Super Metroid
Shadowgate
Radiant Silvergun
Castlevania SotN
Zelda LttP

Awesome list, Magician!

Fatal Fury Special
Super Metroid
Zelda: LTTP
Super Castlevania IV
Resident Evil 4

Another great list from Wes.

Here are mine, based primarily on their attach rate. These are the games that I either keep going back to or reside in my consciousness because of the bond I formed with them.

1.) Resident Evil (PSX)-first game. Showed me how a game could engage undesirable emotions (fear, tension, anxiety) on a level I'd never experienced before. Games became more than just 'games' for me on that day.

2.) Devil May Cry 4 (PS3)-I love the whole series (except for the second game) but the 4th game really connected with me. I was recovering from eye surgery so I had nothing to do but play this game. It was amazing, learning all the depth and challenge of running up the style meter. A vastly underrated game despite the sales and exposure-people that cased on this just didn't get into its sublime combat. And DMC 4 is the ultimate expression of Dante, firmly tied with Terry Bogard for my fave video game character of all time.

3.) Fallout 3-the finest video game of this console generation, IMO.

4.) Legend of Zelda-the whole series is magnificent, except for the CDI games, but I have to go with Majora's Mask. All the puzzle elements, platforming, combat challenges of Ocarina of Time combined with a very dark and disturbing story about the end of the world. It wasn't a retread of the same old story: Link was doing something new and different and I was really into it. I loved the masks and adopting different racial abilities as needed. I think Majora's Mask is the best Zelda game in terms of exposing the player to the aesthetics of LInk's universe.

5.) Metal Gear Solid-Metal Gear Solid for the PSX, the first one, is the greatest video game ever made. Relative to its hardware, it is an unbelievable achievement. There are games coming out TODAY that can't touch this one. I enjoy the entire series, but the first one is a masterpiece. On a technical level, level design, gameplay mechanics, complexity of story, boss fights, etc....there is no game higher. It's not my personal favorite game of all time, but I acknowledge its magnificence all the same.

Honorables (yes, I'm doing it)

Final Fantasy Series-there are some clunkiers in there, but with a 20+ year history of constant releases, there are bound to be some bad and middling entries. But most of them have been fun to play.

Gears of War series-the only squad based action shooter I've ever liked in multi (co-op only.) Great world building and gameplay.

Street Fighter 2 series-obvious reasons

Fatal Fury series-a wonderful series that was clearly a labor of love. Every entry is filled with SNK dev goodness.

Ninja Gaiden series-especially the NES entries, but I like the current gen offerings a lot for their intense and difficult action.

Nice call on Destiny of an Emperor, it's not in my top 5 but high on my list and maybe top 10. I liked classic KOEI ROT3K, but I also liked the height of the Warriors games era, especially Dynasty Warriors 5 XL and Samurai Warriors 2. The extra mode Sugoroku on SW2 is a great game worth dozens of hours of playtime by itself. Right after that, though, KOEI crashed hard and now can't make a decent game to save their own lives. DW6, DW7, SW3, DWG1&2, giant pile of suck. Even FOTNS was mediocre considering the source material. Bladestorm was a wasted opportunity... it played like a great game that was released unfinished. Bladestorm is the KOF12 of brawlers. ;)

FO3 can put me into a state of zen faster than any other game. I recently started a new game, immediately went to the Outcast bunker, played through the simulation, grabbed the Chinese Stealth Armor and the Shock Sword, and proceeded to bump my stats up, wearing a stack of hats that give me +4 perception, and the ghoul mask. I leave ghouls alone. I try to get most of my kills by reverse pickpocketing grenades and mines. Bought Clover and hired Jericho at different points only to let them die. I think that companions are stupid, but been thinking about getting the puppies perk.

Super Metroid - Probably the first time I ever felt like I had been given something as a result of a lot of time invested in a game. The impression this game made on me is absolutely indelible. I think back to how many months it took me to get through this game when it came out and I was 8 years old. I can get through it now in just over 2 hours. Timeless.

Braid - It's scary how much I identify with this game. In my eyes, it's just... Perfect.

ESPrade - The first shoot 'em up that really made me think. Great music. Great scoring system. I often think back on the times that I had the PCB and the many, many late nights spent in my basement trying to figure this game out. Got to the last stage, but never got that 1cc. Maybe later on...

Monster Hunter series - This is the gem of the last couple console generations in my eyes. Pure. Hardcore. Fun in a way that very few games are able to achieve these days. Restored my faith in games several times. Precisely the type of game I would have foreseen myself liking when I was a kid.

Card Fighters Clash - Played through this game a few times, the first of which was back when NGPC stuff was still being sold. Each time, I put in around 100 hours. I don't recall getting sick of this game, and I assume I could play it several more times on end and still enjoy it.

The question I stuck to when I compiled this list was this: Could I pick it up right now and enjoy it roughly as much as I did when it came out? The answer for all of these is yes. Sadly, there aren't very many other games outside of this list for which this holds true for me.

Mega Man (yes, just the first NES Mega Man)

lots of people will call it blasphemy but my favorite in the series is mega man 3. rush made the devices more useful and the slide feature gave me a new way to play and dodge enemies and bullets. the 4 extra and extended stages between wileys castle and the main 8 stages were great. having to get through the mm2 bosses with mm3 weapons added a new level of depth. and the music! oh the music!

the main consensus is mm2 is the pinnacle of the series, however i thought part 3 was more complete than part 2.

I don't think that's blasphemy at all.

I've always been partial to 4 myself for some reason. And the other day, I was playing 10. Not exactly the most critically acclaimed of the series, and it wasn't reviewed all that well... But going back to it, I was surprised by how much I liked it. I guess my expectations were lower than they were last time (I was hoping for another 9, which was great).

Megaman 3 was the first game of the series I owned, and it's a great game.

However, 2 is my favorite... and I think it's because it's not too long like 3 is.

Go ahead and check my sig for far more.

I've probably said it before, but it always makes me happy to see someone else who appreciates Shadowgate as much as I do.

On topic, and in no particular order-

1. Streets of Rage 2- I must have beaten this game hundreds of times, and it's still just as enjoyable now as the first time I played it. Great graphics, tight gameplay, and unforgettable music. This is the pinnacle of beat 'em up bliss.

2. Shining Force 2- Another game I'll never tire of. I remember falling in love with SFII as a kid after playing it on Sega Channel. This quickly became my favorite RPG due to the insanely addictive battles and fantastic character designs. The gameplay is more simple than today's SRPGs, but this game's charm keeps me coming back time and time again.

3. Resident Evil 2- This is the finest in the series to me. The atmosphere was nailed perfectly, creating a city that really seemed like hell on earth. Graphically the game was top notch, and the addition of the ZAP system and second game with Mr. X made for an incredible package.

4. Maniac Mansion- While many would say point-and-click adventures don't have much replay value, Maniac Mansion doesn't suffer from this due to the numerous ways you can solve the game's puzzles with all the different characters. Creative puzzles and a totally off the wall cast of characters make this a timeless classic in my eyes.

5. Samurai Shodown 2- This is the game that made me fall in love with the Neo. Even today the hand-drawn sprites and detailed backgrounds look fantastic. I can't even begin to imagine how much money I dumped into this game as a kid, and even today it's still so satisfying to play.
