So I was thinking of something in the vein of train set scenery. Foam topography mounted to plywood type stuff.

Cool idea. There actually is a 3D edition catan board game:

May be some info on the net about building one from scratch though, since that game is so popular.

Lately I've been playing Long Shot and I just picked up Tulipmania 1637, although I haven't had a chance to play it yet. Looks cool though. Stock market theme.

Holy crap! I love Catan and I've never seen something like that before. I'll have to go search for it now.

Anyone playing the new Castle Ravenloft game? For $65, the minis and tiles look great. From the YouTube videos I've seen, it reminds of the good 'ol HeroQuest, but anyone know if it's any fun?

3D Catan is collectors edition uber expensive IIRC.

I want to pick up Dust Tactics from FFG.

Maybe next month.

Jesus! $300+

That's the cost of a console. Sad thing is that I'd prolly have more fun with it than a next-gen console anway. :)

It is pretty bad ass that's for sure. I love the thieves haha.

So, any of you guys play HeroClix?

I used to play a few years ago with some friends, but we kinda went our separate ways as we got older, and I quit playing. I've made some new friends recently who are into adventure and board games and we're thinking of starting up again with the Blackest Night, Web of Spider-Man, and Watchmen sets. So any of you guys play or have any input on the game?

I don't care for Heroclix.

It's too slow and if you haven't memorized the dials of every character your opponent is fielding then you're at a serious disadvantage because you don't know what's coming up next (many characters get more powerful as they get damaged or get powers that in the rights situation can really hurt you.)

The game can get mind bogglingly tactical and lead players who like to plan their moves with some serious analysis paralysis. I also never cared for the turn order or the whole "pushing" mechanic.

The move to including cards with characters so your opponent would know what was coming up (and so they could make more powers) was good, but overall I just did not care for the game at all.

Then you have issues with power creep, over/under costing, etc, etc, etc.

I'm finally burned out on Collectible Games.

FFG finally got it right with the concept of the LCG (living card game) which I'm sure would also translate well to a miniatures format.

Bumpy:

Has anyone ever played Full Metal Planete (often misspelled "Planet"), I remember the adverts for the PC game in mags of the day had what I thought were miniatures made just for the ad --but turned out to be game pieces for the board game it's based off of.

No. Beautiful looking game with a limited release only in France IIRC. It fetches a high price on the second hand market. I think it has been long out of print.

Hit up boardgamegeek.com for more info. I think the game has a cult following. I would look up the info on the game myself but I am on my phone.

Triple post says what?

New games I've got:

  • Combat Commander: Mediterranean - Expansion to/Second Half of Combat Commander: Europe. All current Combat Commander: Europe expansions require ownership of Combat Commander: Med. This was a no brainer purchase I've just been putting it off. I love this system. Combat Commander is a pretty unique tactical WW2 system. Players used cards to issue orders to their troops and each nations deck of cards is suited to their general historic (albeit stereotyped) characteristics.
  • Dust Tactics - Tactical Miniatures board game published by Fantasy Flight Games. Originally developed by the Dust Games guys. The premise of the game is that the Axis and Allied forces found alien technology in 1943...and thus the Second World War continues on in to 1947 with Walking tanks and laser weapons. The Axisd and Allies now battle for control of Alien elements and seek out new alien tech. In the base game of the series the fighting all occurs in Antarctica. The miniatures in this game are wonderful by the way.

  • Conflict of Heroes: The Price of Honour: Ploand 1939 - The Polish expansion for the acclaimed hex and counter WW2 series "Conflict of Heroes." Poland owns. Not much more to say about that.

Anyone here played or at least heard some opinions on Last Night on Earth?

I believe I've asked before about zombie board game suggestions and this one looks intriguing.

I replied to you about this in the Board Game thread in the war room, but if you have any more specific questions about the game I can answer them as I've played this game about a dozen times.

I'm really looking forward to the release of Lords of the Rings: The Card Game as it appears to be a spiritual successor to the absolutely fantastic Middle Earth CCG by the now (I believe) defunct Iron Crown Enterprises (ICE.)

This new LotR card game seems more restrained in its scope with players simply having to defeat smaller chunks of of the overall larger War of the Ring story whereas in the Middle Earth CCG you were essentially taking on Sauron proper (and could even defeat the one ring.)

This new game is an LCG and not a CCG. An LCG is a "living card game" meaning at regular intervals it will receive fixed expansions. So if you want the new cards you just buy the new expansion. No randomness. Usually new cards come out every 1-2 months with major expansions coming out every year or two.

No specific questions, just looking for a general idea of how it plays such as how many people to make it worthwhile, does the game feel balanced for both sides, is there enough variety in the cards to give the game some strategy, how's the build quality of the product (other than needing to paint the figures, it looks decent from pictures), etc.

And it's nice to see a card game that doesn't require me to buy an entire booster box in the hopes of finding at least a couple good rares to give myself a chance. Having said that, I haven't felt compelled to play a card game in years and it's another case of needing a group to play with other than hoping to find people at the local trade/comic shop.

Last Night on Earth is kind of a lighter game in terms of strategy. There are different scenarios you can play, but most of them require you to march around the map and visit different buildings in an attempt to get better items. IIRC the items are drawn randomly from the deck or depending on what building you are in you can search the discard pile for a fairly specific item (usually a weapon.)

Combat is relatively simple. You need a weapon to kill a zombie, otherwise you simply push it away. Some weapons are better than others. Usually better weapons are better because of how many dice you can roll which increases your probability of getting a hit. With regard to fire arms you can run out of ammo depending on what you roll, and some weapons are more prone to run out of ammo, so using your weapon can be tense (you don't want to run out of ammo - in which case you simply discard the weapon) but generally using a weapon is advised. Your melee weapons can also break.

The characters are varied but are pretty stereotypical of horror movies (the jock, the prom queen, the cop, the priest, etc.) Each character has their own special abilities.

I guess a big part of the strategy would be the card play. Each player gets cards that they can play which can do various things such as allow them to move more spaces, roll extra dice, get a weapon, etc. The Zombie player has some truly nefarious cards allowing him to play more zombies, let zombies move farther, etc. One card the zombie player can get is the titular card "last night on earth" which is played on a female character and a male character in the same space on the board. They lose their turn because they are to occupied doing, uh, other things...cuz it's the last night on earth and all :emb:

What I like about this game is that basically the Zombies never go away. Most of the scenarios rely on you defending for a certain amount of turns or on escaping the town (in one scenario you have to fined the car keys, a can of gas, and then get to the truck with at least one person). There is a maximum amount of zombies that can be out at any given time, and some turns there will be less zombies - but there are always zombies.

I think evading the zombie thread and seeing the looming horde of the undead is a fun aspect of the game. Basically this is a game that you probably want to play with friends who like zombie stuff and can really get in to the game. Probably wouldn't hurt to have a few beers either.

Fantasy Flight Games has bout 3 or 4 other so called "Living Card Games" now. I have their Warhammer Fantasy LCG. Just the base set though. I never bought any expansions. It's an interesting game, but I think I could really hop on board this LotR LCG due to the fact I enjoy the source material more and I like the idea of going on quests, overcoming obstacles, obtaining powerful items, and luring powerful allies to my side.

Cannonball, any interest in the reprinting/rerelease of 1830?

I generally like train stuff but I've never really taken the plunge in to 18XX. I adore Railroad Tycoon/Rails of the World and I own Empire Builder (I wanted a crayon rails game) but I think I've wanted to play 1830 for quite some time. I've almost bought some of the other 18xx titles (1870, in particular) but always held out for some reason.

I'm definitely going to grab this up when it comes out.

It's almost the end of April and the Lord of the Rings LCG hasn't been released yet. I'm stilling planning on picking that up to see how fun it is. I enjoy card games, I like the idea of the LCG format, and I have a boner for Lord of the Rings so it should be good fun despite the game being somewhat abstract.

Which reminds me that I still need to pick up the starter set for the CCG Netrunner. I hear the two starter decks make for a wonderful little card game as they're pretty balanced. Interesting concept.

Since this is a boardgame thread, I recommend Battles of Westeros, by Fantasy Flight game.

Tactical boardgame based on A Song of Ice and Fire, the book series Game of Thrones is based on.

All the houses are represented between the main game and the expansions, and most of the characters. The battle system is fun, logical and enjoyable. You can play the battles from the novels or even make up original battles if you like.

The only problems with it are that it's only designed for two players (but you can modify the rules to let up to three play on a side with a second board) and the battles take a little time to set up. It's based on the Battlelore boardgame, which is no longer in print. I think it uses the same rules, actually. Well designed, and I think a lot of the mechanics would translate well to a PC game.

I also picked up the Game of Thrones Living Card Game, but have yet to try it. I wanted to read the books before I played to avoid spoilers.

Since you're on a Game of Thrones kick you might want to look at A Game of Thrones: The Board Game

You'll probably want to wait for this new 2nd Edition to come out as it incorporates a lot of things from the 1st editions expansions and it'd be expensive to buy the existing game and all the expansions now. I'm not familiar with the source material (having never read the books or even seen the TV show) but as far as board games go this looks to be more up my alley.

Perhaps this game will satisfy your need for GoT multiplayer action?

For whatever reason I did not know Battle of Westeros was based on Battelore.

If you did not know, Battlelore is part of the "Commands and Colors" system of games. Richard Borg (not to be confused with Richard Berg) is the creator of this system and there are a number of games employing it.

I enjoy this system much for it's ease of play and flexibility. I have not played Battlelore, but I own all of the expansions for Commands and Colors: Ancients which as the name implies is about warfare in ancient history. The base game features battles between Rome and Carthage (primarily during the Second Punic War) and the expansions giving you a host of other enemies to fight. The first expansion allows you to play battle between the various Greek city states as well as Greece vs. Persia. The later expansions deal with the Roman Civil Wars and Rome vs. the various "Barbarian" peoples (principally the germanic tribes.)

The newest Commands and Colors game is Command and Colors: Napoleon. I'd like to play it, but am not committed to buying it as of yet.

Taiso, if you're wanting a badass boardgame I highly recommend Battlestar Galactica by FFG. It's simply fantastic. FFG really knows how to get to the essence of an IP, and the fear and uncertainty of trying to figure out who the cylon traitor in your midst is is fantastic. I always play as Tigh of course :D

I'd heard they were rereleasing the Game of Thrones boardgame. I didn't know what would be different about it, so thanks for the extra insight.

I'm going to Gen Con next week and was hoping to score the GoT boardgame, but now that I know they're reissuing it, I'm just going to wait rather than pay inflated prices for the first edition.

I've heard nothing but awesome things about the BSG boardgame, and I'm going to demo it this year. Everyone I know that's played it totally loves it, and I'm going with a fuckton of money. Might have to drop some cash on this one. I'll probably get the expansions, too.

I would play BSG without the expansions first to get a feel for the game, unless someone who is familiar with the game is teaching you how to play. The FFG stuff usually works best when approached like that.

I need to get the expansions actually.

BUMP

Couple reasons I bumped the thread, including an update to this post from last year:

The first FFG game using the Star Wars license is set to come out at this years Gen Con and is titled Star Wars: X-Wing Miniature Game. I will be purchasing it. If anyone is familiar with Wings of War then you'll know what to expect. I have Wings of War. It's cool...but this is more up my alley especially since the minis come with your purchase whereas in Wings of War (WoW?) you had to purchase minis separately. For those who don't know what I'm talking about this will essentially be a dogfighting game using Star Wars ships set on a 2D plane. Really stoked for this release, particularly since I know the game wont be shit - unfortunately the last Star Wars space combat miniatures game I dropped money on was fucking atrocious (truly it was.)

Next on our agenda, I purchased three new board games. One arrives tomorrow and the other two on Saturday. Yes it was mostly binge/impulse purchasing. Whatever, life is short and I'm tired of dropping all my cash on firearms. That said, the games are:

I'm going to do a little write up on the Star Trek game for the Star Trek thread but I'll bump this thread and post a link to that particular post. I'll have lots of photos because I think a lot of Trek fans on this site would like this game.

If anyone is interested I can post some photos of the other two fantasy games I'm getting. I might do it anyway (I just need launch a new website really.)

Lastly:

Holy mother of fuck this game is my next purchase.

PS: I played Twilight Imperium Third Edition for the first time some weeks ago and yeah. It's a badass game that initially seems difficult to learn but goes smoothly once you get in to it. That's not to say all of the strategy immediately becomes apparent in one playthrough of course. The game has depth for sure. Dying for another play. Need to bother my work buddy about doing another round of this game.

Peace out or Fuck Off, whichever you prefer.

Here is a video preview for Descent: Journeys in the Dark - Second Edition

The cool thing about 2nd edition is that you can still use all the Heroes and Monsters from first edition with a conversion kit that is pretty cheap (it's like under $20 street price) and there are a ton of heroes and monsters if you own the first edition and all its expansions. I have all the expansions except one (didn't come with any new miniatures) and I still might try to pick it up to complete my collection.

While it's not as big on the miniatures aspect there's also Dungeon Run.

pic954632_md.jpg

And last month I got myself a copy of Summoner Wars which seems like a lot of fun. Helps that it's a 2 player game since it's easier to get started.

And since most of Lagduf's games seem to be from FFG I'll finish the post with the last Plaid Hat Game, the upcoming....

PS: Heard anything about Android. It first caught my eye because it had me thinking Blade Runner for obvious reasons.
