Resident Evil 4
Another great list from Wes.
Here are mine, based primarily on their attach rate. These are the games that I either keep going back to or reside in my consciousness because of the bond I formed with them.
1.) Resident Evil (PSX)-first game. Showed me how a game could engage undesirable emotions (fear, tension, anxiety) on a level I'd never experienced before. Games became more than just 'games' for me on that day.
2.) Devil May Cry 4 (PS3)-I love the whole series (except for the second game) but the 4th game really connected with me. I was recovering from eye surgery so I had nothing to do but play this game. It was amazing, learning all the depth and challenge of running up the style meter. A vastly underrated game despite the sales and exposure-people that cased on this just didn't get into its sublime combat. And DMC 4 is the ultimate expression of Dante, firmly tied with Terry Bogard for my fave video game character of all time.
3.) Fallout 3-the finest video game of this console generation, IMO.
4.) Legend of Zelda-the whole series is magnificent, except for the CDI games, but I have to go with Majora's Mask. All the puzzle elements, platforming, combat challenges of Ocarina of Time combined with a very dark and disturbing story about the end of the world. It wasn't a retread of the same old story: Link was doing something new and different and I was really into it. I loved the masks and adopting different racial abilities as needed. I think Majora's Mask is the best Zelda game in terms of exposing the player to the aesthetics of LInk's universe.
5.) Metal Gear Solid-Metal Gear Solid for the PSX, the first one, is the greatest video game ever made. Relative to its hardware, it is an unbelievable achievement. There are games coming out TODAY that can't touch this one. I enjoy the entire series, but the first one is a masterpiece. On a technical level, level design, gameplay mechanics, complexity of story, boss fights, etc....there is no game higher. It's not my personal favorite game of all time, but I acknowledge its magnificence all the same.
Honorables (yes, I'm doing it)
Final Fantasy Series-there are some clunkiers in there, but with a 20+ year history of constant releases, there are bound to be some bad and middling entries. But most of them have been fun to play.
Gears of War series-the only squad based action shooter I've ever liked in multi (co-op only.) Great world building and gameplay.
Street Fighter 2 series-obvious reasons
Fatal Fury series-a wonderful series that was clearly a labor of love. Every entry is filled with SNK dev goodness.
Ninja Gaiden series-especially the NES entries, but I like the current gen offerings a lot for their intense and difficult action.
