Maybe I'm missing it... but I can't seem to find an official Civ5 thread here. We're two weeks out from the official release date of Sept. 21st. I'm getting psyched, playing some Civ 4 and Civ Rev in preparation. Time for the official countdown.

I'm a little afraid it is going to consume me for a while. I get sucked into Civ 4 pretty hardcore. One of the only games I can still get lost in and realize the sun is coming up and I have work to worry about in a few hours.

I swear someone mentioned 5 somewhere, but I can't remember and it doesn't matter.

I'm going to avoid this like the plague... only because it will rule. my. life. if I don't.

From Civ1, to Colonization (old and new) to, Alpha Centauri, to 2-4 (and all the expansion packs), this is a long, painful track record of experience talking :loco:

Goddamn it, this sounds awesome:

City warfare has been revamped. Cities have hitpoints that, if taken down to zero, will signal the city's defeat to invading forces. Hitpoints can be increased by merging units with the city. Captured cities can be annexed, razed, or transformed into puppet states, each option having distinct advantages; for example, puppet states will provide resources and have lower unhappiness.

Sounds like they've fixed what had long been the worst thing about the game.

The new addition of independent city states also holds a lot of potential.

Never got into the God Game genre.

I can see why some people (especially Bobak) can get into it though.

I've had my eyes on this for months. Looks amazing.

Being god is a lot of hard work and effort.

Black & White was still my favorite being god genre game.

Next to EQ, civ is the only game (series) that has ever had the described effect on me. I find it a little hard to believe Civ2 had me by the nuts, but it totally did. I skipped 3, but 4 blew my mind.

5 will probably run shittily on my comp though, which lessens the overall crack-like sensation of civ games. Good for me... I guess. I got shit to do.

edit: @Abasuto - Did you like Populous (the latest versions in particular)? I thought it had the best parts of Black & White and lacked the whole tomagotchi style pet raising thing which I found to be exhausting. Populous 3 had some gnarly multiplayer, mad plagues, deep strategy.

This is a bad month for video games for me.

Halo Reach is going to destroy all of my multiplayer gaming time.

Civilization V is going to eat away all my single player time.

I can't believe these two games are coming out within a week of each other.

I'll be there when Civ 5 drops. I've been looking forward to this for awhile.

I wish I had a laptop or PC that was good enough to run it. I want this game so bad! :crying:

My laptop is more than powerful enough to run it, but it doesn't have an optical drive ;) Like Civ4, I'll probably have to resort to cracks in order to play my retail copy. Well, I could play it on the desktop, but what fun is that? I'll probably stop by Best Buy tonight and get a copy. Probably. I don't really need this until the weekend, but... Probably. Then again, I definitely have stuff that has to get done this week at work. Damn responsibilities. Better not pick it up for a few days. Probably.

Civics, warfare, politics. You also start off with very primitive technology then control your scientific research and take your civilization from the stone age all the way through to space.

You can rule the map by force or non-militarily, the latter of which is way harder.

Usually way harder. On Civ 4, I wasn't able to beat the CPU above Monarch level without going for cultural victory, which I think was the easiest for that game. I don't see how someone would achieve a Conquest victory in 4 with the difficulty cranked up. There are so many penalties that it can take the whole game just to conquer 1 of the 6 opponents, unless you are doing something wacky like save/restore to win every fight. I try to only save when I'm quitting for the night.

I've picked up Civ 5 but no chance to try it yet.

Edit: Game is crashing after opening cinematic:

...and even if you don't have that issue, there are plenty of others on Steam forums. My impression is that this game is not ready for primetime, though it works for some. Civ 4 was a far more polished product on the day of release.

That sucks... Well good excuse to avoid it for a few weeks, then. You know a patch will come quick, but yeah, still sucks.

Does Civ 5 have Infinite City Sprawl? Civ 4 was the first in the series not to have it.

i've played through the demo twice (100 turns.)

ill probably be buying it today. might just get it on steam but i do have a $5 best buy coupon.

first civ game i've ever played. its great. i just hate how workers build roads. theyre never straight and usually take up more tiles than they need to.

if youre having technical issues make sure your drivers are up to date.

Played the game for two or three hours tonight, did not see any problems. I mean, I got walked all over by China, but I had no real clear build tree going anyway.

The Gamespot review really sold me on this game, but I still won't commit... My home PC would probably melt --it would take a while to go through some mid/late game Civ4:BTS turns.

That, and I always love the later packs, and Civ4 had two strong ones with Warlords and BTS (the latter even added an entirely new major concept: corporations).

Welcome to what I think is the most addicting game ever made.

Were you controlling the worker units or automating them? Railroads do go straight (although there were a few annoying graphical quirks in the way 4 would portray them).

I still like to micromanage each one, but that's because you had to in early Civ games.
