He has to be trying to start a riot so that he can have an excuse to retain control.

Still stuck with Suleiman (and now the Army) in power. Not really any better.

That is true.

But, if Suleiman moderates his behavior due to external pressure, then it conceivably could get better. In my home country Taiwan, the son Chang Ching-Kuo that succeeded his big poppa Generalissimo Chang Kai-Shek was the chief of the secret police during the age of White Terror, and he turned out to be a fairly moderate president, although a lot of complicated factors and actors prolly contributed to that.

The other legs of support — Netanyahu, Abu Mazen — are still around though. This will take commitment from the Egyptian people — it's gonna be a long struggle.

The problem is Suleiman wasn't elected. He was appointed to this position less than two weeks ago by a dictator that has just been thrown out of the country. Letting one of the bigger human rights violators just take over the country sight unseen isn't what people want and, despite all of the cheers on the ground about loving the army, nobody wants more military dictators.

All this talk of shutting down communications and etc, etc got me looking at satellite solutions. There is some really cool stuff out there for mobile satellite connectivity.

The Football takes the cake. Love it. Though, I don't know if it would be as easy as they claim it would be to get that on a plane ;)

Outta the frying pan, into the fire.

no kidding. Now they need to rebuild and avoid falling into fundamental Muslim rule. Hopefully a coalition government can be found.

Having the military in charge freaks me a bit since they sometimes have a tendency to not give up power

Neither was Chang Kai-Shek's successor, his son. We had the mock elections that everyone knew was just ballot stuffing and vote buying. It was truly the last dynasty after Qing. This will all depend upon the will of the Egyptian people, but also the will of all people of conscience around the world in solidarity.

There wasn't even a need for ballot stuffing or vote buying. In Taiwan under Chang's rule, people did not get to vote for presidents, but rather some representative from each state that are supposedly elected by people of each state. But since Mao conquered every state except Taiwan, the representatives never needed to be reelected.

Not that there were any other candidates to vote for on the ballots except for Chang. XD

True before lifting of martial law, not true afterwards. Taiwan utilizes the popular vote after martial law was lifted, and then it was all kinds of party apparatchik engaging in influence peddling under the guise of free democratic election.

Well, the proof is in the pudding. We will just have to wait and see if the Egyptian Army peacefully hand the reigns of government to the new administration in September.

Although, I find it deliciously ironic that Americans hate democracy so much.

The following exchange actually happened on facebook and I saw it. To me, this cuts to the core of what you just said.

A hyper conservative Republican Jewish girl I know from Alabama lets on that she has no idea what is going on in Egpyt.

Her friend says there is a massive pro-democratic revolution going on there.

She says, "Democrats AND Muslims? Gee that sounds like a party - just like our 'commander in cheif'..."

Therein lies a large problem. You say 'Pro-Democratic' and they hear 'Democratic Party'. These are the types of people who would sell out our Democratic rights in a heartbeat because they thought it wise or advantageous.

Have elections at the end of the month?

In two weeks? Yeah, the country can prepare for valid elections in 2 weeks. If you want to do something right, you need to prepare for it properly. Just doing something without proper preparation is a good way to fail.
