That it's based off the original mini seems like a positive sign. But even after X3 and Origins, I have no faith that the studio has learned its lesson about sticking their oar in and fucking things to shit. Every bit being leaked from First Class makes it sound like a disaster in progress, with huge tension between director and studio, huge reshoots without director involvement, etc.

Ummmm, hahaha sounds like a hoax.
??

In November 2010, Aronofsky stated that the title of the film will be The Wolverine and described the film as a "one-off" rather than a sequel.[147] Also in November, Fox Filmed Entertainment sent out a press release stating that they have signed Darren Aronofsky and his production company Protozoa Pictures to a new two-year, overall deal. Under the deal, Protozoa will develop and produce films for both 20th Century Fox and Fox Searchlight Pictures. Aronofsky’s debut picture under the pact will be The Wolverine.[148] It has been reported that the film will begin principal photography in March 2011 in New York City before the production moves to Japan for the bulk of shooting.[149]

It'll probably have the same end result as Del Toro and The Hobbit.

But nothing about that was a hoax. Del Torro was working on the Hobbit. He worked on it for about 2 years.

Yeah, I know...

You showed me that this actually has a green light.

Now I'm saying that it'll have complications that'll lead to Aronofsky not directing it afterall.

It's real. I heard an interview (I think it was NPR) in December where he said he wanted a break from the hellish development cycles he's had with his other movies when it comes to getting studio backing (yes, even Black Swan). He was looking forward to trying his hand at something the studio really wanted made and where he got to play with the stuff that a big production like that would have.

Darren Aronofsky and Hugh Jackman probably means this is a sequel to The Fountain. In the first few minutes I expect to learn that Wolverine was captured by Emma Frost and the events of The Fountain were a telepathically-induced hallucination designed to shatter Wolverine's psyche.

When does Marvel get the rights to make these movies again to put them in their overall continuity they've been setting up since Iron Man.

I think never, as long as Fox keeps churning out movies. I've read the rights only revert to Marvel if Fox doesn't make one for a certain amount of time. And Fox would rather rush out garbage than lose the rights.

makes me hopeful that the movie might be grounded in a little more 'reality'...

This can be good is someone other than Jackman is used. After his performances in X-Men 3 and Origins, I can't take him seriously. I just imagine Van Helsing fucking things up over and over again.

I dig everything Aronofsky has come up with so far though. Most of his movies are incredibly rewatchable.

I hope its just a shot-for-shot remake of Black Swan but with Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in the spot of the Natalie Portman character. The ending would still work!

We'll see, after the Captain America, Thor, and Avengers movies. You could be right, though. I think Avengers will do okay regardless, but I'm still not convinced anyone is going to want to watch the other two.

Jackman's apparently on a 6,000 calorie/day intake to become more muscular to fit Aronofsky's vision of the character.

Personally, if they aren't going to tie this to the existing continuity and their plan is to create a separate, stand alone thing (as everything I've read on the subject leads me to believe,) I'd rather they just recast the role. Jackman's version of the X-Men universe is all fucked up now anyway, and it needs to be buried. There is no joy in the current X-men film franchise anymore. They became increasingly morose and lost any spirit, charm or wit as they went along. The first one was fairly decent as a standalone, but 2 and 3 were both pretty horrible and the Wolverine movie was godawful.

As for these movies being made in the same continuity with the Iron Man films, you can pretty much forget about that ever happening. Fox has rights of first refusal on X-men, Fantastic Four and a bunch of others, while Sony has rights of first refusal on Spider-Man. As has been explained earlier in this thread, it basically means that if a studio commits to making another movie utilizing those characters, they get to keep them. I could see Ghost Rider, Daredevil, Elektra and some others eventually reverting back to Marvel in time, but X-Men, FF and Spidey aren't going anywhere.

Also, I don't really think it matters that these characters exist in the same universe. I mean, as a long time comic fan, it's cool to see them interact with one another, but it won't be very common. Disney won't really make that much more money on the Avengers movie than they will on an Iron Man, Thor or Cap movie. All it will end up doing is costing more to make, which will eventually lead to sequels suffering budget restrictions and other logistical hamperings and so forth.

I don't even care about any kind of continuity in these movies. All of the comics have f'd up timelines, and those are different from the cartoons, different from the movies, etc. I would rather just have excellent stand-alone movies that are not dependent on pre-existing storylines.

X-Men was enjoyable as a stand-alone movie, and then completely jumbled into a mess with the two sequels. Instead of taking a single alternate storyline and making it into a concise movie (like Days of Future Past or God Loves Man Kills), the studios seems to want cash cows with multiple sequels.

I think this movie is more stand alone and based on the Wolverine Miniseries by Frank Miller
