am I the only one who wishes steven segal was in this one? he was the best part of machete to me, great as a villian :)

Hell yeah, he was.

He even died like a fucking badass.

Then he went to UFC and taught Lyoto Machida and Anderson Silva how to kick people and knock them out.

Terrible writing. The action was really boring. It was pretentious. There was no real adrenaline rush, build up, or tension. It was simply a poorly written, poorly directed, and poorly produced hack job.

That's what I thought when I watched it. A nice, middle of the road action movie.

Some folks may have expected more because of the talent involved perhaps?

It was like, ok guys, Stallone's rounding up a cast (mostly) made of S-class action movie heroes, this thing's going to be over the top, it's going to be the action movie to end all action movies. It's gonna be a love letter to 80s action flicks.

And it was none of that. It was just meh.

I think it's more like this: having watched a lot of the Statham movies, the Jet Li movies, even action tv shows like Spartacus, I have an expectation for the production to be adequate. Crank isn't superior writing. The Transporter was goofy as well. War with Jet Li and Statham was actually pretty weak. But all of those look like masterpieces compared to Expendables.

If someone wants to make an action movie, it needs to be made to a certain standard: the stand of not sucking.

This is the best review of The Expendables ever written. It's 100% factual and true, and it's about all the thought and consideration the movie deserves.

with Van Damme in it , it should be TWICE as good as the first mediocre one.

REALLY looking forward to this.

I loved the first one and I'm happy that movies like this are still made every now and then.

I still hope for more rambo movies and for Schwarzenegger to get back into shape and make some more movies.

For people who love action movies like this: also watch undisputed III. I never heard about it before, but was I in for a treat...

You dont need a great script when you got all these cool dudes in it, first one was just a bit of fun and I enjoyed it.

The only really over the top scene in the first movie is when the AA-12 is deployed with maximum prejudice to save the day and blow some sorry ass soldiers away in true 80's style action where any shot knocks the badguy down or sends him flying backwards.

Other than that I agree with Wasabi and Lonestage.

Although, Crank was a great movie because it's premise was so absurd. It's an action flick in which the plot revolves around one man needing to be in as many action sequences as possible in order for him to not die. The more danger he is in the longer he will live. Fantastic.

as great as the first Crank was, the sequel was even better! at least in terms of sheer ridiculousness.

i basically enjoyed the first Expendables and am excited for the new one. the only thing i wish the first one had more of was that 80's over the top cheese-factor and/or more action and violence. Stallone directed "Rambo(4)" and couldn't even make Expendables 1 equally as gory? i just hope the second movie gets it just a little bit better (even if its not directed by Sly this time).

Best part about the first one was Terry Crews killing all those soliders with an AA-12 shotgun in a corridor and while killing them, yelling: "REMEMBER THIS SHIT AT CHIRSTMAS!" that said, yeah... part 1 is kinda lame. From the teaser this looks like it might be back on track. But I agree, Carl Weathers, Segal, Michael Dudikof, AND Chow Yun Fat as Inspector Tequila Yuen from Hard-Boiled should be in this too. I mean why not? Hell "the ghost of Steve James" should be in this.

CYF is in this? Man, I can totally close my eyes and hear the theme song for A Better Tomorrow.

No HE SHOULD be in the movie. I've never understood how Jet Li became huge here and CYF didn't. He was an International Action Star, came to Hollywood and it just fizzled. Inspector Yuen would be an asset to the ensemble group of Mercs IMO.

I think that a lot probably has to do with the fact that American and Chinese concepts of attractiveness differ. CYF wasn't considered handsome, while Jet Li was. However, Jackie Chan is universally unattractive, but his quirky comedic style compensated.

It makes me sad to think about it, but I could just imagine being in a theatre showing the movie and a bunch of idiots yelling "Hey, is that Jackie Chan?!". Apparently, the six months of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is the best movie EVAR!" crap didn't convince too many Americans to seek-out classics like Hard Boiled and A Better Tomorrow. Hell, watch The Corruptor if that's your fancy, but everyone here knows that more people are gonna remember American Ninja than John Woo films.

If Arnold is not back into shape when they start shooting his scenes I could imagine Stallone giving him shit to no end. The rivalry between these two on and off the screen has been going on for decades.
