hey man I was really not being serious. its definitely cruel... pretty nasty too. not eating it is reasonable and understandable.

just exagerating the point that almost everyone likes fried chicken, even people who don't eat it can like it. definitely far from a black thing.

I feel like chicken and waffles originated in Holland, and that the first time I heard of it was off a beastie boys song in the 90s.

Maybe you're right.

I mean, wikipedia doesn't know either. But let's put together some out of the box thinking.

Waffles = Belgium
Belgium = three major groups of people, French, German, Dutch
Dutch = Slavery. They brought over the blacks from Africa and sold them for profit.

Hollands = made in the US as a crossbreed of Dutch birds with some US ones. Forget this, I was expecting something else.

But basically, we understand that chicken is universal. The universe includes Holland. Slavery is not universal, but the Dutch were evil slavers, who also brushed their teeth with urine, and they lived near belgium, where they had waffles. It's very possible that they fed their slaves chicken and waffles.

Shouldn't the school be applauded for serving fried chicken on MLK day? Seriously, fried chicken and waffles? That school is bad ass. Our greatest hope were those octagonal Mexican pizzas when it came to noon-slop. And besides, doesn't this country have enough white-guilt as is? If I was a kid, I'd happily eat that for school lunch all of February. Stop thinking of it as racial... it's celebratory!

Everyone eats fried chicken but only black people get made fun of for it.

They're always trying to sneak something in on us. Don't act like this article is making something outta nothing.

My gut reaction when I first read it was "Wow...the audacity". I couldn't believe they served it. It is some damn good food tho.

The funny thing is they could serve fried chicken and waffles on any other day of the year and not have a problem.

No doubt about it being good food but here in the US it always seems like there's some hidden agenda.

Before I left Germany to move back to the states a racist coworker of mine(believe me he was as racist as can be) had a one on one with me. He basically wanted to know what "code words/phrases", "acronyms", "signals", "slurs"etc. do we have that signify white people. I looked at him and told him that I had absolutely no clue other than the 2 known words. He told me that he didn't believe me because he knew all the ones for us and that their had to be just as many for him. I kept telling him and he still wouldn't believe me and seemed pretty determined.

Basically to summarize what I'm trying to say, it reminded me how much hidden racism this country has. I've been away in Europe for a while and haven't really had to deal with it so kinda forgotten. But when he said that it just opened everything back up.

The problem is because it's so hidden that you can't really tell if it's genuine or a mockery. Puts us in a situation where we can be perceived as being overly sensative.

p.s. when I was living in Montana they kids at school used to call me "Casper". I was pretty oblivious to it until I guess they couldn't take it anymore and decided to just come out and openly switch it with the "n-word".

I agree with you. But I think even when its a mockery, there is usually a kernel of genuine malice.

White American people crave black culture because theirs is, for the most part, completely awful and worthless. African American culture, to be specific, is the most emulated culture on the planet, all over the world. Its even made a huge impact on the modern Africa. The only thing even coming close is house/techno/trance music.

So whites in the USA bump lowest common denominator superficial rap music, fuck their girlfriends to it, talk in the best ghetto slang they can to make jokes (because they are not funny), and then still make racist jokes, lock their car windows/doors, walk across the street from blacks, etc etc etc.

Sometimes white people think they can say extremely racist shit as long as its in the context of a 'joke' but secretly its because they are obsessed with 'the other' and still think its funny that they have the social 1-up.

Oh well. I've never felt like an average 'white' person, and its because Im not.

If you'd of held a student vote at my high school "would you like us to serve fried chicken ?" it would have won by a minimum of 90% yes.

However, if the school just up and did it one day there would be a public reaction of "95% black school, they started serving fried chicken, clearly racist move".

The bottom line was, the students at my school by vast majority wanted fried chicken, but they couldn't get it. Giving the students what they wanted would be taken as being "racist" towards them.

And yeah, what gets stereotyped as "black" food (soul food) isn't a black thing. It's a southern thing.

that's usually the case and is fairly easy to spot but sometimes the shit is well hidden. I mean just look at this one for example. "Dan" is a pretty common name. As a matter of fact it's my name but it also happens to be an acronym for "Dumb Ass Nigger". I thought it was pretty funny when I found out about it but if I'm out and about and get confronted with a situation where it gets used then I'm a "wtf" situation. I could get hit with "why do ya'll always pull the race card" or I can just swallow it and keep going.

After you've delt with it for so long it's hard to swallow and keep walking. It creates this nasty inner conflict that many just can't seem to understand.

Go to Ireland and Scotland and you'll probably start viewing the most racist redneck as a good guy.

I've sat in pubs there where the bartender would openly make loud racist remarks. ie...one asked me "you didn't bring any monkeys over with you did you ?". The entire pub heard it and cracked up laughing.

No bartender here would ever dare do that shit. In the US racism is alive and well, but openly being racist can bring hell upon you. You can get fired, you can get your company sued out the ass, you can draw media attention. Highly racist people have to subtle and know when it's safe and not safe to openly be racist.

The vibe I got in many parts of Ireland and Scotland was, being openly racist = nothing can happen to you. Or if it could, they didn't seem to give a shit.

This is quite an eye-opener Spin. It makes me want to go beat the shit outta some racists. And living in the capital of Tennessee....it'd be pretty easy to do.

The weird thing about being a white straight male is you can totally know and coexist with racists and homophobes and the like and have no clue. I always find it weird when a acquaintance of mine reveals themselves to be racist after a long time knowing them.

I was once crazy about this gothy girl, went on a few dates and even slept with her , then one day we finally came around to a conversation that exposed her as a neo fucking nazi..... she had all her hair... no swastika tattoo's or anything like that, we never talked about race related things so I had no clue up to that point.

I was pretty sad, she was hotter than most of the girls I'd been with up to that point :(

That is so right. This country is different. It's racist past pretty much has it by the balls. It causes so many problems and confusion.

Also I should have been more specific about not encountering racism in europe. I didn't really encounter much towards black people HOWEVER Germans would openly talk with me about what they didn't like about white Americans as if I was gonna add to it.

This is quite an eye-opener Spin. It makes me want to go beat the shit outta some racists. And living in the capital of Tennessee....it'd be pretty easy to do.
The thing is that you can't do that. It's not like every white person is racist. Shit half the time white people are just as oblivious to the terminology as black people are so that's where that conflict comes from. You can never tell if it means something or not.

I can actually relate to that feeling. By my senior year in high school I was one of maybe 25-30 white kids left in a school of over 1,000 black students in a lower class section of town.

I was constantly verbally attacked by some of the students, even physically attacked, all due to being white. Some of the students seemed to view any white person as "the man" out to destroy them and reacted accordingly. To be honest, towards the end the school's white population started vanishing faster than ever due to white students fearing being attacked. One too many "you don't belong here cracker, leave or get your ass beat down" chased them off.

I never did leave and could have easily left with a belief of "fuck black people, most hate us anyways, so why bother being nice to people who hate your guts ?"

I didn't though because I didn't let the negatives over take the positives. Most my friends were black and they didn't buy into to that shit. Hell, they even took shit for having white friends. They got called sell out, especially the black girls I dated.

In the end, the negatives will always be in your memory, but you can't let them eat away at you. There's no shortage of good people here, but sometimes you gotta step around a lot of shit to find them.
