In Tangshan, a large industrial, coastal city 125 miles east of Beijing, people can tell which way the wind is blowing by what color the smog is. Grayish color smog comes from iron deposits blown from steel mills to the south; whitish smog comes from chemical factories to the east; and black dust comes from the coal and coking plant to the west. Tangshan itself is home to many dirty factories and plants such as Beijing Coking-Chemical Plant and Capital Iron and Steel, both of which were relocated to Tangshan from Beijing to reduce pollution there.

Maybe he's been hired to test the air quality, when the pollution is getting s low that he drops to the ground, they need to shut things down for a little before it drops another 6 inches. Like a giant canary.

A couple of my friends moved to China two years ago. She's an architect over there, and her boyfriend is playing entrepreneur/business man. I say playing, because he went over there with no job, but is the type of person who can definitely make things happen. The two of them are loving it there. They don't make a lot of money, even with the both of them working, by our standards, but it is enough over there to live a very comfortable life. Just make sure you tuck away a little bit of cash for if/when the time comes that you want to bail and move back to the US or Europe. Other than that, you'll probably have an absolute ball and live like the white devil you are.
