South Park RPG? Yes — Matt Stone & Trey Parker to collaborate with THQ, Obsidian on new game
December 1, 2011 | Stefanie FogelAdd a Comment

The foul-mouthed residents of South Park are coming soon to the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in a new role-playing game from publisher THQ and developer Obsidian Entertainment.

Game Informer broke the news earlier today when it revealed South Park: The Game as the cover of its January issue. THQ and Obsidian will collaborate with South Park Digital Studios on the project. Series creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone will oversee development of the game, as well as write the script and perform the dialogue.

As the new kid in South Park, it’ll be up to the player to make friends and defend the town from a wide range of threats, according to Game Informer. THQ describes the game as an “epic role-playing adventure” that will allow the player to explore the Colorado town like never before.

“Our goal is simple: to put creative talent first,” said Danny Bilson, EVP Core Games, THQ. “Matt and Trey are arguably two of the most important comedic talents of their generation. Bringing their vision of South Park to the interactive space is a dream-come-true.”

South Park: The Game is scheduled to be released in the second half of calendar 2012.

Color me interested.

The villain better be the CoS. Or Tom Cruise at the very least.

Surprisingly, I had a lot of fun with the South Park Let's Go Tower Defense game. Hopefully this will surprise me, too.

So, by "role-playing" do they mean something along the lines of Grand Theft Auto or Shenmue, where the player character runs around the town and, at will, decides which goals he wants to achieve?--My first thought was that this game would attempt to be like a Japanese RPG, but it doesn't sound like they're going that route, and instead aiming for a "Walk around the world of your favourite South Park characters!" gimmick.

The best South Park game was Chef's Luv Shack. Not for adults, but for a fifth grader. Me and my friends would play that any chance we had, it would bring us to tears. And the minigames in-between rounds were great fun, too.

This game would more awesome if it were 2D. I'd love to see detailed South Park RPG pixel art, but yeah, that probably won't be happening anytime soon.

Seriously. The only thing Obsidian is competent in is story writing and they're not even writing the story for this; They're only writing the buggy code.

I read somewhere that it will be in 2D and look just like the show.
Hope there's a dungeon section involving Lemmiwinks and Mr Slave's ass. lol!

Probably more in line with Fallout 3 & Fallout: New Vegas or possibly Oblivion style

Says the guy with the Nights avatar.

I'm referring to ten years ago when South Park was still original, at the height of it's popularity, and I still cared. Now, to me at least, it has become just like The Simpsons and Family Guy. It was funny when it first came out and was fresh for the first few seasons, but it's been going on so long now, I just don't care anymore and have no interest anymore. But that's just me...

10 years of brilliant satire in South Park is pushing it... by about 8 years, or so?

It'll be some hilariously shitty turn-based Dragon Quest knock-off, no doubt. I doubt they're going to make anything out of this.

Also, I always thought the show was pretty obnoxious, only thriving on current affairs. Sort of like The Boondocks, only this has managed to keep up the pace for far longer.

If you guys really think it's that good now, I'm willing to give it another shot. I'll add it to my DVR list now.
