Who here eats "poor foods" aka Spam, Vienna sausage, deviled meat/potted meat and the like?

I don't mean "due to your current financial situation". I mean you were raised on the stuff when you were a kid and even though you can buy other things you stock it in your pantry.

I, myself eat spam, vienna sausage (Libby's only), pork and beans, and saimin (ramen to some).

I eat it from time to time as does my family as well.

Around here, Spam is fairly expensive relative to "real" meat. Maybe in Hawaii it's the other way around, because Spam is cheaper to transport to the middle of the Pacific than unprocessed meat. That said, I do enjoy the stuff -- the saltiness really goes well with white rice, and it's delicious when sliced thin and fried crispy.

I enjoy "poor food" in moderation. It's undeniably tasty, but it's generally unhealthy.

Wow you just listed everything (minus liverwurst and canned sardines) that can be found in the cupboards of any traditional filipino home :lolz:

You are so flip and Hawaiian at the same time.... but yeah I like that stuff too.

Cous Cous is good, but the only supermarkets I've found it in are at "fancier" Vons/Ralphs and Whole Foods markets. Sometimes Henry's, Trader Joes or Sprouts has it.

I eat Spicy Spam w/ fried rice and enjoy Shin Ramyun w/ Kimchi. Whenever I want to eat cereal I get the 'off brand' cereals. 'Chocolate Rice Crisps' are about the same was 'Cocoa Crispies' etc.. Poor/Cheap food FTW.

Fried spam is awesome with eggs or on a sandwich. I can't eat it anymore cause it's too salty. We still eat pork and beans... the MRS loves it and grew up on it. I don't care that much for it - never had it until we got together about 4 years ago.

Ramen all the time, only reason I try to stay away from it is the sodium in it. Spaghetti-O's with franks in them, Corned Beef, all sorts of cheap canned food, bring back memories of my childhood.

Growing up our "poor foods" were pig's ears, pig's feet, chuck steak and tripe. We still eat them once in a while.

Funny how this this thread brought out a bunch of Filipino forum members. As someone who's part Filipino, I don't know what that says about us as a culture.

But yeah, a lot of the staples of Filipino cuisine have the hallmarks of "poor food" -- cheap, calorie-dense, long non-refrigerated shelf life.

Never liked Spam. Even when they came out with the Spam w/cheese and I was a fat tub of shit willing to try anything, I couldn't bring myself to like it. Never liked potted meat. I had vienna sausages when I was a kid and remember liking them, but they tasted awful when I tried them as an adult. I've had more than my fair share of ramen noodles, though. It's like 10 cents a pack and there have been plenty of times that was the only thing to get me through the week.

Leave it to a Hawaiian to make a thread about spam.

Ramen...but that's it from your list. We do things like not buying hotdog buns when you can get 80 corn tortillas for $2.50. Stuff like that, lol. The only reason we eat this stuff is because we're not financially well off. If I had the money, We'd be eating top notch sh** all month.

growing up not so much, but I do eat Mac n Cheese and plain pasta once in a while. I usually load my mac n cheese with seasonings and real cheese.

Never tried spam or any canned meets. I'm ok with never trying them either

bologna is about as poor as I got, and I haven't eaten that in years.
I still do ramen, but i dunno if that counts. It's cheap...but is it poor food?...

Good, the both of you can be in my play of Auschwitz - you two can be the buff Jews that take over the camp and march to freedom.

Fuck yeah it's poor food. My aunt had a bologna drawer in her fridge - raising 5 boys plus me. I'd ride my bike over to make some sandwiches almost daily in the summer.

Pipe bombs are the best.

Yeah, I eat poor food all the time. Once my kitchen's unpacked and cleaned more I'll be cooking vegetables and stuff again, but for now ramen, pasta and rice are the three food groups of my diet. Besides, I grew up on bologna sandwiches and pasta with canned tomato sauce. Don't even get me started on chips and cheese/nachos. I still eat it whenever I can, I love it that much.

Fun exercise: go to the fancy cheeses section, pick up whatever looks good, and then load the rest of your cart with ramen. The expression on the checkout girl's face was priceless.

I enjoy fried Spam from time to time. I'm also quite fond of those .78 cent teriyaki beef flavored Chow Mein meals from Wal-Mart.

Growing up, my grandmother always had cans of Vienna "Sausages" in the pantry. I used to eat them, and thought they were pretty good. Now, not so much.

I did have some Spam a few years back. They released a bacon flavored variety, and it was awesome heated up in a pan. Now, I try to avoid that stuff. The salt content is usually through the roof, not to mention I don't want to think of where it came from..

Cheap macaroni and cheese is always a good choice though.
