been on an old NES kick lately

particularly games that present a challenge

i'm fairly well-versed in the mainstream NES library but don't know too much about its hidden gems

i want a challenge but not something stupidly hard like that Silver Surfer game (which i tried and is stupidly difficult)

Solstice is pretty good if you get used to the weird perspective. Good music too.

Fire and Ice is awesome. I like Kid Cubicle too. Battle Kid is amazing if you don't have it?

Bayou Billy is such a shit game.

I actually owned the handheld Tiger Electronics version when I was in the 2nd grade.

EDIT - Holy shit, I found a picture of it

Snake Rattle and Roll?

Bayou Billy?

Great choices, I've been trying to legitimately beat both of them since I was a kid, to no avail.

Whomp Em is a great lesser known game. It plays kinda like Zelda II.

Toobin' is a lot of fun too, good tunes and challenging stages.

I think you'd like Wrath of the Black Manta, Joe. It's a real solid game.

On a recommendation I picked up Conquest of the Crystal Palace earlier in the year. I had never played it, so there is no nostalgia to bias me, but it was fun as hell and charming. I still haven't beaten it. I'd suggest googling it to see if it would interest you.

flying warriors! this game destroyed me as a kid, but I picked it up recently and it's really not that bad, a few anger inducing moments but otherwise smooth sailing to the end. Definitely one of the most unique games on the NES IMO, RPG, beat em up, fighter, platformer... it's got a bit of everything, but if you do play be sure to play on "expert mode" or all the boss fights will be far too easy.

Man, I hated Legacy of the Wizard!
Could never figure it out, but I didn't dedicate the time to it.

Same here --but they advertised the heck out of it when I was a kid.

Pinball Quest is fun, though.

I'm not sure if it's that obscure, but MC Kids is a really fun and challenging game if you haven't played it. Especially if you're trying to get all of the cards.
