Hitfix's own editor, Greg Ellwood, is a man whose cinematic taste I admire a lot and is certainly no over eager fanboy when it comes to comic movies. His reaction? "Even better than Spider-Man 2, Iron Man or any Marvel movie so far in my opinion. Ambitious, smart and when it's good, it's very good. Not Nolan level though."

That is ALOT of hype to live up to.

Unlike the last two X-Men films, First Class is not the multi-coloured, wham-bam spandex-fest you might be expecting. It's all the better for it, though. Instead, it's shot and paced a lot like an early James Bond movie. There's a globe-trotting storyline, a cast who dress immaculately at all times - not to mention some explicit shout-outs to the likes of Scaramanga's mirror maze in The Man With The Golden Gun in the set design.

I'm not saying X-Men: First Class is as good as The Dark Knight, because it isn't. But it IS as good as Batman Begins, and Vaughn and his writing partner Jane Goldman - surely two of the best pairs of ears for blockbuster dialogue in the business - could easily wring a franchise out of this, if they so wish.

When you come out of a superhero movie raving about the special effects, that's one thing. But when you come out raving about the cast's chemistry, the storytelling, and how much damn FUN it was, that's another thing entirely. First Class? Yep. I'd say that's just about the measure of it.

From the News of The Worlds review, they gave it 4/5. Its the News of the world though so.....

I hope it gets great reviews.

It's a very high concept film.

Superheroes set in the 60s.

Fuck yeah.

And I desperately NEED for an X-Men movie without Wolverine to be a good film. I need for them to be able to prove that his importance to the X-Men is overstated, and that his appeal as an individual character has very little to do with the real value of the property.

In fact, I hope this movie is the best super hero movie ever made, for precisely that reason. For me to say that, when Cap is my favorite super hero of all time and he ALSO has a movie coming this summer, is a big deal for me.

Agreed. I really hope they haven't tried to shoehorn Wolverine into the movie somehow.

Why is it that every movie that I write off and refuse to watch ends up getting rave reviews? Is there something wrong with me?

I'll see how the general critics react. I used to contribute advanced reviews to Dark Horizons (like a decade ago) and sometimes you'd get oddball fanboys really pumping a movie that was pretty lame. I dislike those sites now... nothing from that era is as infamous as Harry Knowles glowing review of Godzilla.

I fucking despise Ain't It Cool.

I don't go there for spoilers and I don't go there to read their staff circle jerk each other and whatever movie they're talking up. They mislead people so much with their complete slurpfest of anything genre related.

Ugh. Yeah, I remember that Godzilla thing that was back when I very first got on the internet. I follow him on Twitter(yeah, I know) he still has quite a few moments of gushing over complete shit for like 24-48 hrs. before completely doing a 360. Or at least give very vague positive opinions on questionable stuff. But he still gets to screen a lot of stuff early, or get pretty cool free shit in the mail on a regular basis. I still can't figure out how he gets to all these screening and whatnot considering he can't walk. I can't even look at AICN anymore though.

Sometimes they get halfway interesting interviews though, the recent one with T. Stout for example.

Edit: hahaha 360 sheesh

A good X-Men movie is all I ask, sure a reboot would have been cool and disavowing any association to Singer but just let it be good

As of right now, 53 out of 54 reviews are positive.

Everything out this summer that I assumed would be shit... Thor, Fast Five, Kung Fu Panda 2, Bridesmaids (!!!) has a majority of good reviews.

My world is being turned upside down. If Green Lantern gets good reviews I'll have an aneurysm.

Hmm... the first eight major reviews gave it a good review. If they continue on like this I look forward to seeing it and trying to figure out how it compares versus how the guy at the Arizona Republic put it:
"X-Men: First Class" isn't anywhere close to being a genre classic like "Spider-Man 2" or "The Dark Knight," but it is good enough to rejuvenate a franchise stuck on idle.

It doesn't need to reach those two classics to satisfy me, that the were bought up as a point of comparison is a good thing.

The last movie I saw was the Green f'n Hornet, which made me so angry I wanted to pulverize the moron that played the Hornet and co-wrote the dumbass script. I rarely get angry AT a movie but this new X-Men film will be a masterpiece compared to that crap.

I'm digging the 60s setup, especially appropriate since the franchise premiered in '63. I hope Havok keeps his old-school black costume with white rings and head gear. Definitely the coolest costume in comics with the Green Lantern a close second.

This was a million times better than I thought it would be. I only went because my friend asked and I had a gift card. When they make this kind of "when they were kids" spin-off, it usually blows. But this was actually really good. It definitely had a lot of cheesiness to it and fucking Flipper the Ginger pissed me off. Beast's lip sync was basically non-existant and 12-year-old Magneto was a horrific actor. But other than that, it was pretty damn good.

Better or worse than Muppet Babies or The Flintstone Kids?

(I'm planning to see it sometime this week)

I think you'll find the film pretty engaging.

I'd pretty much given up on this franchise, but I'm very pleased with how this movie turned out. Definitely the best X-Men movie out of the bunch, as far as I'm concerned.

In general I really liked the vibes in this movie, and it was unexpectedly violent.

One part I could not stand is just near the beginning when
Spoiler:
Erik is screaming "nein" while breaking a bunch of metal shit. Made me cringe a lot.

Is this what the X-Men Origins: Magneto project ultimately turned into?

I remember reading years ago, not long after X2's release, about Origins Wolverine and Magneto. Considering X3 killed whatever potential sequel in the franchise and that Origins Wolverine didn't exactly win critics over, I assumed that's what happened to the Magneto movie.

PS Taiso you need to give us one of your huge-ass review texts. not today, not even tomorrow. just, when you're ready.

He has a cameo...

that and michael ironside out of nowhere were part of the many, many highlights of this very, very good movie. just got back from seeing it at the theater, and i enjoyed the fuck outta it. one major thing that i liked was how it kept to the canon (of sorts) that the first 3 x-men movies had set up, effectively de-canon-izing the Wolverine movie. can't wait if we get a first class pt. 2 outta all this. this movie hopefully means that, some years from now, we could get a x-men movie that even reintroduces deadpool and gambit! ...a nerd can dream...

Yeah, this was pretty good. I guess I had high hopes for it, and surprisingly, they were met.

You're probably right about the Magneto origins thing, Sage. I really liked the parts of the movie that focus on him.

I'm refraining from giving more detailed thoughts right now specifically because I intend to write a proper review for the movie tomorrow or on Tuesday. The film is strong enough to warrant some good examination of its themes, events and characters.

I even liked the Wolverine cameo, and my absolute hatred for what that character has become is well known.

Going to wait for the bluray.

Didn't expect such a good general opinion.
