Well I just beat 3D Classics Kid Icarus today and I would have to say...it's awesome. It's only 150 coins in the eShop until April 7 and you could do much worse with your coins this month. If you don't want to use your coins the game is 6.99 like the other 3D Classics games that are available right now.
First off, this game is Kid Icarus through and through, some people hold this game as a classic, others hate it. Personally I really love the game as it was one of the games Gunpei Yokoi made during his time with Nintendo. Gameplay is pretty much tit for tat against the original with really only the backdrop being the thing that is added. I like the backdrops and the 3D is kinda neat for the game. I think 2-D games benefit the most from the 3D effect so it's a nice touch. Also this version is like the FDS version of the game and actually saves after each stage too instead of using the super long password that the NES cart was notorious for.
I really encourage you to give this game a whirl and you may be surprised how well the gameplay holds up even today, platforming is pretty easy here and plenty of enemies to blast on your way up. I'm glad I picked this one up and played all the way through, maybe you will too!

i got this game for free as part of a promotion for pre-ordering Kid Icarus Uprising. I'm ashamed to say I haven't even played it yet though...one day I will, one day.

on a related note though...the 3D classics series is great. Don't know why they've stopped releasing games for it. Donkey Kong (in the same style as Urban Champion) would be awesome. or how about a 3D classics Punch Out?? Or Rad Racer. C'mon guys!

Damn fine game, always been one of my all time favourites. What I would like to have seen with this, and other 3D classics, is maybe slightly better optimization to the 3DS. Example, compare Excitebike and Urban Champion 3D classics to Kid Icarus, or Kirby's adventure. Why do only some get reformatted to widescreen? I can see with Kid Icarus how that could possibly gum up the vertical climb levels, but the sidescrolling ones would be fine. Kirby's got no excuse, though. Doesn't make them any less great, I'm just being a fussy nerd!
