I love this thing. I use it so much for movies, but I do do a lot of gaming on it as well. It just YLOD'd

What are the benefits of getting the new slim PS3 over fixing this one myself/sending it to Sony?

UPDATE: Fixed my YLOD using the walkthrough found in this thread:

http://playstationlifestyle.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2376

Used Arctic Silver 5 paste and a heat gun. Total cost to repair - 40 bux.

There wasn't too much dust in there, but I cleaned every part with a duster and compressed air. I took off all the old paste and replaced it with a nice even layer of AS5.

Tested with The Dark Knight and the Drive works fine. Ran a game and it's fine as well.

Very glad I can keep my 60 gigger for a while longer. I know it won't last forever, but it's such a nice machine.

Total time invested in the reflow/cleaning was about 2 hours.

Worth it.

Here's a copy of the PDF I referenced as well: http://b3.s3.p.quickshareit.com/files/ylodfixbbef7.pdf

The orig 60 gigs were the best. Had full backwards compatibility, lots of card slots, 4 usb ports. If I were you i would just get yours fixed, especially if you play ps1/ps2 games as the new consoles don't play them. I know if mine ever craps out i'm just getting it fixed.

I went through 2 60 gigs....and I'll tell ya they are the most unreliable, and after the first time they go bad its all downhill from there. I loved the 60 for all the above mentioned features, but currently sit on a slim. MUCH more reliable, quiet, and far less energy consumption.

All PS3s play Psone games.

I don't really play a lot of PS2 games, but I will play them on occaision (KOF, God Hand, but really, it's not a focus).

Never used the card readers, never used SACD support...

What other benefit does the PS3 60Gb offer over the new slim??

You can always "reball" it with leaded compound ( i dont know how to explain this in english) and it will last forever ;) Sony doesnt use lead cause of the "green" environment act.

Also you can prevent the YLOD from happening by opening up the ps3, putting new thermal paste on the cpu and gpu and add some fans to it

The YLOD happens from excesive heat (machine gets dirty inside and therefore the console is not cooled down properly) and in the end the GPU and CPU gets unsoldered from the board

I thought the only PS3 capable of playing PS1 & 2 was the first model released(60gb) can the new slim also play PS1 then????

yes. All ps3s play PS1 games. Not all PS3s play PS2 games.

Less energy consumption and a better overall design IMO. The slim is also a lot quieter. If you don't really care about PS2 b/c I don't see any reason to have the old design over the slim.

Every model PS3 plays PS1 games. The 20gb and 60gb feature full bc with all PS2 games, while the 80gb with 4 USB ports plays limited PS2 titles via software emulation. The rest of the models however, are strictly PS3 and PS1 only.

Christ...how do people still not understand this.

Anywho...just ditch the 60gb because all of the large models are garbage imo. The slims have a very low failure rate and run great as many have stated above. The fat models have very few advantages now that Sony nerfed the other OS feature, and from what the OP posted above, it doesn't seem like you will miss any of them.

I came here to type the same thing. But here's a link if you like Google Doc-driven epiphanies:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10318727-1.html

Chances are that your 60GB is out of warranty. If you're feeling intrepid, and you might have an idea of what exactly is wrong with it, then this link might provide insight:

But yeah- should the day come, I'll have very little of a problem shifting over to a Slim, if only because I don't need a game console drawing power like a small refrigerator to only spin a Netflix disc.

the power use is minimal from a 60gb to a slim, unless you are some kind of green freak they should play little part in what you decide.
the money a new slim will cost you versus what the repair will cost would take a few years to make up in your power bill.
at the very least you can try the repair yourself.

If you've got an older PS3, you might be wondering how much this extra energy consumption is going to cost you over the course of a year. Unless you're playing a lot of video games, the difference isn't that much. If you generally play for about 20 hours a week, you'll save $13.74 per year using a PS3 Slim vs. an older model. If you're hardcore enough to rack up 50 hours of gaming per week, you'd still only save about $100 over a three-year period. In other words, the PS3 Slim may make you feel better, but it won't make much of a difference in your bank account.

Hmph. It's not that much of a difference.

I'll consider repairing on my own/sending to Sony then.

Can someone link me to a good guide to fix this?

I know I need a heat gun ( I can get that at Sears).

Where can I get thermal paste and which is the best?

What is the best video/guide to show me how to best reflow the machine??

Best two reasons to own a slim is that it's dead quiet when on and has a matte finish so it doesn't get scratched to hell and look like you bought it used from a crackhouse after a few months.

However, I also fall firmly in the "fix the old one and save $$$" camp.

It seems like many fat PS3 units are failing nowadays and I currently own 2 of them. I love these 60GB units but I guess YLOD is inevitable.

Rade, pls let us know how your PS3 performs after you have fixed it.

i fixed a few ps3's , i sort of went on my own since i work in electronics i was comfortable with it. i woulld recommend you tube. look for ylod fix. also the gpu/cpu reflow may not work it could be the psu. if you could get one cheap i would say do that first ( i borrowed a friends to verify the psu was not the problem). if the inside of your ps3 is clean i would tend to lean towars psu though.

when you get down to the main pcb i would put it in the oven for a bit to getthe whole board up to temp (electric only). i also use solder flux not only to help reflow but also help identify when the reflow is up to temp

to be honest the biggest pita is taking the ps3 apart. once you fixed ithe ylod you can fix the 360 rrod, its much easier based on the same concept.
