Has anyone ever bought a VGA graded item?

Someone is buying this stuff, because i was trying to grab a decent copy of Zelda - Oracle of the Ages. I saw a VGA graded one with over a dozen bids. Already over $150.

If you want to see sad check out the sealed game collectors forum or the VGA grading thread at Nintendo Age. NES has been hit hard by VGA shit and it's interesting to me how it's more embraced over there but it's really looked down upon and generally despised over at PCEFX and here.
I sold a sealed Chaotix on ebay a while back and I really wish I just sold it on a forum. I started it at $1 but it ended up going to a reseller who sold VGA stuff.

Considering how inflated game prices have gotten this isn't shocking. If you are tempted to sell your collection now is the time. Games are super overpriced lately. The balloon will burst eventually, and we will reap the sweet benefits.

That's what I'm waiting for, then I'll scoop the last of what I'm after :D

Sealed games are like sealed comics but worse.

It's a market strictly for collectors. I get that some of the boxes are very artful, but these are not one of a kind items so the pricing I've seen tends to be ridiculous.

I get keeping a box, but for fucks sake to not use something as intended just seems odd to me.

I went to a concourse event in the summer and saw some beautiful examples of classic cars. I asked an owner of a classic Ferrari how often he drives it and he looked at me like I was insane and said "maybe once a year". I then returned the look

Exactly. I understand not wanting to damage the car, but it needs to be enjoyed. Unless it's a one of a kind in a museum.

Yea, I still go back to my "It's what I have that you do not" mentality, just silly if you ask me.

When the VGA graded stuff first started popping up I figured since it's a scam, people will see through it and they won't last long because they wouldn't sell. Sadly, I was clearly wrong. I still say video games are meant to be played, not only sealed up forever on a shelf.

I wonder about the people that are actually buying these things; are they mostly older collectors with more money than time to play these games? Or are they younger spoiled rich kids just getting into the hobby that naive enough to think VGA-graded actually means something? Either way, it's pathetic.

I'd just buy loose carts to play, with none of that MIB or CIB overpriced VGA shit.

I have used their company AFA toygrader for action figures but I dont think I would use the VGA service as grading video games doesnt make much sense.

Brianstoys catalog use to have tons of VGA games in it.

Why does it make sense to get a Yak Face graded and not a sealed video game?

Both were made to be played with.

Can you imagine what Shawn or 8-Man's Neo collection would be worth if they got them graded?

Back to the thread title, I have bought one VGA graded item. It was a sealed copy of Boxxle 2 for Game Boy. It was graded as an 85, which is ironic because that was what I paid for it: $85.

The first thing I thought was: How the hell am I going to get it out of this shell without ruining it? For those that have never seen one up close, they are sealed in an extremely hard plastic shell. I assume this is so that the game (or, as I like to refer to it, your brick) cannot be damaged without excessive force.

Long story short, my brother was able to get it out by hitting one of the corners with a hammer and then sawing the rest of it. Pulled it out...no damage and it sits in a box protector on my shelf. I left the game sealed and was able, rather easily, to find a loose copy.

My opinion on VGA itself is very similar to a lot of yours. I think in probably ten years, the majority of decent/semi-rare games will be ridiculously overpriced...very similar to what happened with comic books. Just, for some reason, it seems to be happening much quicker for video games.

What I don't get is how people pay so much for VGA games when they could buy a mint sealed copy for probably much less and have it graded themselves.

Toys are mainly for kids to play whilst videogames are for all ages.

I can look at yak face in his see through bubble on his backing card and enjoy looking at it, just like people who buy paintings or ornaments as its no different being encased in acrylic or not as the view is the same but the acrylic protects it and the grading service authenticates it.
But with a videogame thats sealed in a box, you cant even see the videogame or read the manual , you might as well just stick an empty box in a case.

I've discovered new joy in finding $1000+ "VGA" games on eBay and submitting $50 offers on them.
