Just like 20 plus years ago Tron gets snubbed for the best Visual Effects nod. What's with all this Alice In Wonderland bullshit? It sucks they only got nominated for Sound Editing, I would have liked to have seen Daft Punk up for an award with their music.

Tron was far from visually impressive, it was just the color blue for 2 hours.

I stopped caring about the Oscars in my 20s when I realized that they barely paid attention to low budget indie flicks. And the wouldn't release vote/% counts for the categories. And now the voting can easily be rigged with 10 movies in the best picture category. And I don't care about seeing The Social Network.

The Black Swan was superb, a better horror movie than anything out of the actual genre in the past five years. The Fighter and Inception were both well done but with plot inconsistencies. I also think that remakes (True Grit or Chicago in the past) should be excluded from consideration unless they offer considerable change from prior interpretations. I love the Coen Brothers, but this was their first by the numbers movie remake and far less entertaining than the rest of their work. Still a great movie, but it's no No Country For Old Men or Fargo.

How nice list :)

But I'm little bit confused,

why does the Toy Story 3 become the nominee for Best Picture ?

don't the animation movie only can win the best animated picture ?

:down::downf::forw: :A: :)

Toy Story 3 shouldn't be considered for best picture simply because it was lame. And the whole series is pretty meh IMO. They should have just stopped after the first one. It's kinda the same story told three times but a little different each time. I hope How to Train Your Dragon wins the best animated film....Even though it will probably go to Toy Story 3.

Oh I see, thanks for clearing :)

yep nearly 100% the Statue will go to Toy Story 3, but I do personally prefer Illusionist will be the winner :), I think It's not fair that the sequel movie wins the title, not creative and nothing new special anymore ;)

The awards are tonight (though I rarely watch them), but since the 10 nominees are actually quite good this year (now that I've seen all but Winter's Bone), I'm curious to see who wins. 2010 was a pretty good year for quality movies.

Of course, the "big" awards are voted on by all Academy members vs. things like music, editing and cinematography (which are voted on by the members in those fields), and thus they turn into the massive campaigns by studios to those members (anyone who lives in LA knows when they're making their billboard/newspaper/etc pitches in the "for your consideration" vein.

Going into tonight, the predictors for Best Picture looks like either Social Network or The King's Speech, which were both great choices --can't really flaw either one.

However, director seems to be favoring David Fincher's work on The Social Network over The King's Speech --and while Best Picture and Best Director often go together, there have been plenty of notable exceptions (Spielberg getting it for Saving Private Ryan but Shakespeare in Love winning; or the infamous 2005 awards where Ang Lee won for Brokeback but Crash somehow won (this guy speaks for me)).

Personal favorites: I hope Colin Firth takes Best Actor, Annette Bening takes Best Actress (yes, over Portman), and Helena Bonham Carter takes Best Supporting Actress. Christian Bale is this year's safest bet and is absolutely going to win for The Fighter, and I couldn't agree more.

------------

[tl;dr] Don't know if I'm going to watch it, but I will recommend the 9 nominees for Best Picture that I did get around to seeing.

Is there any reason why Legend of the Guardians and Tangled weren't included in best animated feature film?

What a slap in the face to Dreamworks and Disney.
Apparently they needed at least one more major animated movie to come out in order to expand the number of nominees, so it fell a little short. I haven't gotten to see Tangled yet (and I'm rather excited about it), but I thought Legend of the Guardians was poorly executed.

There were enough movies last year to get five nominees, by the way. Up was certainly a nice movie, but I liked The Princess and the Frog and Fantastic Mr. Fox better. (The other two were The Secret of Kells and Coraline.)

Oh, and it's kinda sad that How to Train Your Dragon had to come out this year when the Pixar juggernaut was resurrecting such a beloved franchise. Toy Story 3 is an excellent flick, but I kinda wish that the fresh, light-hearted, and visually stunning HTTYD would win.

That was a really tough line up --I didn't see the Princess and the Frog but all the others were very strong.

Regardless of TS3's inevitably win, I was to see The Illusionist because I was such a huge fan of The Triplets of Belleville (which should've beat Finding Nemo). With that said, TS3 was exceptional.

Coraline is also a wonderful piece of animation, but I felt that it had some minor pacing issues. I just saw Secret of Kells and I think it's brilliant and beautiful. It really was an extremely strong line-up, but I'd have most liked to see Fantastic Mr. Fox win since it came totally out of left field.

Unfortunately, I have yet to see either The Illusionist or The Triplets of Belleville, but I'm looking forward to rectifying that since they have phenomenal style and intriguing premises.

IMO:
Best Movie - The King's Speech (didn't see The Kids are Alright or Toy Story 3)
Best Actor - Colin Firth
Best Actress - Natalie Portman
Best Supporting Actor - Christian Bale
Best Supporting Actress - Hailee Steinfeld (she shouldn't be in supporting role, but it's the only way she'll come out with an award).
Best Director - David Fincher

It's strange. As much as I love quality cinema, I couldn't care less about Oscar this year. I've long disregarder the Academy awards as having any value for me, and I don't use them as any barometer of stuff I might have interest in, but this year I am fine not even knowing who won what. I'm prettt sure I just don't care if I ever find out. In the past, I'd want to know for curiosity's sake. This year...almost complete apathy.
