Tomorrow I should meet a guy with an eprom reader, and try to dump the bios.
Neither me nor the other guy have ever done anything like that before, so any advice on how to dump it correctly will be appreciated.

If the bios turns out to be something of interest or yet unreleased, I'll send it to the MAME team and then upload it somewhere.

In the meanwhile, here a picture of the sticker that's on the side of the board and the board itself (I gave it a brief look, and seems like a normal MV1A)

Depending the the software/hardware he has to dump it... all you need to do is select the right eprom, read eprom, you may want to compare the checksum on the device and image, then save. All these options will be built into any programming software.

How do you plan to verify that?
My advice, after having the file dumped, try a diff with known BIOSes, or run a md5sum, as file size could be misleading or menu could be triggered under special conditions (DIP , game etc..)

Strings command will get you the text inside btw.
Anyway, Raz is the only one who can dig the binary and say it for sure.

Again, 対戦用基板, "competition use main board", seems a dedicated one. (tnx for the clear pic of the sticker!).

OK.

Mistery solved, reading this '08 post:

http://blogs.yahoo.co.jp/psyema/54874651.html

it is a BIOS that enables "start" from player 2, after he/her putted a coin from the second cab, in a typical VS setup for just 2 players.

This means that only one board is used, but with a A/V and 2P controls sent to the second cab (probably trough custom harness)

He wrote that many later games will not work anyway, so it is probably an old BIOS…looking at the game list, we should understand the year, but seems ~95.

Not a 4P BIOS, but still a nice thing that describes how the neo adapted trough time.

So... A BIOS that can play 2P through two cabs using only one MVS board and cart? Weird...

Woah, that's pretty ridiculous. Would the 4 players be playing together? What games could work with a setup like that? Just Kizuna?

Ya, just kizuna. We hoped for Neo Bomberman but it just doesn't work unless the special bios is need for that as well.

You can hook up two cabs in 2P Vs, each with a single joystick, using any single board (neo, cps etc..), just need a custom harness.
This is standard for 2P vs setup, where each opponent has his hown screen and cp, no big deal.

The issue the "competition" BIOS (not the 4p one) address, is that if you seat on 2p cab and insert a single credit, you need to push start on 1p control panel to play.
With the competition BIOS, you can insert a coin and start from the 2P side as well, that's it.

Bumping with another mystery.

Anyone know what this SNK 4-Player linking cable could have been used for (dated 1999)?

Awesome thread dudes, it has been years since I've owned a Neo (sadly) but glad to see people still going at it with projects for the community.

Looks like the other half of the 4-player PCB that Neo Turf Masta was remaking. Going by the inputs on this little PCB with a JAMMA edge, looks like it's supposed to go into a second cabinet, connected to it's JAMMA harness, which is then also connected to the 4-Player PCB in the host cabinet with the MVS board.

Very nice find there I say, I can imagine Neo Turf Masta will find it interesting.

By the look of the connectors it's possible it's for the Hyper 64. Unless it's for linking a candy cab to a regular Jamma cab.

XX, didn't you see the "3P_IN" and "4P_IN" silkscreening? Seems more like it's part of the 4-Player adapter.

... Unless the Hyper 64 was capable of 4 Players.

The driving board was.

The 4 player adaptor with the sub PCB is pretty straight forward since it has 2 jamma outputs, 2 players per cab.

I'm pretty confident this isn't neo geo related. In 1999, SNK put their name on Midway gun game called Invasion in Japan. It's been a long time since I looked at those cabs, but its my best guess if they made a 4 player version.

EDIT:
EBAY
It may have been a good guess, looks like the motherboard supports player 3 and 4. If you zoom in at the bottom of the pcb.

Dang, that's disappointing.

Is the MVS 4-Player hardware thus far pretty much complete though?

Thanks for the info, that could explain it. There was another lightgun game SNK made in 1999 called "Beast Busters: Second Nightmare" although KLOV says it was on the Hyper 64 motherboard.
