I didn't have the visceral disgust watching this video that several of you did and I am sure that says something negative about me in general, but I know if I was in that crowd there is no way I could just walk by the small child without at least grabbing someone else to make the phone call to the paramedics while I shielded the kid from further damage so I guess I have more of a soul than those people.

And those 90's videos were labeled Faces of Death and I recall them being more of a mid 80's thing. At least that is when I first saw them in the video stores. I only saw one of them and I was about 11 at the time. Whether they were staged or real the fact that they were portrayed as real made it pretty revolting. My sister wanted to see it and my father was fine with it so the night before I hopped a plane to head back to my mother's house we watched the one that had a jet liner crash into a shitty apartment complex in like Brazil or something. Nothing like getting onto a plane alone as a kid the morning after seeing shit like a baby doll head with a child's ripped off hand still clutching it in the middle of the street surrounded by luggage, bloody shoes, plane parts and rubble. Great parenting pops... Maybe that explains my lack of reaction to this video today.

Okay, I refuse to watch this horse shit... but can someone tell me why they ran her over? I mean, what in the fuck? How do two cars run over a girl? What scenario does this take place in? No, don't tell me to just watch the video. I simply can't do it based on the comments here.

Maybe I've become far too cynical & desensitized, but that didn't disturb me and didn't surprise me in the least. Most people are shitty people in general and something even like this doesn't shock me these days. Idk what's worse that I think like this or something like this comes along and proves that point.

I didn't feel sick to my stomach because people stepped over a dying child, I felt sick watching a child suffer through being slowly run over four times. The way the child reached up her arms to touch her face after being run over by the second vehicle was absolutely sickening, mainly because it's a gesture I've seen my own child make when he is tired or upset. Goddamn, I wished I hadn't seen that.

EDIT: the video is clear and crisp. It is shot from a slight overhead angle, but is close enough to the event that everything visible (probably a cctv type deal). it takes place in what looks like a fairly crowded chinese street, possibly street market type dealio. The child is wandering alone up the alley when she is struck by the first vehicle (it's moving slowly). The driver pauses while the child is between wheels, and then slowly resumes, crushing the child's waist a second time. The child is somewhat conscious and still moving while a small pool of blood begins to form.

Several people walk past, or over the child at this point.

A second vehicle than slowly runs the child over, crushing her midsection and legs. This is the point I turned the video off.

Ido not care what type of excuse they use, that is just cold and sad. It is a child for sake and I feel those that walked by are just as bad as the drivers themselves.

I'm glad you stopped there. the part that made me sick was later when a lady finally grabbed her and tried to sit her up - she just fell over... fucking horrible movie to be on youtube.

I cried after the shock passed...I wish I could un-see this video. I looked at my six month old asleep in the crib and thought about all the danger he is going to face growing up. I have been and will continue to do everything I possibly can to see that he grows into a kind, compassionate, and wise person, but videos like this make me very afraid for the future.

Found that link, lithy.

msnbc said:
TRIPOLI – Even from a remote perch in Libya, we heard about the horrific story making waves in China.
Last Thursday, a two-year-old girl crossing a street by herself in the city of Foshan in China’s southern Guangdong Province was hit by a car. The driver paused briefly as the girl lay between the front and rear wheels and then tore off, thumping her now-limp body again.
Soon after, a second vehicle rolled over the girl, with the driver presumably unaware that a body lay on the road. The second driver also did not stop.
As if both these acts were not outrageous enough, 18 more people – on foot, on motorbikes, or on bicycles – passed by the girl, lying inert on the ground, and did nothing. Even a mother with her own child ignored the victim.
(Warning the video is very graphic, but it can seen here from a Chinese broadcast or here from the BBC).
It wasn’t until a female trash collector saw her and proceeded to pick the girl up that she was moved to the side of the road. The trash collector asked passers-by who the girl belonged to, and eventually the mother appeared, distraught, to claim her daughter named Yueyue.
All of this was caught on surveillance cameras. A clip was posted on China’s popular micro blog, Sina Weibo on Sunday, generating a huge outcry as netizens counted the number of people who glanced at the girl and ignored her plight – all in the seven minutes she lay on the road until the Good Samaritan carried her to safety.
The story, which has been a leading headline on all of China’s news sites, touched a nerve in the country, with many decrying the lack of moral standards and general disregard for fellow human beings.
One report quoted the first driver as saying, “If she is dead, I may pay only about 20,000 yuan ($3,125). But if she is injured, it may cost me hundreds of thousands yuan."
Some news reports and online discussions made the point that civil behavior is not always rewarded in China. Many people fear they’re being subject to some sort of scam while others remember still a well-known case from 2006, when a man helped a woman who had fallen only to have her accuse him of causing the injury to begin with. She filed a suit against him, in which the judge ruled the man wouldn’t have come to her aid had he not caused the fall.

State-run news agency Xinhua has reported both drivers of the vehicles that ran over the girl have been apprehended by police.
Yueyue, meanwhile, is in critical condition with serious brain injuries, breathing with the help of a ventilator. Her parents are asking eyewitnesses to come forward with any additional information.
The story of Yueyue’s hit-and-run stands in stark contrast to another story that picked up steam online over the weekend.
Last Friday afternoon, a woman fell into a scenic tourist lake in Hangzhou, the capital of the eastern province of Zhejiang. A Western woman who was walking by saw the Chinese woman struggling and quickly jumped into West Lake to save her.
After swimming back to shore, the foreigner dragged her onto the bank. The victim remained conscious and appeared out of danger. Police turned up ten minutes later, and the Western woman left quietly. Several websites reported she was American.
What was notable in this instance was the response of those who read the story online.
In addition to giving the rescuer high praise (“That American girl is great, she has a beautiful character”), people also made unfavorable comparisons to Chinese behavior:
“According to Chinese laws and regulations, if she hadn’t pushed the girl into the water, why ever would she save her?”
Thanks to China Digital Times for the translations.

This was the worst part to me: "One report quoted the first driver as saying, “If she is dead, I may pay only about 20,000 yuan ($3,125). But if she is injured, it may cost me hundreds of thousands yuan."

disgusting.

God damn it, reading all of this makes me so very very upset. I want to personally kick the shit out of everyone that just walked by, not to mention the stupid faggots that ran her over. Fuck.

I'm sitting here reading these comments and I'm straddling the thoughts of "watch it" and "walk away". I think it's best if I walked away from this one though...

Same here. These kind of videos stay stuck in my memory forever.

Reading the comments is plenty enough. I don't think I'll watch the video.

Many people fear they’re being subject to some sort of scam while others remember still a well-known case from 2006, when a man helped a woman who had fallen only to have her accuse him of causing the injury to begin with. That one judge alone polluted the psyche of over a billion people. Probably the most deserving to be lynched first.

disgusting.

This is why I hate it when people just blurt out random internet rumors like they're real without seeing a bona fide source. It's idiotic.

Case in point: liquidsnake. I bet his source was a YouTube comment, the modern day equivalent of an email forward.

You can't blame the people walking by. You have to put yourselves in their situation (read my previous post).
I'm hoping this video at least helps change that law.

I can't help but cry as I turn to look at my baby girl sleeping in her crib after watching that. That girl didn't deserve that at all. WHERE THE FUCK WERE THE PARENTS when all this was going on?

This is one of my biggest fears now that my baby is now 11 months and starting to walk.

That video sickened me to my core...I too wish I could un-watch it. I don't know why but slow violence like that is worse to me. Had that been a video of someone being destroyed on a highway by fast moving vehicles, it may not have bothered me so much. The fact that it takes so long to happen and could have been so easily prevented kills me...

I too have a 3 year old daughter and looking at that video made me think of her...fucking terrible...

On a side note,

Aren't baby girls kind of looked down on in China? I thought that with the ability to only have one child, many families don't even want a girl because of the whole namesake thing...

they are yes, but i know that after years of having the only child rule going on there, and a hatred for girls, there's become a huge population of chinese bachelors. dudes with no wives and no one to marry. so i guess they're reaping what they sowed in that sense.

I'm not going to watch the video, but I think you guys should read this. Saw it on reddit.
The Peng Yu effect.

That's an interesting point. I bet a lot of people would be unwilling to risk their own future and that of their families by helping, but the Peng Yu effect doesn't explain two things:

First, even if you thought helping might fuck you and your family over, wouldn't you at least express some concern? Why not phone the police or an ambulance or something? Surely you can't get sued for calling for help.

Second, the law that creates the Peng Yu effect is fucked. I know China isn't a democracy, but I can't help but think if more people complained about it, it could be changed. How hard could it be to rally people with a video like that as an example? Unless the Chinese really are a bunch of heartless fucks like the video implies.
