Bayou Billy is such a shit game.

This post fails. It's an awesome beat em up/driving/gun game in one. The beat em up part was pretty terrible, but the other parts were pretty cool.

I could never beat the last boss though - too hard.

Ninja Gaiden 1-3

Wrath of the Black Manta was really hard too.

Nah, it was really easy. Any time you were low on power you could just keep entering the same door with three static ninjas and refilling your bar by three energy blocks. The only challenging parts were flying on the kit and knocking down everyone with charged up blasts and figuring out the pattern on the last boss. I loved this game.

Metal Storm was an actual challenge after Level 3. Can't believe how much it has shot up in price.

We've gone from "obscure" passed "well-known" and are into "shit even non-gamers know"-territory.

I don't know if it meets the "obscure" criteria, but it's definitely a fun and challenging game. It's like Moon Patrol meets Megaman. I could never beat it as a teenager, and I went back in my 30's and took that bitch down.

Now, somebody needs to recommend Super Mario Bros 3 and this thread will be complete.

Still can't believe I'm the only one who suggested Cobra Triangle. I still need to get a replacement copy of it. My brother and I would curse that game day and night trying to save all of the swimmers. Controls took some getting used too. But I think if I played it again, I could finish it.

Kabuki Quantum Fighter is quite badass
I second this, it's an excellent and challenging platformer. It has really cool style and strider meets Mega Man gameplay. Also has excellent music. Too bad there wasn't a sequel to it like the end credits promised.

Destiny of an Emperor - It's easily my fav RPG on NES but not too many people know about it.

I just recently picked up Power Blade and I haven't played it much, but it seems promising. Imagine Mega Man gameplay with a boomerang throwing commando.

Used to 1CC this one as a kid. One of my faves, right up there with the Guardian Legend.

SECTION Z

As long as you power up correctly and learn the right path to take, this game isn't quite as impossible as some people claim it is.

One of my faves, right up there with the Guardian Legend.

Which reminds me of another shooter that I never knew was developed by the same company:

Formula One: Built to Win, from Seta... not widely known, but... one of the very best among the best!

Dick Tracy was hard as fuck, but you literally can't beat playing Dick Tracy. It was like a sandbox game of the 8bit generation with missions, fetch quests, car chases and I think there may have been an escort mission in there somewhere.

I'm glad Guardian Legend and Kiwi Kraze got mentioned, those are both great games to go back to. It might not qualify as obscure, but StarTropics was always one of my favorite adventure games on the NES.

Startropics. I still can't beat that game. I remember thinking, years after first playing it, that "I should totally be able to beat this now, it's not like I'm a kid anymore." but I didn't take into account that I seemed to have infinite patience when I was a kid when it came to games.
I'll beat you one of these days Startropics...one of these days...

When were you a kid? When this game was released I didn't know anyone else who owned it, and there was no such thing as a strategy guide or internet for it. The magazines covered it eventually, but I remember quite a few of the areas being downright insane.

Goddamn I still can't beat that wonderful game. I've playing it off and since I was like 7 years old. Much like you, I too thought with age came wisdom. Still not enough to defeat Star Tropics for Nintendo...
