Looks like the beta is going to happen Q3 of this year. I don't see the game coming out this year, but its still possible especially if the beta starts in July or August.

I may install D2 on my computer just so I can register with bnet and get on the beta sign up list.

I hope my account is still on the Battle.net site. I kept getting tons of spam emails to my old email address saying I was trying to sell my account, I had somebody trying to log into my account and other shit like that. So I don't really know if it's still there or not. I'll just make another one to try to get into the BETA. Hopefully the Witchdoctor is as fun as the Necromancer was.

I've never been more eager for a game than Diablo 3, although I do have a backup plan with Torchlight 2. As long as one of those is good, I am content with the state of modern gaming. I like these games where you work on building up a character, but I've sworn off MMOs because I can't handle playing games on anyone's schedule.

Anyway, I was seeing if people here were talking about D3, and I wanted to post the news from last month that Blizzard told its investors a beta will happen sometime in July-September of this year. Hopefully my computer's weird specs will make them choose me. Most betas suck for me because you can't even save anything you accomplished, but I don't care with this genre. It always seems fun to start over again. (love hardcore mode)

D2 was the most fun I had playing a multiplayer game, ever, so my anticipation for this is blowing my mind. Another person here hoping they get in on the beta action.

This game will consume my life!

Dragon's Crown or GTFO
I was just thinking that a forum war is on its way between these two. All that it's gonna take is when people start forming "groups" on the boards and refuse to accept someone into the Diablo 3 group if they're in the Dragon's Crown group or vice versa, or force them to renounce their "faith" in the other game being "the true multiplayer fantasy game."

If a game takes ten years to produce and it still has to compete with a game that's basically produced in single year by five guys, I'd really think that respect for the former is unvalidated.

It hasn't been in production that long, the original iteration was scrapped. I didn't try to find specifics but Diablo 3 in its current form was probably started around 2005/2006.

Dragons Crown looks great and should be a fun side distraction while waiting for D3 to release, whenever that happens.

Comparing Dragon's Crown to Diablo 3 as if they're the same genre is asinine.

Diablo 3 is going to be fantastic. Can't wait. Shame it wont be out this year.

Awesome.

At this rate "Grim Dawn"(www.grimdawn.com) will be out first. Which would be fine for me as I feel the "Titan Quest" team actually improved on the Diablo equation a hell of a lot.
I hate the level up system in Diablo 2 - 1 fucking skill point per level. Fuck that. I hope this changes in D3.

Torchlight 2 will be out this year, with co-op.

Hell, Torchlight 3 will probably beat Diablo 3 to the market next year.

That said, I will be playing them all. It's good that we'll have some variety in the dungeon crawl genre.

Wouldn't be so bad if they would have let you reset the skill points. (I know that WOW at least gives you the option for in game gold, so I'm guessing D3 will do the same. Plus the once per difficulty level reset option) (Double edit: I completely forgot about farming for the materials to make a respec potion. Would still prefer the option to switch between two skill sets at will or at least in town) Or switch styles so to speak to suit different situations. Mainly I just wish D2 didn't feel so much like you had to pour all of your skill points into a single skill (and its synergies) for them to be useful.

I know you didn't have to stick to a single skill the entire way but it always felt like it would put you at a disadvantage.

I really enjoyed the ease in which you could plug in various mods into Torchlight and I hope that the Diablo team takes note and adopts at least some level of that or that Torchlight 2 doesn't lose that to accommodate multiplayer.

With the latest (and presumably last) patch to Diablo 2 you are able to re-spec your stats once per difficulty (normal-nightmare-hell) I kind of like how bastardly tough Diablo is in that regard that you kind of have to plan your character ahead.

I hear you on how you really have to specialize in D2 to be effective, particularly once you get to the higher difficulties. I can't wait for D3.

Torchlight 2 should be a lot of fun as well and a nice primer to D3.

Yeah, titan quest was fantastic. I expect grim dawn will be more of the same, considering its using the titan quest engine and its by the old iron lore team. Except it really seems to borrow heavily on the diablo theme, which is a welcome change. Also looking forward to torchlight 2.

Little update:

Blizzard had a recent press event on the 27th, info here, among many other fans sites.

"Here comes the bombshell: he also introduced to us the auction house. The real money auction house. Yes, an auction house that you pay/sell items for real cash and vice versa. "

No mention on when the beta starts but it appears to be soon.

EDIT: LOLZ?

"From Blizzard in 2007: The game's Terms of Use clearly states that all World of Warcraft content is the property of Blizzard Entertainment, and Blizzard does not allow 'in-game' items to be sold for real money. Not only do we believe that doing so would be illegal, but it also has the potential to damage the game economy and overall experience for the many thousands of others who play World of Warcraft for fun ... While we can understand the temptation to purchase items for real money, we feel that players can find ample equipment and money for their characters within the game through their own adventuring and questing. "

They're doing something similar with WoW..."premium service" so you can run dungeons with Real ID friends on different realms....yeah. no.
I can almost taste Activisions greedy influence.

More on the auction house. (1up.com)

-Like you'd expect, it features both an auto-bidding and an instant buyout price. Players are kept anonymous during the process, and there will be one regional auction house per currency type.

-Nearly everything can be sold. Items, gold, and later on, even characters, can be sold through this auction house. Only quest-related or very specific items will be soulbound to players; everything else that drops on the ground can be auctioned.

-The auction house interface can be pulled up anywhere, and items can be sold from either your current character's inventory or from the shared stash. Transactions happen pretty much instantly (and securely), and if you successfully bid on an item, it then shows up in your shared stash.

-There will be a smart-search mode that can automatically loot for suitable items based on your current equipment and what would work best upgrade-wise. You can also specify certain parameters for your build, or search for items by class (since everything works in and out of your shared stash).

-Blizzard will charge a listing fee and a sale fee. The former you pay no matter what, while the latter only comes up if you make a sale. No specific figures have been given, but Pardo describes these fees as "nominal. He also believes that since there is a listing fee, this will help the auction house self-correct into only listing noteworthy items, as people would be discouraged to pay a listing fee to sell trash or vendor loot.

-On the flipside, to help seed the auction house and to let players get a feel for the auction house without investing too much money, Blizzard plans to let players have a number of free listings per week.

-The auction house is designed to facilitate player trading; Blizzard has no plans to officially post items for sale through the auction house themselves. Nor will the company put up gameplay enhancing additions in the auction house.

-Players have two choices for proceeds from their sales: The default option puts the funds into their Battle.net e-balance. That e-balance can be used for goods/services offered by Blizzard, ranging from purchasing items from the auction house to World of Warcraft subscription time or other paid services (such as character transfers). The other option is to "cash-out" the sale to a third-party payment provider (Pardo comments that the contract hasn't been finalized, so he couldn't name the service just yet we're assuming PayPal or somesuch). Though, the cash-out option could be subject to transaction fees from both Blizzard and the third-party provider.

-The currency-based auction house is completely optional. Player-to-player trading still exists, and there will be an auction house that uses in-game gold as well. Also note that the auction house is the only method of using real-world currency (i.e. no using cash for player-to-player trades).

-Hardcore characters (a special difficulty mode that features permadeath for characters) cannot used the currency-based auction house, only the in-game gold one. "We're protecting players from themselves -- we don't want a situation where someone spent a lot of money and then that character --along with the items -- gets deleted due to combat or PVP soon afterwards," notes Pardo.

-Interestingly, Blizzard's official position is that if an item gets altered in a patch down the line, Blizzard will not provide a refund or any other accommodations if this happens. So buyer beware: your new loot could get nerfed.

-Finally, the gold-based auction house will be featured in the D3 beta. The currency-based auction house won't be live until launch. "It'd be mean to have that running since we wipe all the beta characters at the end," quips Pardo.
