Wonderful 101, Animal Crossing New Leaf, etc. My expectations for those games are so high. 2011 was awesome thanks to Batman: AC and Skyrim, but in the end I think 2013 will be an even better year of gaming.

I don't think I'm allowed to like GTA V because I'm over 14.

I still can't help but shake my head and laugh at that. What a weird shift in tone.

Been trying to clean up on trophies for this, but I've realized that I probably won't attempt to get the platinum. But, it's still been fun messing around with the unlockable weapons and costumes. I just wish they had tried harder with the story. That's really my only gripe with MGR.

So I just finished the game.

The last boss was...well...

Spoiler:
Wyler from AOF 3

Didn't diminish my enjoyment of the game from a gameplay standpoint, but um...yeah...

EDIT: Also, game felt kinda short. What's there is magnificent, but needed to be longer.

I felt the game was a good length for what it was trying to accomplish. It's like a nice juicy 8 oz. KC Strip. Meaty and enough to make you want to come back for more. That and thankfully MGRR doesn't suffer from a lack of unlockables like Vanquish did. That was one reason I didn't go back as much to Vanquish because there wasn't as much of a reward for playing it more.

That part damn near killed me from laughing so much

I am not surprised you are defending the length.

I really need to finish this game so I can join the conversation and stop being tempted to hit the spoiler tabs.

In retrospect, I think I have to also rescind my 'great story' praise.

Up until Raiden faces off against Sam, the game has an excellent narrative.

Then, when he gets to that dueling moment, I felt like the game took a turn from its own sensibilities and spun wildly off into the completely insane Suda 51 territory cited by a few others. Ruins the pacing, IMO.

The Sam duel seemed completely contrived and forced at the point Platinum decided to force it, like a loose end that needed to be tied up rather than part of the natural flow of events.

It felt to me like the game could have been a lot longer but somebody realized 'Oh shit, we've earned our money. Time to wrap this up!'

Bearing this in mind,I think I have to knock it down below Fire Emblem: Awakening. Sorry, Jack.

last night I started my "very hard" game, it's a little sad but I think this is the first time I've been truly forced to play the game right. That insanely easy parry that pretty much means I can never get hit unless I'm not paying attention at all is now mostly just a block and at best will only let me get a hit or two in on the real enemies that you have to beat up before you can chop em to pieces, I now actually have to pay close attention to patterns so I can get the tighter timed parry that results in a counter attack to do any worth while damage! I actually got beat up by mistrel(awesome boss wasted by brain dead difficulty levels before)... a ton of times! I even got frustrated and doubted the games balance a few times only to eventually get by when I got my skills up. Enemies don't just let you beat them up and finish your combos, they actually parry and counter attack you, some even bloody counter your counters! Because you really have to work to get to that blue spine, completely refilling your health is not so overly effective and actually makes alot of sense now.

Point being, on normal and hard the game is cool but you don't really need to play it... you will get to the end just by mashing combos and parrying every now and then. You don't actually need to give a shit until it's on very hard. I questioned a few friends about their decision to start on hard first in this game, but in this games case...I think hard is likely platinum's intended normal mode. I have to assume because this is a mainstream metal gear licence game they had tone down the default difficulties, which is understandable but I think in a way they did a bad job at that because I really questioned the depth of the game up untill now and was honestly slightly disappointed, it was a great game to me and I really enjoyed the play through, but being platinum, I was hoping for more of a godhand than a god of war kinda direction. Now I see the hardcore is in there, it's just all concentrated near the bottom! The balance is slightly questionable still however, it would have been nice if more of the risk reward gameplay awesomeness revealed itself more strongly even in hard mode, as very hard really is.... very hard... I don't even wanna imagine revengeance mode....

TLDR: game not as shallow as I though, play very hard mode and be forced to use the games mechanics properly.

Good news, since I was thinking about buying this soon for PS3 - but will now get the PC version instead.
