I'm relatively new to the neo geo world. A couple months ago I found a japanese aes system and jumped at the chance to pick it up. The system included one of the arcade stick controllers, so in order to play two player games, my next neo geo purchase will be a second controller. I've noticed on ebay there are a couple different options for controllers. Any advice on which style controllers to consider would be greatly appreciated. I'm mostly interested in shoot em up type games if some controller types are better suited for certain genres. Also, what are reasonable price ranges for each style controller. Thanks!

You can always make a custom stick, but one of my favorite old school aftermarket ones is the Hori Fighting Stick Neo II. Decent joystick and buttons has rapid fire mode selectable for all buttons. Which is perfect for shooters, metal slug etc..

I really like the Hori stick. It's made out of metal so it feels really solid. I bought one a month ago and right away it became my stick of choice.

if you're into pads, there is also a decent one from snk that was made for the CD system, it has micro switches and (for a pad) feels quite good. You might want to check that out. And as SSS said, you can easily build your own controller out of arcade components, as the Neo Geo does not use any encoding PCB (like modern consoles do) - just wire it up correctly and it'll work. check out slagcoin if you want loads of tips on how to pick parts and get started on a design/button layout. Here's the pinout for the controls btw.

The old style stick controller is probably the hardest one to find these days.

It isn't easy but not hard either, you have to remove some plastic(old joystick tray and a post or half a post) then you need to drill the metal to make holes for mounting the stick. That's it. For the buttons, you can either remove the PCB entirely and just jumper all the connections if you want to keep the auto fire or you can drill the solder holes on the PCB bigger so that the tabs on the buttons can fit inside, then just solder them in. Tricky part about that is aligning the tabs with the holes on the PCB. Just takes time.

But so well worth it. I regret selling that stick. I have to make another one.

I usually get them from http://www.akihabarashop.jp/

For the stick I get the Sanwa JLF-TP-8YT-SK and any 30mm buttons needed.

24mm on the original and type 2 SNK sticks? Will that same octogate fit straight into either SNK sticks?

Ive got a SUZO octogate here i would love to put in an SNK stick, but it wont fit due to the fat collar, i dont really want to ream it all that much ;)

On the OSS and Kidney, yes 24mm buttons. As for the octogate, only on the JLF stick.

You can probably make some kind of template in photoshop and print it on sticker paper and just apply it before drilling to everything lines up.

In terms of modding existing sticks, the dreamcast arcade stick is also a nice basis for making a custom stick. Heavy by design, a lot of space and not too much work to be done if you want sanwa/seimitsu parts. Has a 6 button layout though, may be better suited for a multiplatform stick rather than making it Neo exclusive.

The Neo Hori requires cutting and drilling to fit a JLF in it. Just like the AES stick where you have to trim the plastic.
