No, after watching again the original is much better. Still awesome for a game trailer. Hell, it's awesome if it were a movie.

That trailer was AMAZING. FUCKING AMAZING. And yes, I know Mad World gets used a lot, but I think it fit very well. The first was great, but the Mad World thing just gets me emotional for some stupid reason.

the Mad World version was kind of a satire

First person melee game? From the people who gave us the largely forgettable Call of Juarez games? No thanks.

BUMP

I initially wrote Dead Island off as just another zombie game. But after reading more info on it I like what I see. It is like Left 4 Dead, but the focus is more on melee than gunplay (although there is that too) and there's a skill tree system. And after watching the newest trailer, I'm convinced that Dead Island is the Borderlands of 2011. I'll be on the Xbox360 and I hope to see you folks online.

I really like the idea that the emphasis will be on melee and not guns. Having to get up close and personal will definitely heighten the tension.

Looking forward to the vehicle and skill tree aspects, too.

As big a fan as I am of Resident Evil, I am looking forward to Dead Island SO much more than Operation: Racoon City/Resident of War/Gears of Evil.

Bump, if only because I'm hyped and what to talk about Dead Island a bit.

From watching all the interviews I could I've learned that...

What's Known
-Four character classes: Leader, Tank, Assassin and Jack-Of-All.
-Three skill trees for each class.
-Four player online, drop-in drop-out, co-op.
-Firearms are rare weapons. Melee weapons are common and are the primary source of offense.
-The world is wide open (a la Fallout 3). Exploration is encouraged, but with caution.
-Weapons have a durability grade. Broken weapons are not useable until they're repaired at a workbench.
-Some elements of the environment can be used as weapons, e.g. propane tanks can explode for splash damage.
-One of the collectibles are blueprints. These blueprints are used to increase weapon durability, damage and add modifications.
-Zombies are tuned to the player/player party level and are randomly generated. So you can never kill all the zombies on the island.
-Zombie variety shown thus far: slow, fast, blazing, kamikaze/suicider, tank/ram, and toxic/explosive/sponge. Unique, boss-level zombies have been confirmed as well.
-Teammates who're near death can be brought back by a fellow teammate, a la Left 4 Dead.
-On offense, running and melee attacks use stamina. Do either too much and you'll be in a bad situation. Firearms and physical attacks do not use stamina.
-Melee weapons can be thrown for offensive damage at no stamina cost, and can then be retrieved for subsequent use.
-There are vehicles. They're easy to use on the outer rim of the island, but debris in the city area makes vehicle use difficult.
-Developers suggest that the game is atleast 20 hours long, start to finish with little exploration. But a thorough exploration of Dead Island, finding all the collectibles and the best weapons, could take a player well over 100 hours to do.
-Weather does have a slight effect on the strength of weapon modifications, e.g. during rainy weather fire weapon damage will be reduced, but electrical weapon damage will be increased.
-No restrictions on a party's character levels. So a max leveled character can join and level one character's party and help that person through the game.
-Every character comes equipped with a flashlight for dark areas and night time, but batteries for the flashlight must be occasionally replaced. There's no word on if batteries drop as loot from enemies or if they must be found through exploration.

What's Unknown
-The nature of the co-op, is it tethered, is it not tethered?
-No word on the level cap.
-No specifics on the skill trees. Interviews suggest the trees will consist of active, passive, and support/group skills.

General Thoughts
As I've said before, I think Dead Island has the potential to be the sleeper hit of 2011. To me, Dead Island looks as though it takes the best of Borderlands, Left 4 Dead and Fallout 3 and throws it all together. An open world, action/adventure/FPS/survival horror/online multiplayer co-op extravaganza. It's Left 4 Dead with a vast world to explore and a larger variety of weapons. It's Fallout 3 with three friends by your side. It's Borderlands with an emphasis on teamwork, communication and strategy.

What's not to like? Here's one of the better interviews I've seen.

Two more months folks. I can't wait.

Probably more to do with the play style of the character. Small weapons used in multiple, quick attacks. I doubt the assassin class will be able to use large, heavy melee weapons. Or it might, but at a larger stamina cost than it would be for the tank class.

Remind me again why everyone is so hot and heavy for this game? Ohhh wow, another FPS style game with zombies. Yippee skippee. First and foremost, I'm so sick of zombie themed games. If you’re desperate for a hot theme to base your game on, look no further than zombies. It’s slowly becoming the gaming de facto. It’s almost a surprise when a game either doesn’t have zombies, or at least has zombie themed DLC. Just get it over with and release a 3-D zombie game. Kill two fads with one stone.

Now can we back the hype train up and look at the most important factor no one, besides a few folks, has really focused on: the developer. Dead Island is developed by Techland. Techland? Seriously, this is the game company who will usher in a new era of orgasmic gaming? Let's take a quick look at Techland's illustrious resume of games:

Crime Cities (2000)
Speedway Championships (2001)
Pet Racer (2001)
Pet Soccer (2001)
FIM Speedway Grand Prix (2002)
Day of the Mutants (2002) - Cancelled
Chrome (2003)
Xpand Rally (2004)
Chrome: SpecForce (2005)
GTI Racing (2006)
Crazy Soccer Mundial (16 June, 2006)
FIM Speedway Grand Prix 2 (2006)
Xpand Rally Xtreme (2006)
Call of Juarez (2006), (2007)
FIM Speedway Grand Prix 3 (2008)
Nikita: Tajemnica Skarbu Piratow (2008)
Speedway liga (2009)
Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood (July 3, 2009)
nail'd (November 30, 2010)
Call of Juarez: The Cartel (2011)
Dead Island (2011)

The only thing worth half a damn is the Call of Juarez series. Even that is a mediocre romp through FPSville lost in the shuffle of much better FPS titles. The rest is utter drivel or yet more mediocrity. I can hear it now, "What, the developers of Pet Racer are making a zombie themed FPS! Hot diggity dog, count me in!"

So this is the developer who's garnered all this hype and praise? Am I missing something? Oh right, it's a zombie game and it's "open world" so the hype train has come into the station ready for the gaming elite to board.

Well choo choo my friends. I for one couldn't care less about this title. In a day in age when venerable developers such as Treasure and Platinum Games have amazing games glossed over by the general public, such as Sin & Punishment: Star Successor and Vanquish respectively, it marginally pisses me off to see this no name mediocre developer get the attention and praise for a tired worn out concept.

The lowest common denominator wins again.

I like dystopian zombie fiction so I'm all in for this.

Looking good so far.

For some reason this post sounded like a Matt Foley speech to me. Musta been the "Well choo choo my friends" bit. Maybe Techlands offices are in a van down by the river.

Well choo choo my friends.

That comment had (and still has) me rollin'. Techland's track record is not that great, I can't argue against that. But I feel as though the parts are there for something potentially special. Perhaps not original, but entertaining none the less.

Edit: I found a video of straight up gameplay; no voiceover, no interview or other effects.

Now I don't know about the rest of you, but I was tense as I watched that video. This isn't L4D, where you had unlimited dual pistol ammo to handle a horde of zombies. Dead Island gives me the feeling of, "if I turn around the wrong corner...(there's half a dozen zombies) I can kiss my ass goodbye."

It looked alright. There was certainly some clipping issues and a few enemy's polygons melded into one another. Gameplay looked a bit weak. Kick, hit, with accompanying average animation. That's the thing, from a gameplay aspect, there's nothing that looks absolutely outstanding to me. It may have a cool setting, but the trappings and mechanics look below average IMO.

Nothing immerses you into the feeling of actually being trapped on an island full of zombies like having experience point numbers pop out of enemies every time you hit them. Really adds to the atmosphere of dread. And the health bar meters floating over the zombies' heads just makes everything 10 times creepier.

Right?

STK, I think I may have a man crush on you. I know you're wrong for me in every way and my friends keep warning me, but I can't help what I feel. :emb:
